Wait, what? Stacking is already out?

Last night!

I know what I'm doing during my winter break now!
― Mordy, Wednesday, 9 February 2011 15:02 (fifteen years ago)
whoa wait is stacking a ps3 exclusive?
― O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 9 February 2011 18:26 (fifteen years ago)
*shakes fists at skies, rends garments*

― Mordy, Wednesday, 9 February 2011 18:42 (fifteen years ago)
dont panic, i was actually just asking
― O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 9 February 2011 18:48 (fifteen years ago)
the internet says its on both, i just didnt see it on xbox arcade or whatever when i checked
― O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 9 February 2011 18:49 (fifteen years ago)
*lowers hands, hems tshirt*
although to be honest this is kinda my last straw with them, i am sure it will look good and be funny, but i am wondering if they have rediscovered the ability to make games actually also fun and playable - brutal legend left a lot to answer for
― O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 9 February 2011 18:53 (fifteen years ago)
This game is very ugly-looking.
― polyphonic, Wednesday, 9 February 2011 19:05 (fifteen years ago)
costume quest was pretty fun + playable!
― Mordy, Wednesday, 9 February 2011 19:55 (fifteen years ago)
I thought it was gorgeous personally. But it hits a sweet spot.xp Jjjusten: you didn't like costume quest?
― الله basedأكبر (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 9 February 2011 19:56 (fifteen years ago)
I thought it was gorgeous personally. But it hits a sweet spot.
Stacking?
I think my main problem is how they do lighting, honestly. Everything is lit so poorly.
Costume Quest being the notable exception.
― polyphonic, Wednesday, 9 February 2011 20:04 (fifteen years ago)
i never played costume quest because i heard it was about 20 minutes long
― O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 9 February 2011 20:07 (fifteen years ago)
yeah, i thought stacking was gorgeous. i only played for like ten minutes last night but i love the bizarre dynamic and the silent movie feel. You start out in a dingy train station so of course it's gonna be dim; presuming it'll open up.
― الله basedأكبر (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 9 February 2011 20:14 (fifteen years ago)
It's plenty long for an arcade title.
― polyphonic, Wednesday, 9 February 2011 20:16 (fifteen years ago)
more like six, seven hours
― الله basedأكبر (forksclovetofu), Wednesday, 9 February 2011 21:53 (fifteen years ago)
Found the Stacking demo pretty boring, though delightfully weird.
― polyphonic, Thursday, 10 February 2011 19:20 (fifteen years ago)
ha yeah i played the demo, and thought it was cute but might get really old - but hey, burps and farts for the kids!
also it was like endless cutscene central, and as charming as the cutscenes were, i was def doing more watching than playing.
― O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 10 February 2011 19:33 (fifteen years ago)
DoubleFine is the most overrated developer working today imo, but I always end up with their stuff anyway since my share group <3s them
― "earth of the butt" (jamescobo), Thursday, 10 February 2011 19:46 (fifteen years ago)
in b4 sb
Decided to go back and finally finish Costume Quest before playing Stacking, discovered that the update introduced a bug meaning that anyone who had a save file before the third world at the time can no longer finish the game. YAY. Particularly annoying as even though it's short the barebones combat would make playing it over again really tiresome.
― if, Sunday, 13 February 2011 18:56 (fifteen years ago)
They talked about that in the podcast. Apparently, it's a question of money, and the rigamarole of testing/publishing/promoting of a patch which only took 5 mins to re-code.
― Crazed Mister Handy (kingfish), Sunday, 13 February 2011 20:00 (fifteen years ago)
how have game developers still not learnt that long unskippable cut scenes in the beginning of their games are poison?
― Mordy, Monday, 14 February 2011 17:32 (fifteen years ago)
and the control is TERRIBLE
― Mordy, Monday, 14 February 2011 17:33 (fifteen years ago)
to their credit tho, it has some really compelling stuff in it

― Mordy, Monday, 14 February 2011 18:10 (fifteen years ago)
i have to admit that after the initial rush i wasn't able to get into Stacking, though the online reviews suggest it opens up at level 2
― الله basedأكبر (forksclovetofu), Monday, 14 February 2011 18:15 (fifteen years ago)
stacking demo gave me motion sickness.

i had to quit the demo of stacking halfway through and everytime i think about going back to it i think ah fuck do i really want to see the dad coal mining intro again and the answer is always no
― O_o-O_0-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 24 February 2011 18:17 (fifteen years ago)
the cut scenes are skippable, just jam on all the buttons
― a nan, a bal, an anal ― (abanana), Thursday, 24 February 2011 18:34 (fifteen years ago)
just hit the french fry costume bug in costume quest. and so now... the game is broken?
don't think i'll be buying any further doublefine games, tbh. this is bullshit.

What bug is that? I was quite enjoying costume quest (though I wish there was more to the combat; it's _this_ close to my beloved Super Mario RPG, only less so) and now you've got me nervous.
Any thoughts on the newly announced "manly, manly, manly" game Trenched? WW2 build-your-own mech/Trench Defense weirdness? The trailer makes it look quite enticing, but it's xbox exclusive, which sucks.

If you have a save game you started before doing the update and haven't got to the third world yet, you will get stuck almost as soon as you get to it.
― if, Monday, 7 March 2011 21:18 (fifteen years ago)
I wonder if that could be avoided by deleting the update and not logging on to xblive? Sucks to have to use a workaround but it's better than losing your progress.
― reggaeton for the painfully alone (polyphonic), Monday, 7 March 2011 21:20 (fifteen years ago)
yeah, that's what i read on some website somewhere. maybe i'll give it a go later, but right now, i can't be arsed, and i can't believe they aren't going to fix the bug they just introduced into the game.

STACKING
― 40% chill and 100% negative (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 7 April 2011 00:14 (fifteen years ago)
so great, what a bunch of crybabies on this thread
agreed on the opening cutscene though, it is just astounding that designers capable of crafting such a beautiful game with hints placed at exactly the right points can't see how preferable it would be to have a 5-second cut scene and then plonk you into the action

After the success of Costume Quest, Doublefine aims for the toddler market:

Cracked open Brutal Legend this weekend. Man, it's sad, because you can see them trying so hard with the game, trying to fit together these different gameplay ideas - really wonderfully going all the way with the metal theme - but it takes all the bad bits of Psychonauts and does an even worse job. I'm basically forcing myself through the game to get to the dialogue and cutscenes, which are really funny, but man, I feel like I'm back in the mid-'90s. I mean, who makes an open world game without a compass or onscreen map? Why did this need to be open world at all? Or RTS??
― Nhex, Wednesday, 8 February 2012 01:10 (fourteen years ago)
brutal legend sucked unfortunately.stacked was not fun.I missed trenchedbut goddamn i will buy psychonauts 2 DAY ONE if that comes out. top ten game for me.
