putting all this resource management crap into driving games is a huge pain in the ass. ok, fine, if you want to lock some cars until i've progressed a certain amount, go ahead. don't make me have to earn money and visit dealerships and all that wahoosie when all i want to do is DRIVE.

e.g. delete via naivete (ledge), Thursday, 9 December 2010 14:01 (fifteen years ago)

ledge - if you just want to drive you can always back out to the main menu and just do arcade races (nice selection of cars you can use in there too). no credits or $ for those races though :(

when you say "assists" what do you mean? would that include automatic shifting?

For me, yeah, I've usually got everything off in driving options, no driving line, no traction control, no ASM or ABS, manual trans and this gives you a lot more control and a better overall feeling (but I play with a wheel, so that makes it easier). I've also gotten used to it in other sims like iRacing (that have no assists), so to play with 'em really messes with my head. It's sort of a drag that when you switch cars or events it keeps turning some of those assists back on so you have to remember to keep going back to the driving options before a race and turn 'em off. I've had a few races where I forget the assists got reset and left the default on TC:5 ABS:1 and it felt like driving on rails to me - can't imagine how pointless it would feel with the even higher level of assists available.

At the least, even if you're using a joypad controller, you should learn to use manual transmission as that will give you a lot more control and speed through corners & you will feel a lot more engaged in the driving.

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 9 December 2010 15:41 (fifteen years ago)

hmmm... will consider. i didn't even know those options existed tbh (apart from manual trans of course).

for a beefy challenge it can be pretty fun to buy an overpowered FR car and do NO mods to it at all.. can be pretty tough to win without sliding all over the track.

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 9 December 2010 15:47 (fifteen years ago)

I don't want to lecture from the mountain tops, but if you're only going to turn off one assist, PLEASE turn off the racing line... you will find the driving much more fun the less crutches you use, but that one is the worst & totally ruins immersion in racing games, imo. Even with all the assists off, the fact that you can't turn off the HUD is also still a HUGE assist as you don't have to really learn the tracks or even braking points as there is no way to stop the game from telling you when to brake or downshift with a giant red flashing number. Also always having the map on screen should more than make up for no driving line even if you don't take any time to learn the track.

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 9 December 2010 16:51 (fifteen years ago)

oh yeah i definitely turned off the racing line!! in fact i thought it was a bug that it was there, in real races.

i actually find the map fucks with my concentration and memorization - i need to know the bends as they actually appear, not as i anticipate them appearing due to the map

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 9 December 2010 17:10 (fifteen years ago)

like, i'll be looking at the map, going, ah OK now i'll get ready for this turn and boom it's already upon me and i'm fucked

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 9 December 2010 17:11 (fifteen years ago)

it's like going around an unfamiliar city with a friend who knows it really well, and then thinking you do too - then once you actually try to get around on your own you're lost

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 9 December 2010 17:12 (fifteen years ago)

I know some will find this lame, but I love 'Grid' - I played GT3 on PS2 years back - will I like this?

BlackIronPrison, Thursday, 9 December 2010 17:15 (fifteen years ago)

Did you enjoy playing GT3? GT5 is basically the same with sharper/more detailed graphics and some online features.

the oddness of GT is a large part of its charm. completely bonkers menu design, the downtempo smooth jazz aesthetic, the baroque installation mechanics--at this point, like 12 years or whatever after the first GT, this shit is soothing.

adam, Friday, 10 December 2010 18:09 (fifteen years ago)

it's a nice respite from call of duty nu metal tapout extremity.

adam, Friday, 10 December 2010 18:10 (fifteen years ago)

adam I wanted to say the same thing as you but you put it much better than I would have.

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Friday, 10 December 2010 22:47 (fifteen years ago)

haha lipstick meet pig

goole, Friday, 10 December 2010 22:48 (fifteen years ago)

it's the opposite really - a thoroughbred of a game with the immediate air of a gimpy nag

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 11 December 2010 21:17 (fifteen years ago)

last night i spent two hours trying to get a VW van around the Top Gear test track - fuck me i never thought a 70mph race would be so hard

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 11 December 2010 21:19 (fifteen years ago)

i got bronze in that and am taking a break. shit is nuts.

the intermediate top gear challenge, with the lotus that floats around the track like a hot wheel, is a motherfucker as well. haven't even hit bronze in that one.

adam, Saturday, 11 December 2010 23:17 (fifteen years ago)

The samba bus top gear thing was driving me crazy too - so many tries and so many disqualifieds. I've got 2nd place twice though (still want that gold, but it's maybe too infuriating to bother with).

Jeff LeVine, Sunday, 12 December 2010 03:58 (fifteen years ago)

Samba bus race is ruining my life. I was out front once, but messed up the LAST corner and was *DISQUALIFIED*... so annoying, yet so great.

Spencer Chow, Tuesday, 14 December 2010 20:12 (fifteen years ago)

So, basically what you're all saying is that I should purchase this immediately.

two weeks pass...

yes.

music is hideous

F-Unit (Ste), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 13:01 (fifteen years ago)

Question for you chaps and chappettes: I'm going to pick up either this or F1 this week because I've been hankering for a racing/driving game. Any thoughts as to which one I should get? (I'll ask the same in the F1 thread and see if that gets a different response).

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 13:03 (fifteen years ago)

i've never played F1 but GT5 is an incredible bargain when you consider it's many, many racing games in one - NASCAR, karts, rally, etc - and within those genres are so many different sorts of challenges

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 13:15 (fifteen years ago)

Thanks Tracer!

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 13:30 (fifteen years ago)

played it at a friends house over xmas, to be honest it was a lot better than i expected. tho wasn't impressed visually, there's a lot in there to keep the racer occupied. Never quite got around to seeing the rain courses, but on youtube they look pretty spectacular.

I think I'll get this, but might need a wheel to appreciate it.

question about the nascar, rally, and karting etc. i only really saw a rather crappy couple of races in each. Do they expand to proper races/leagues/cups ?

F-Unit (Ste), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 14:31 (fifteen years ago)

No.

Jeff LeVine, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 15:38 (fifteen years ago)

On the F1 thread Jeff you said:

With Gran Turismo I feel like it's much harder to have a good race - it's more of a driving and car collecting grindathon game (because your car is either too weak or too powerful in 90% of the racing you do - there rarely is that balanced, tight racing - maybe except if you set it up just right in online)

In my limited time playing GT5 this is sadly true. I wish there were like, a walkthrough or something, designed not for maximising points or speeding through the game but for having competitors at the appropriate level for your stage in the game and car quality..

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 16:12 (fifteen years ago)

Like, I've watched the reply maybe twice? What's the point of watching yourself win by a lap?

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 16:13 (fifteen years ago)

replAy

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 16:13 (fifteen years ago)

thing with gt5 was that is seems really easy to just tune up your car if its not winning races. i remember older gt's being much harder about this, and in the end you were racing the same tracks over and over again just to get some money to tune up.

i guess what i'm saying is that it's both a good and bad thing.

meh.

F-Unit (Ste), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 16:40 (fifteen years ago)

'was that it seems' oh deary deary me

F-Unit (Ste), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 16:41 (fifteen years ago)

racing games have a hard enough time equalizing things even among the AI pack, let alone between you and them. there was always only 1 car you had to worry about, really.

goole, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 16:58 (fifteen years ago)

I haven't been playing this as much due to other distractions, but I am at a point where I would almost be tempted to enter a full unlock cheat code just to do a cool arcade mode race once in a while.

get off my lawn (rockapads), Tuesday, 4 January 2011 17:01 (fifteen years ago)

Also, I really want a wheel peripheral. If I could afford to plunk down $100 for one I think it would breathe new life into this game.

Does such a cheat even exist? This would probably seal the deal for me buying the game.

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 4 January 2011 17:39 (fifteen years ago)

nope. doesn't appear to be one :(

get off my lawn (rockapads), Wednesday, 5 January 2011 03:35 (fifteen years ago)

You guys are joking, right?

Choose "Arcade" option on first screen that comes up

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 16 January 2011 23:29 (fifteen years ago)

Race on any track, rain or shine, night or day

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Sunday, 16 January 2011 23:29 (fifteen years ago)

like, if you think you're good at the Nurburgring try it at night in the rain

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Monday, 17 January 2011 13:53 (fifteen years ago)

i'm having an absolute blast with the seasonal events, special events and license tests - all of them test your finesse to the utmost. i am sooooo far from getting golds at nurburgring it's not even funny

it's just so strange that the A-spec meat of the game is so utterly unbalanced in comparison

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 19 January 2011 23:44 (fifteen years ago)

OK i discovered the secret to A-spec being balanced and fun:

- DON'T SPEND ANY MONEY if you can help it

your natural inclination is to tune the shit out of these cars... so you can win... duhhh. but no. if you do that, then 1) the races are no fun, because you blow away the competition and 2) you will be hurting for cash

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 27 January 2011 11:40 (fifteen years ago)

anyway i've gotten back into this and i am having a blast.. finally went back to the VW bus challenge at the Top Gear track and i have to say that is maybe the most challenging and exciting races i've ever played on a console..

(despite the fact that in order to win you basically have to drive like a complete asshole)

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 27 January 2011 11:41 (fifteen years ago)

can i just say again how much i love this game??

like, <3 <3

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 27 January 2011 16:10 (fifteen years ago)

when i can afford it, i'm getting it

F-Unit (Ste), Thursday, 27 January 2011 19:43 (fifteen years ago)

well i beat the VW challenge but the Lotus Elise challange on the same track is just GOD DAMN

FUCK

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 8 February 2011 15:39 (fifteen years ago)

by the way i got gold on all B license tests - which was SOOOPAH fun

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 8 February 2011 15:41 (fifteen years ago)

nice, i'll bet that took some doing.

on gt1 when i'd done all the gold licences, i remember actually jumping up and down on my bed like a gay child.
