5s and 6s are the worst imo

I like 5s

there is basically never a time when a 6 can't, at the least, be made to disappear. fives can definitely fuck you, though, for sure. the worst is dropping a five and then realizing, with many moves to spare (maybe even a level-up to come), that it will almost certainly never be made to disappear. like you can beaver away at some other part of the board but yr fate is sealed.

i maintain 4s are the most pernish
― cathy: ACK-er (s1ocki), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 11:51 (thirteen years ago) link
i find dangerous 5s just crop up less often
best has gotta be 7. who was ever sad to see a 7?
― ledge, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 11:53 (thirteen years ago) link
also sorta depends on whether we're talking about numbers that pop up in circles, or ones we are charged with dropping
― cathy: ACK-er (s1ocki), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 11:53 (thirteen years ago) link
cuz 7s that pop out of circles can be drags

they can be a fine tool, especially in the earlyd ays of a game
letting a 3 creep up too far along the side can fuck your shit up pronto
but yeah there is really only one answer here
― progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 11:59 (thirteen years ago) link
i'd like a discussion to develop about "the opening" in hardcore, i.e. before the first row of gray discs has appeared. i've started taking a lot more time with this, with the idea that a perfect opening can set up a perfect game. however, like most drop7 "rules" i fear this is fantasy
― progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:00 (thirteen years ago) link
ya the opening is definitely a thing. i find i try to delay blowing up any numbers until at least the first row. im also obsessed with getting rid of 6s at that stage.
― cathy: ACK-er (s1ocki), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:00 (thirteen years ago) link
yeah I try not to get rid of anything until the first row appears for maximum grey disc poppage
― Sent via BlackBerry from T-Mobile (dayo), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:03 (thirteen years ago) link
let's be clear I meant to say breakage
secret 2: build chains. easiest at the beginning, i try to get a column of 7s on one side, bunch of 6s across the bottom with a gap, then fill in the gap when the first grey disks appear. if you're lucky you can get >20,000 in one go, clear that row of disks, rinse and repeat.
this is my ruy lopez. if i start a game and i can't set this up, i quit and go again.
― ledge, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:03 (thirteen years ago) link
(although i will settle for just one 6, and a 2 will do in the side column, 3 at a push.)
― ledge, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:05 (thirteen years ago) link
i get really irritated when the opening gives me low numbers sitting above high numbers - i just know they're going to explode uselessly once they get moved up

oh totes
― cathy: ACK-er (s1ocki), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:10 (thirteen years ago) link
one of the most annoying things is a 2 that appears on level 3
one of the most satisfying thing is drilling underneath it and revealing a 3 for a mini-chian
6s can really fuck up the 'building horizontally' thing. 6 at both sides... grr.
― ledge, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:12 (thirteen years ago) link
ya
croosh to clear at least one column on the far left or right in order to deal with 6s
― cathy: ACK-er (s1ocki), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:13 (thirteen years ago) link
xposts yeah - i am ALL ABOUT when a 5, say, is sitting in vertical position 4, above three complete gray discs. and i get a 4. drop that 4 on it, 5 does half the work, 4 does the other half.
― progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:14 (thirteen years ago) link
ya dropping a lower number onto a number one higher is mad satisfying
another one of life's little pleasures: 1s that appear on the bottom row and instantly wink out of existence
― cathy: ACK-er (s1ocki), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:16 (thirteen years ago) link
you get five drops per level-up, right. each level = 14 breakages to clear. so you need on average nearly three breakages per drop to stay alive!
― ledge, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:18 (thirteen years ago) link
that's fucked - only 7s can give you 3 breakages at once! but then you add chains into the mix and you start to have a chance i guess
― progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:20 (thirteen years ago) link
satisfying gambit:
a 5 sits on two discs. you drop a 3. you drop a 1. profit!
obv this can be expressed in many permutations, it's just so satisfying to complete a stack with a free-standing 1 that disappears and lets you chaaiiiiiiiiiinnnnn
― the only truffuluther on ilx (gbx), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:20 (thirteen years ago) link
wait waht, any number can break three discs at once?
you guys know about the 70,000 point bonus, yeah? it's if you completely clear the board. i've only gotten it twice (and wasn't fast enough to screen shot it). here it is http://gilesbowkett.blogspot.com/2010/06/how-to-win-at-drop7.html

― cathy: ACK-er (s1ocki), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:26 (thirteen years ago) link
I've been trying to use the new row of discs to my advantage but it's hard (i.e. having a bunch of 4's at level 3 during a level-up) because you need to initiate a chain beforehand in order to get maximum points
― Sent via BlackBerry from T-Mobile (dayo), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 12:27 (thirteen years ago) link
think I cleared the borad once in my early early days of playing (and may have been on normal, not hardcore)
― progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, October 6, 2010 8:26 AM (42 seconds ago) Bookmark
ya although i find it a more sophisticated pleasure when it's like a 2 or 3 or 4, because they only work in that one specific row, whereas a 7 can deliver that anywhere

― johnny crunch, Saturday, 2 March 2013 23:30 (eleven years ago) link
Normal or hardcore?
I'm not sure why normal is supposedly the easiest one. It's more challenging to me because you've got the numbers AND the unknown gray ones to break open.
877 is sick for either. nice job.
― pplains, Saturday, 2 March 2013 23:46 (eleven years ago) link
hardcore
normal just takes too long. i do play it occasionally & strategy is def a bit tweaky and i guess 'harder' but its just not a better game in that mode, i could pen a dissertation on this i think

highest hardcore is 856k. but i told a friend about this game and very quickly she bested me and broke the 1 million mark. tbh i kinda wonder about this game. are the numbers in gray blocks completely random? or is it possible to score insanely hgh on every game you play if you make all the right dcisions?
― Jibe, Sunday, 3 March 2013 07:17 (eleven years ago) link
It's taken me awhile to think of it as a chess game, thinking ahead a few extra moves before making the present one.
Primarily because you don't know what pieces you're going to have in those upcoming moves.

No ads or anything, but it opening up Facebook without warning surprised me.
Sometimes I get to where there's a row of 1's at the top and no way to topple them, my second-to-last ball comes up as a 2, and I'm like the Greek from "The Wire", waiting under the bridge for someone, putting away the phone and saying, "It isn't going to work out."
― pplains, Monday, 11 April 2016 15:00 (eight years ago) link
I'll also make a dumb mistake, like throwing a 1 away on a tall stack instead of busting a block on the far left, and I hear Norman Chad and Lon McEachern in my head going, "Oh, that was a bad play. He's walking right into it."
― pplains, Monday, 11 April 2016 15:01 (eight years ago) link
Downloaded it on my shitty Android phone and saw the new version for the first time. It even had the dumb "rack 'em!" sound effects at the beginning. What a way to spoil a classic game.
― pplains, Monday, 11 April 2016 15:04 (eight years ago) link
been meaning to read up on the strategy of this game. i play compulsively on the train but keep an average around 100k, sometimes i can get up to around 300k if i clear the board early.
normally i just try and nuke all 1s and 2s while keeping as many 5s, 6s, and 7s on the board, but i assume this is not actually the way to maximize ones score
― J0rdan S., Monday, 11 April 2016 15:28 (eight years ago) link
My first strategy is go a row of sixes and then pile some 7s at the end, so you'll get all those sixes to explode on the third or fourth step of a chain.
My strategy after that is to panic and start busting up anything I can find.
― pplains, Monday, 11 April 2016 15:33 (eight years ago) link
I feel like the success or dareisay genius of this game is that it resists any? most? like absolute strategies imo
like I guess I have a loose strat of trying to eliminate any 6s asap but there are def exceptions to that so ¯\(°_0)/¯
― johnny crunch, Monday, 11 April 2016 17:47 (eight years ago) link
SO much gambling... "If I get a 2 and bust that one, and it's a 1, then I can move that 4 down..." = basically risking it all on filling an inside straight.
