you guys i had this horrible thought

what if the numbers inside the grey discs in drop7 are not predetermined? what if the game decides what they'll be at the moment they explode?

FUCK

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 11:26 (fifteen years ago)

This has worried me before. Sometimes when you form a long term plan that may end in disaster if the right numbers don't appear, the game seems to reward your gambit by giving you what you desire. Other times it seems to royally fuck you up with an unbreakable wall of 1s and 2s. Chances are it's just the old 'ipod shuffle isn't really random' phenom, the brain imposing patterns where there are none.

ledge, Tuesday, 5 October 2010 11:31 (fifteen years ago)

what if they're watching us

cathy: ACK-er (s1ocki), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 11:46 (fifteen years ago)

I equal parts love and loathe Drop 7, particularly for all those times when a gray disc needed to be anything but a 5 for ex, only to reveal itself a 5. Also, walls of 1s appearing are always horrible. But it is so addictive, that even though I get mad after having only 1s appear, I can't help but start a new game. Still can't get huge scores, my top one being around 550k.

Jibe, Tuesday, 5 October 2010 12:58 (fifteen years ago)

Btw, looking at this thread, the games really recommanded were that, orbital, peggle. have and enjoy them all, but what are some other great games?

Jibe, Tuesday, 5 October 2010 12:59 (fifteen years ago)

Drop7

cathy: ACK-er (s1ocki), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 14:54 (fifteen years ago)

IMO the randomness is what makes it addicting. Like a slot machine

cathy: ACK-er (s1ocki), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 14:55 (fifteen years ago)

exactly! it's that rush of the fates suddenly smiling on you as you beat back the enemy against all odds.

i have never broken 500k in hardcore, though i have come very close. i agree that in the end, that final bit that will push you over the top all comes down to luck. because i am like a viper with that shit now. there is no error.

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 14:56 (fifteen years ago)

I agree its not all luck, else I wouldn't keep getting approx the same score all the time (around 250k). But to get the really big scores, luck does play a part, like by not giving you all ones on the top row.

Jibe, Tuesday, 5 October 2010 15:07 (fifteen years ago)

And agree with you tracer that what makes the game so addictive is for those moments when fate smiles on you and every gray disk turns out to be exactly what you need.

Jibe, Tuesday, 5 October 2010 15:08 (fifteen years ago)

still only averaging 185k :( what are your secrets?

Sent via BlackBerry from T-Mobile (dayo), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 15:19 (fifteen years ago)

secret 1: quit before game over if you're gonna get less than your current average score

ledge, Tuesday, 5 October 2010 15:20 (fifteen years ago)

secret 2: build chains. easiest at the beginning, i try to get a column of 7s on one side, bunch of 6s across the bottom with a gap, then fill in the gap when the first grey disks appear. if you're lucky you can get >20,000 in one go, clear that row of disks, rinse and repeat.

ledge, Tuesday, 5 October 2010 15:23 (fifteen years ago)

secret 3: work horizontally. don't carve out canyons.

ledge, Tuesday, 5 October 2010 15:24 (fifteen years ago)

ah you're talking about normal mode. i remember those days.

- you can pit 1s and 2s against each other
- sometimes you have to gamble
- always, always whittle down the high areas

i still can't use 1s properly, i.e. i usually "waste" them when given them to use

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 15:30 (fifteen years ago)

while secret 3 is really the way forward to a good score, there is nothing more satisfying than dropping a 7 in a canyon only to see a great chain reaction take place.

Jibe, Tuesday, 5 October 2010 15:30 (fifteen years ago)

i was talking about HARDCORE

secret 1: quit before game over if you're gonna get less than your current average score

weirdly glad that i am not the only person who does this!

no szigeti (c sharp major), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 15:57 (fifteen years ago)

ah ledge i misunderstood

still irritated by how many discs i "waste"

i'm sure i'd be better at this if i could visualize more than like one step ahead

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 16:03 (fifteen years ago)

Time to start a separate drop 7 thread????

I'm playing peggle again, the peggle nights add-on.

xp it's fair game i reckon. when the randomness fucks with you, fuck it.

ledge, Tuesday, 5 October 2010 22:14 (fifteen years ago)

embrace the mystery imho

cathy: ACK-er (s1ocki), Tuesday, 5 October 2010 22:14 (fifteen years ago)

btw dudes my d7 high score is 584,215 (avg 199,340)

also totally agree with this: "Sometimes when you form a long term plan that may end in disaster if the right numbers don't appear, the game seems to reward your gambit by giving you what you desire."

- a pair of twos arranged horizontally makes an excellent "blasting cap"
- if the game is giving you low-count garbage, remember that 3-1-2 or 2-1-3 is a quick way to get rid of all three in a chain
- avoid canyons
- never "complete" a sequence (ie - finish a 4stack) unless it will crack/open a grey disc. at least if you can help it.
- savvy play with low-counts when the the game stack is really tall is the absolute key to staying alive---know how to get rid of 2s 3s and 4s in chains and w/o the inevitable impenetrable wall of unbreakable 1-1-1 or w/e

My high score is 418,990 but good god did I have to witness a lot of this bullshit to get there:

I promised myself I would stop playing once I break 500k.

ANY OTHER IPHONE GAMES?

Jeff, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 11:14 (fifteen years ago)

there are no other games

all is drop7

take it here, guys

thread of drop 7, also a poll

Sent via BlackBerry from T-Mobile (dayo), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 11:46 (fifteen years ago)

I am enjoying Peggle Nights.

Regular Stormy (Jenny), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 13:12 (fifteen years ago)

Ha Jeff, I asked the same question yesterday. Orbital, drop7 and Peggle are all ilx plays apparently. Have just gotten flight control, it is fun too. Too early to say if it is a most excellent game or just one that'll occupy me for more than a week but so far it's looking good.

Jibe, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 13:32 (fifteen years ago)

I've certainly played other things than drop7 but nothing so addictive...
Carcassonne is great, Connext is good, Civ Rev is surprisingly good, Virtual Pool is the best pool game ever, Home Run Battle is good quick fun, Spider - where you play a spider creating webs and eating insects is cool and the Monkey Island games are surprisingly great give the limited screen real estate.
I was disappointed by Eliss, got bored of Peggle, found The Settlers lacking compared to the Amiga original and was rather confused by Space Invaders: Infinity Gene.

treefell, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 13:40 (fifteen years ago)

geoDefense is a fantastic tower defence game, played it 'til my fingers bled.

ledge, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 14:01 (fifteen years ago)

been playing beaucoup Strategery, first time in my life that Risk-like gameplay has been satisfying (if things go badly it's over fast, you don't have to clean up afterward, classique)

Euler, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 14:13 (fifteen years ago)

Super Mega Worm is glorious.

stet, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 17:09 (fifteen years ago)

quick scan of my games folders for what I've been playing lately:

Solomon's Keep (basically a twin-stick Diablo)
Sword of Fargoal (best roguelike on the platform)
Wesnoth (kind of a clunky interface but the game is stupidly deep)
Super Quick Hook
Backbreaker Football
9 Innings 2011 (naturally)
Word Ace & Blackjack Ace
Scoops (especially since it's free)
Pocket Frogs (ditto)
PathPix (ever played Pic Pic for the DS? this is Drawing)
Textropolis (word search game)
Texting of the Bread

also every night before I go to sleep I ask God to let the folks who made the iPhone Carcassonne get the rights to Catan, because the current iOS version sucks the beef dart

Ride decided to give birth to a giant poop log & disguise it as a CD (jamescobo), Wednesday, 6 October 2010 17:09 (fifteen years ago)

I played the iOS Catan a bunch when it came out & then lost attention, I think b/c the games take too long b/c of dumb interface choices. I don't want "snazzy" graphics effects for this game, I just want to get to my turn as quickly as possible.

gotta pick up Carcassonne soon.

Euler, Wednesday, 6 October 2010 17:15 (fifteen years ago)

picked up carcassonne, don't get it, too lazy to go through tutorial
