i know i know but i like to know what's going on, don't want to miss anything vital for the story - maybe after marston and some guy wittering on aimlessly for 5 minutes some vital plot turn will happen! it's my problem really, i should be more free & easy with the skip button but wish to hell the script-editor had been more brutal and kept things tighter. as meh as mafia2 was to play, the cutscenes were always watchable and never felt like a chore.

i've gone back to it, i'm mostly done with mexico now. funny shit that happened yesterday:

-trying to return a stolen wagon, i crashed and apparently suffered some kind of spinal injury. wasn't dead, but could only lie on the ground motionless and move the camera. a coyote came and nibbled but then wandered away, i was just hoping something will kill so i didn't have to restart but no luck.

-ended up on a cliff above the town i wanted to get to, not sure how to get down with my horse. so i just dismounted and slid down, tried to call my horse but it didn't seem to be working. then i was running from coyotes across the field, saw a dot moving towards me on the map, spun around and shot my horse point blank. :(

The new expansion is great. Much better than the last one, although I don't regret buying that one either.

Kind of irrelevant if you don't play the multiplayer, of course. But Liar's Dice, horse racing, the Stronghold mode... pretty sweet.

done (at 70%, which i am totally cool with). the last act (everything after you go back home basically) was so much better than i was expecting!

what's the "liars and smooth dudes" pack or whatever all about? is it a giant poker tournament??

starting to get the itch to play this again finally

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Monday, 27 September 2010 14:26 (thirteen years ago) link

You can play poker, but it isn't a tournament. It's just games of poker against other dudes. Same for Liar's Dice.

Horse races + guns is pretty fun.

"Stronghold" missions are multiplayer gang matches where you take turns on offense and defense in controlling terrority.

There are new gang hideouts and new "hunting grounds" (where cougars or etc. come in waves at you).

There is a new weapon: an explosive rifle that does a lot of damage.

Also some new player skins.

funky house skeptic (polyphonic), Monday, 27 September 2010 16:15 (thirteen years ago) link

"terrority" would be "territory" if my coffee was working.

anyone try zombies? i'm still finishing up bioshock (which, when i started playing it, seemed really hard because i was still reaching for my auto-aim + dead eye).

im kind of bored by this game. what do i do? all i've done is murder innocent people half the time. how do i get honor besides not killing some mexicans?

fulfill "stranger missions" iirc

of course i haven't really sat down and taken some time with the game...i keep getting pulled back to my madden season.

undead nightmare is pretty dope so far. although zombies means there is a lot of close-quarters/melee fighting, which didn't come up at all in the regular game, and that can be awkward. so far i've found myself running away all the time, just to get far enough away from the zombies to shoot without getting swarmed (which is pretty "realistic" i guess?).

can they climb?

congratulations (n/a), Thursday, 28 October 2010 14:59 (thirteen years ago) link

don't think so. i'm not sure if you can get on the rooftops where most of the survivors are, but i did find a tower to climb in mcfarlane's ranch, and then it was easy.

Sauvignon Blanc Mange (B.L.A.M.), Sunday, 31 October 2010 17:12 (thirteen years ago) link

might get it. I'm not usually a fan of horror-type games, don't like things jumping out at me from the dark, but I love RDR and would like to play it more

congratulations (n/a), Sunday, 31 October 2010 17:54 (thirteen years ago) link

The melee fighting is pretty intense - you have to stick and move before they swarm you. the first few towns to clear, they are not that many in number, and its pretty easy to just torch them. Later on, however, you have to be quick and smart with the use of Dead Eye.

I've found that I spend a lot of time running this way and that in order to separate the hordes. You can very easily take out 2 of the normal zombos, but once you get to three or more, you can take some hits that slow you down, which is exactly what you don't want in this game. Upside, they don't attack while you're searching their corpses, so you can pretty easily stock back up with ammo that way.

My least favorite zombos are the fucking zombo coyotes. Small heads = small head for head shot. Best to just out run them on the horse.

As far as climbing goes, they can do stairs, but they can't do ladders or ledges. So, you can find them on the second floors of houses, but roofs or second stories of barns or towers are usually pretty safe.

Overall, as I posted immediately above, VERY worth the $10. Genuinely creepy atmosphere, especially out from the towns. The northern area, Tall Trees, is out and out scary at some points when the zombos start gathering.

I am two for two on ursaline zombos.

The online play for undead nightmare is great. You and three other people vs. endless waves of zombies until you die.

macaroni rascal (polyphonic), Sunday, 31 October 2010 18:08 (thirteen years ago) link

I have not tried this yet. Cannot wait.

Sauvignon Blanc Mange (B.L.A.M.), Sunday, 31 October 2010 18:15 (thirteen years ago) link

Mannsplain Steamroller (goole), Thursday, 4 November 2010 17:17 (thirteen years ago) link

i'm still enjoying it, just about to go to mexico. capturing an acid-spitting zombie alive and delivering it on horseback was a tough and uniquely red dead mission.

bows don't kill people, arrows do (Jordan), Thursday, 4 November 2010 17:28 (thirteen years ago) link

it's legit scary!! i've always wanted a shooter game where continually low ammo is a real problem. delivers!

Mannsplain Steamroller (goole), Thursday, 4 November 2010 17:30 (thirteen years ago) link

I haven't had any problem with ammo shortages in this game. None at all. Am I playing it wrong or something?

Also I'm having an impossible time killing all four types of zombies in one deadeye meter. Does it count if you tie them all up and just shoot them on the ground?

antexit, Thursday, 4 November 2010 18:08 (thirteen years ago) link

well i did just start... i expect you build up a store over time yeah. plus i'm shooting a lot.

Mannsplain Steamroller (goole), Thursday, 4 November 2010 18:09 (thirteen years ago) link

by the time i got to mcfarlane's farm i ran out and had to run around & use the torch, but now i've got plenty (goes quick though, i've left people to die on the roadside because i don't want to spare the ammo).

bows don't kill people, arrows do (Jordan), Thursday, 4 November 2010 18:15 (thirteen years ago) link

I find it helps if you kill all the humans after you're done helping them, as well. Hot tip: when you win the shooting competitions that spawn randomly, if you shoot the guy after he gives you your winnings you get twice the ammo. (It's a morally ambiguous universe, guys)

antexit, Thursday, 4 November 2010 19:07 (thirteen years ago) link

I usually just carry the torch as the primary weapon until there are more than 3-4 zombos. Then, its deadeye repeater rifle time. Fuckers stand NO chance.

You do get to collect more ammo the longer you play. Shooting is really moved back to option #2 because of the lack of large amounts of available ammo. The torch executions can be pretty effective if you're quick about them.

I just realized (by consulting a wiki) that the animal species I'm missing in the single player campaign of the main game is a DUCK. What fucking ducks? Where is a duck?

antexit, Thursday, 4 November 2010 22:13 (thirteen years ago) link

ducks are in the very very very end of the game iirc
