If you don't have enough time to play fun games then you probably shouldn't play this fun game.

no gut busting joke can change history (polyphonic), Thursday, 2 September 2010 20:13 (fifteen years ago)

yeah if i am not being clear here i have def got more solid enjoyment out of this than any other game thats come out this year i think. like i am pretty sure ill never finish red dead but i am certain that ill finish this

gg eileen (jjjusten), Thursday, 2 September 2010 20:15 (fifteen years ago)

also no runthrough could really do this justice, the instrusions of bizzaro crazy kinda come from all angles. random conversations with NPCs that are otherwise obviously useless can yield fantastic results for example.

not to keep sounding like the street team for this - its def not for everyone - but its way better than the whole "so bad its good" thing, it stands up as a really legitimately entertaining (albeit sometimes frustrating) experience. whoever suggested rolling through on simple difficulty is otm though, yer def not playing this for the game mechanics.

gg eileen (jjjusten), Thursday, 2 September 2010 20:20 (fifteen years ago)

or watch the giantbomb dudes play it

I wish they would shut the fuck up.

yeah there is that

ultimusmoron (cozen), Friday, 3 September 2010 07:29 (fifteen years ago)

pro tip: get some infinite ammo weapons early in the game, or you will break something in your house in response to the section w/several wall crawling ghosty things.

still digging this, although ive definitely missed out on some side missions and whatever. the bizarroness is starting to gel into something fascinating beyond lols tho - i think there might actually be something intriguing going on behind all this o_O stuff. we'll see.

am flabbergasted that this has a thread dedicated to it. bought this used a few weeks ago after hearing of its rep and this game is genuinely fucking incredible, like video game outsider art.

berner herzog (fadanuf4erybody), Thursday, 7 February 2013 22:06 (thirteen years ago)

i am so amazed that there are still used copies of this out in the wild, i assumed that by now they all would have been snapped up, but i see them all the time.

anyone who hasnt played this is missing out on what is arguably the most interesting thing to ever come out on the 360. no lie.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 7 February 2013 22:20 (thirteen years ago)

i still haven't played my copy but it's sitting at home waiting for a good free chunk of time

Mordy, Thursday, 7 February 2013 22:20 (thirteen years ago)

ha trust me, you may not want to sit down for long stretches with this one, yer brain might melt

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Thursday, 7 February 2013 22:54 (thirteen years ago)

Someday I will give this game a second effort. I got a good chunk of the way in but not far enough to get to the meat of the game, I think.

pun lovin criminal (polyphonic), Thursday, 7 February 2013 22:57 (thirteen years ago)

it's very much the kind of game you have to play in small doses. i tried spending a few hours playing it and it just got exhausting. is there anything nearly this singularly bizarre from this console generation? i've been picking up a lot of weirder used games on the cheap lately--Earth Defense Force, 50 Cent: Blood on the Sand, Bulletstorm, Binary Domain, etc. etc.--but the closest analogue I can think of for this is some semi-competent blend of Suda 51, Shenmue, and Twin Peaks.

deluxe mega super fun ok version of this is now out for ps3, you have no excuse people

sounds like they didnt really fuck with it much which is good.

O_o-O_O-o_O (jjjusten), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 21:45 (thirteen years ago)

I watch the Giant Bomb playthru vids of this in hotels at night when I'm on the road.

The main character evoking Andrew Dice Clay when he lights a cigarette never doesn't make me laugh

Hockey Drunk (kingfish), Wednesday, 1 May 2013 21:51 (thirteen years ago)

Should I buy the ps3 version today y/n

adam, Wednesday, 8 May 2013 14:05 (thirteen years ago)

Reworked control system allowing for an even better combat experience

Even better!

I need to finish this on the Xbox but would be interested in an enhanced PC version.

"This game is using the motion detection in your controller" nooooooooo

lol

deX! (DJP), Wednesday, 20 November 2013 13:09 (twelve years ago)

Ok it does not appear to actually do this. Yet. Gameplay is less clunky so far?

Wendy Carlos Williams (jjjusten), Friday, 22 November 2013 05:51 (twelve years ago)

they finally patched the PC version to enable controller support so looks like it's time

Ok it's goddamn free for ps+ let's hear some reports here people.

a strawman stuffed with their collection of 12 cds (jjjusten), Thursday, 11 December 2014 20:36 (eleven years ago)

The opening cinematic is one of the weirdest, most unsettling things I've ever seen.

The game tutorial appears to make no sense.

I'm pretty much convinced that the POV character is mentally-unstable after 3 minutes of monologue.

Haven't been playing much due to babies + mother-in-law + Borderlands prequel but this appears to be an entirely insane game on first glance.

the farakhan of gg (DJP), Thursday, 11 December 2014 20:55 (eleven years ago)

Disappointing lack of responses people

a strawman stuffed with their collection of 12 cds (jjjusten), Sunday, 21 December 2014 22:23 (eleven years ago)

a friend got ps+ strictly to get this for free which, there are definitely worse choices

papa smango (fadanuf4erybody), Sunday, 21 December 2014 23:33 (eleven years ago)

I'm trying to remember why I stopped playing this a while back. I think it was the driving, because the driving is the worst driving in any game ever.

Simply The Bessed! (Old Lunch), Monday, 22 December 2014 05:45 (eleven years ago)

the first driving bit is a jump-off point for a lot of people who somehow slug it through the first terrible hour. it's genuinely really bad.

papa smango (fadanuf4erybody), Monday, 22 December 2014 06:16 (eleven years ago)

I made it to the part where you first get the car. Was considering giving up on it because it hasn't been weird/funny/interesting enough to justify the tedious gameplay up to that point, but the thread has convinced me to keep at it. Unfortunately won't be around my PS3 for the next two weeks though :/.

circa1916, Monday, 22 December 2014 13:12 (eleven years ago)

Remember to talk to everyone all the time. Including when you are alone in the car, makes the driving not really matter so much.

a strawman stuffed with their collection of 12 cds (jjjusten), Monday, 22 December 2014 14:58 (eleven years ago)

Well, or the gameplay in general, to be fair.

a strawman stuffed with their collection of 12 cds (jjjusten), Monday, 22 December 2014 16:12 (eleven years ago)

i just stayed up until 530am to beat this game for the first time

(after doing the same thing last night too, and another couple of nights during my time off for the holidays)

i'm so disappointed with myself for waiting this long. i was really expected a lot of "bad"ness, but really it's just a lot of "weird"ness -- maybe playing the director's cut is what made it less bad? (as i understand, some of the QTE stuff is less dumb, but on the other hand they add some wholly useless & kind of damaging story wraparound).

but anyway, WOW WOW WOW, yeah. this game is absolutely one of the most interesting games of the 360/ps3 generation. story was weirdly super affecting. obv the twin peaks reference is VITAL to this. it is kind of astounding that someone got to make a game that was pitched to investors as a game version of twin peaks (thru a japanese lens).

maybe the best game comparison i can think of is earthbound. weird america, but as seen by a japanese gamemaker, full of weirdness, marketed as badness but so so so good.

magi mane - the myrrhprint (Will M.), Sunday, 4 January 2015 10:40 (eleven years ago)

oh! and metal gear solid. reminds me a lot of that. this is a really really special game.

magi mane - the myrrhprint (Will M.), Sunday, 4 January 2015 10:55 (eleven years ago)

and i jsut noticed that D4 is free to xbox gold subscribers, and my roommate just got an xbox one, and is out of town until thursday, and is a gold member, and ohhhhyeeeeeaaaahhh i'll be playing that too

magi mane - the myrrhprint (Will M.), Monday, 5 January 2015 15:26 (eleven years ago)

yeah, i think the greatness of this game did get buried in the so bad its good vibe like i said upthread. there are some really shocking and startlingly emotional moments, and they are so interesting within this alien landscape of oddness rather than badness - def a game where i suspect many reviewers just didnt give it time to turn into what it really is and just got hung up on the gameplay, to which i say hey man, people please choose to play og resident evil games, this is a hell of a lot better than that.

a strawman stuffed with their collection of 12 cds (jjjusten), Monday, 5 January 2015 18:18 (eleven years ago)

theres at least one murder scene (no spoilers) that rivals anything "dark" ive ever seen in videogaming, and when it drops into a game with the sinners sandwich and one sided conversations between the protagonist and himself its like a slap in the face.

a strawman stuffed with their collection of 12 cds (jjjusten), Monday, 5 January 2015 18:21 (eleven years ago)

last day free on ps+ i think, so get to it people

a strawman stuffed with their collection of 12 cds (jjjusten), Monday, 5 January 2015 18:29 (eleven years ago)

if it's the one i am thinking of... yeah. and also... fuck. now that i am thinking about it again i am like whoaaaaaaaaaa. there are some serious "play this a second time and notice things" moments popping out at me.

Wacha Underground (Will M.), Monday, 5 January 2015 18:43 (eleven years ago)

also mad props for making the game's most tragic character, like, not an utter embarrassing farce and really kinda pitiable in a real way (altho it gets DANGEROUSLY close to crossing that line)

Wacha Underground (Will M.), Monday, 5 January 2015 18:44 (eleven years ago)

damn man and the blindfold scenes. jjjusten thank you so much for beating the drum for this game as long as you did, it really pushed me to finally play it and i am so glad i did.

Wacha Underground (Will M.), Monday, 5 January 2015 18:47 (eleven years ago)

All right, maybe I'll get back onboard and push through the awful, awful driving when I'm done being addicted to GTA Online.

Wormy Noel (Old Lunch), Monday, 5 January 2015 19:04 (eleven years ago)

thing i wish someone had told me: once you cna start doing sidequests, complete quests 004 and 005 as soon as possible. the reward for 005 is fast travel.

play the 360 version. it's back compatible with the bone and series consoles too

if xbox is not an option, the various ports are all slightly worse than the 360 original: the director's cut extra content is pointless, game looks worse, performance is worse, crashes are more frequent. still worth checking out imo, but the switch one is the worst port of all i think

definitely don't bother with 2 unless you've played 1. i loved 1 but couldn't stomach 2, ymmv

chihuahuau, Tuesday, 15 June 2021 20:25 (four years ago)

yeah 2 was not well received even by huge fans of 1 so i stayed away. sounded like it was just worse all around - writing not as charming or engaging, performance downgraded from 'janky low budget game' to 'so broken it's barely playable'

This is the perfect steam deck to play beside my wife while she watches pretty little liars. I tried it when it came out and was one to jump out as soon as I had to jump in a car and navigate the games handling. Now, I’m having a ball. Very keen to try 2 as well, apparently the pc version fixes most/all of the performance woes of the switch

hrep (H.P), Friday, 4 August 2023 23:36 (two years ago)

Incredibly on brand for this game: The steam achievement for completing episode 1 spoils who the killer is in its description. Couldn’t help but laugh when I saw it come up at the bottom of my screen. Oh well, let’s see how it all unfolds!
