So i rolled up to the sun today.

That Bird level is just the most amazing thing ever, it just gets bigger and bigger and doesn't seem to want to stop.

Love it all! Apart from the campfire mission which bugs me a bit.

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 6 February 2006 00:06 (twenty years ago)

okay it's the best game ever made but is it worth paying £35 to play on a friend's PS2? n.b. this is more than i have paid for any game since the dreamcast died

tom west (thomp), Monday, 6 February 2006 11:34 (twenty years ago)

lolz at PAL

A BOLD QUAHOG (ex machina), Monday, 6 February 2006 11:47 (twenty years ago)

pretty much all current-gen games come with a 60hz option so eh

well, they used to

tom west (thomp), Monday, 6 February 2006 12:49 (twenty years ago)

JON OTM. Is it really worth playing games in squashed slow motion just for a few extra lines?

If I don't buy this tomorrow, I'm going to be sort of upset with myself. I suppose tonight I should play killer7 through and get all the creepy-nasty-sweary stuff out of my head for Katamari.

hey, i rolled up the sun on the same day!

sunny successor (katharine), Monday, 6 February 2006 14:19 (twenty years ago)

and I've played this all day today.

So someone has to help me, where the heck are the last 100 cranes on that origami level. I've been in every classroom and the locker room and still can't get much more than 900!

third room?

Ste (Fuzzy), Monday, 6 February 2006 22:39 (twenty years ago)

There are three different rooms on one side of the hall and a bathroom on the other side.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Monday, 6 February 2006 23:22 (twenty years ago)

what are you supposed to do during the end credits?

shadeball (chaki), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 00:13 (twenty years ago)

masterbate

sunny successor (katharine), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 05:17 (twenty years ago)

I'll have to have another look for that room, I'm sure my version doesn't have it etc etc

most satisfying multi-roll so far - the huge wooden fence at the zoo made up of individual logs.

Actually the third campfire mission is pretty good.

and where does it tell you how many more cousins you need to get? it seems like i have loads at the moment.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 09:28 (twenty years ago)

Has anybody else seen these official Katamari shirts?

No shipping to UK, unfortunately, but perhaps if some US ilXorz felt kindly towards us Brits...

aldo_cowpat (aldo_cowpat), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 11:22 (twenty years ago)

actually i really like that 'User' panic shirt, but it was sold out.

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 12:01 (twenty years ago)

I could do without the king popping up in the middle of the play area screen actually

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 13:25 (twenty years ago)

do you mean the loading when he shows you how to get to new areas or when he comments on what you've rolled up? the latter was really pissing me off in the beginning.

i like when he shows the way to new areas. i seemed to get lost a lot in katamari damacy

sunny successor (katharine), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 14:52 (twenty years ago)

yeah when he pops up and tells you about things you've rolled into, especially on the racing car level when he appears telling you how the katamari moves by itself EVERY TIME! I didn't mind the level loading either, when he shows where to head for next can be useful in frantic times.

i got just over 1,600m and it's still saying i can do bigger. wtf!

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 15:36 (twenty years ago)

you can roll up the king around 3000m! i saw the queen once too, but haven't managed to get her.

inert false cat (sleep), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 15:43 (twenty years ago)

eff ing hell!

Ste (Fuzzy), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 16:18 (twenty years ago)

it drives me crazy when the king shows up and makes bad jokes in the middle of the level and you can't see for shit

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 7 February 2006 16:27 (twenty years ago)

heheh, watching you guys discover this stuff is amazingly cute.

A BOLD QUAHOG (ex machina), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 06:53 (twenty years ago)

haha so i dreamt last night that i was rolling up everything in GTA San Andreas.

Ste (Fuzzy), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 09:27 (twenty years ago)

how big was the katamari before you could roll up big smoke?

sunny successor (katharine), Wednesday, 8 February 2006 15:30 (twenty years ago)

These people have been rolling up big smoke with their katamaris for quite awhile, sunny.

Ok, made a start on this, I'm about 2 hours in. Not sure I'm getting it though, yet.

The intro was all very annoying. "katamari is the best game ever! Everybody loves katamari! katamari has fans all around the world! Oh, but you've not been able to join in cos you're english haha". Made me not want to bother playing, right from the outset.

The manual is gorgeous. When the bear and the fox have a fight! Ace.

JimD (JimD), Thursday, 9 February 2006 13:27 (twenty years ago)

i cant believe youre getting insulted by a video game intro

sunny successor (katharine), Thursday, 9 February 2006 14:35 (twenty years ago)

i must've missed that intro

i like the dude with the crash helmet in the manual

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 9 February 2006 14:40 (twenty years ago)

"Is the Earth safe now? oh you rolled up all the countries in order to stop the asteroid?"
"Well anyway, everythings worked out okay"

or something

Ste (Fuzzy), Thursday, 9 February 2006 14:44 (twenty years ago)

Jim, or you have a gay TV?

A BOLD QUAHOG (ex machina), Thursday, 9 February 2006 19:43 (twenty years ago)

Eh?

I know, it's daft that it pissed me off, but...yeah, us europeans are used to waiting for stuff, and we understand the extra localistion time (translating to five languages or whatever it is) and everything, but for the last few years most things have got here within 4 or 5 months at worst, and lots of things have come out very soon after or even at the same time as they've been released elsewhere. And mostly it doesn't affect me anyway cos I've got a Japanese DS and an American cube, so the PS2 is the only machine I can't play imports on. But yeah, namco have been really quite shit this time round. For a game as big as katamari to not hit the UK in ANY form at all until 2 years after its original japanese release is bloody awful. And I don't even mind playing it late, it's not a big deal, it's the same game whenever I play it, doesn't matter...but then the intro was all about how great and successful the first game (which never got released here at all) was, and I dunno, it just felt...a bit insensitive.

But, heh, in trying to explain why it bugged me I've probably managed to sound much more upset about it than I actually am. :)

Much further into the game now, and liking it a lot more. It's still a bit flawed I think, and definitely isn't the best game I've ever played (in fact I'm probably enjoying AOE3 more, right now), but yes, it's lots of fun. Old lady level is tricky.

JimD (JimD), Thursday, 9 February 2006 23:58 (twenty years ago)

a game as big as katamari

It isn't that big. Electronic Arts keeps the good shit down. Fight the real enemy.

A BOLD QUAHOG (ex machina), Friday, 10 February 2006 00:06 (twenty years ago)

Well yeah, there's that.

JimD (JimD), Friday, 10 February 2006 00:13 (twenty years ago)

It's addictive, especially for those who are extra-susceptible to twee japanese stuff.

polyphonic (polyphonic), Friday, 10 February 2006 00:24 (twenty years ago)

Ok, today I rolled up big ben and godzilla and now I'm convinced, it's GREAT. I think a big part of the fun comes from the vengeance aspect - the rabbit/policeman/car that really annoyed me two minutes ago by bashing me halfway across the map when I just wanted to get past it is now STUCK TO MY BIG BALL! How'dya like them apples, you little bugger!? etc.

When I got up to my first c2000m katamari and was mopping up islands and countries and gods, I was thinking "man, this must be how Oppenheimer felt".

JimD (JimD), Friday, 10 February 2006 18:01 (twenty years ago)

I have the whole revenge thing going on too when I play, except I say 'oh! You better believe ill be back for you, bitch!'. I also enjoy hearing people scream when I roll them up. Especially a whole group at once.

sunny successor (katharine), Friday, 10 February 2006 20:41 (twenty years ago)

oh man i tried to buy it at virgin yesterday but it was sold out :(

ken c (ken c), Saturday, 11 February 2006 08:24 (twenty years ago)

It's sold out everywhere Ken :( I don't think I'm ever going to get this game!

melton mowbray (adr), Saturday, 11 February 2006 13:16 (twenty years ago)

you guys need to fix up etc.

jeffrey (johnson), Saturday, 11 February 2006 16:59 (twenty years ago)

fix up?

ken c (ken c), Sunday, 12 February 2006 01:41 (twenty years ago)

But it's not the same game, you're playing the sequel.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Sunday, 12 February 2006 11:22 (twenty years ago)

You know that area just next to the swimming pool where kids often hang out playing sports and stuff? I saw a panda there the other day, and seeing a panda in a playground/sports court reminded me of panda from tekken, and then I wondered whether it was a conscious reference, what with them both being namco games.
