(still haven't thrown anybody out yet)

ditto. haven't stolen a base either.

I've stolen 2, been thrown out stealing maybe 10 times. With stolen bases, and close plays at any base, the AI is totally strict. You must be clearly, obviously, way safe. Anything else is frustrating. (glad I didn't choose the stolen base goal at the beginning of the season!)

The part I have the most trouble with is baserunning, especially in situations where you want one runner to advance and another to stay. I always end up missing the tiny icon repeatedly, and then by the time I manage to press it I'm basically just running into an out.

Z S, Friday, 13 August 2010 19:03 (fifteen years ago)

In other words, I have lots of games where I wind up with 10-15 hits and 3 runs or something because of all the baserunning mistakes.

Z S, Friday, 13 August 2010 19:03 (fifteen years ago)

me too! I just never try to stretch hits anymore (unless I'm using rollins, dude can run)

dyao, Friday, 13 August 2010 19:11 (fifteen years ago)

One thing I'm worried about, though, over the course of a season - do the other teams improve as well? I'm worried because if I'm already winning most of my games at the beginning of a season, with a bunch of low-level cards, won't I just be mowing people down halfway through with a bunch of rare and platinum card players?

Z S, Friday, 13 August 2010 19:15 (fifteen years ago)

One thing that bugs me about base advancing is that there isn't any nuance. If I want the 3rd base guy to advance to home, and there's a guy on 1st base, and hit the advance button, they both move -- which can lead to the inning ending early instead of the extra run I'm shooting for.

Mordy, Friday, 13 August 2010 19:19 (fifteen years ago)

That's the thing, there's a way to do it - you can press the button corresponding to the baserunner you want to advance, and they'll advance by themselves and the other runner will stay. So it's possible. But unfortunately in practical terms it's very difficult to accomplish, it just never seems to work reliably.

Z S, Friday, 13 August 2010 19:20 (fifteen years ago)

Hmmm, I'll have to mess around with it. I only ever noticed the two buttons -- the red one and the green one.

Mordy, Friday, 13 August 2010 19:28 (fifteen years ago)

Woo. 8-8 against the Mets until the 11th inning when Ryan Howard smacked a homerun out of the park and then Brad Lidge closed down the other side (after Madsen panicked and loaded up the bases). <3 u 9 Innings

Mordy, Sunday, 15 August 2010 17:34 (fifteen years ago)

bought & won 1st game 7-5 when luis castillo hit a 2 run hr in the bottom of the 8th (so realistic! lol)

johnny crunch, Sunday, 15 August 2010 19:13 (fifteen years ago)

i'm still playing the old version, can't wait to play with real players (though i sort of like how dinky the graphics are.. it reminds me of the great Micro League Baseball - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MicroLeague_Baseball )

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Monday, 16 August 2010 10:35 (fifteen years ago)

im really dumb but i cant for the life of me figure out how to use the cards im getting..? is it cuz im in season mode i cant swap them in? do i really have to play 162 games to use my jeff suppan rare card!>?!?@

johnny crunch, Monday, 16 August 2010 11:09 (fifteen years ago)

you exit league mode and go to my cardbox, then you can swap and level up your players and stuff

(have feeling you're gonna need to buy their 'assist' cards or w/e for 99 cents a pop because the failure rate oncey ou get past level 3 is pretty high and it costs thousands of points a try too)

dyao, Monday, 16 August 2010 12:20 (fifteen years ago)

i was in my cardbox for like 40(ok like 5) minutes last night! i managed to swap my cheerleader but couldnt figure out players

johnny crunch, Monday, 16 August 2010 13:00 (fifteen years ago)

You go into your player box (leftmost tab), doubletap on the player you want to replace, then switch to your bench (the tabs in the middle) and doubletap on the player you want to substitute in. I agree, btw, it's not intuitive at all!

s1ocki when you say 4s are truly evil i feel as though you've elevated to another plane of wizardry. i am still on the humble grasshopper plane of getting rid of 1s and 6s. 4s seems like a friend - so easy to dispose of! do you mean that 4s are evil in the end game? because yes, there i can agree.

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 17 August 2010 11:54 (fifteen years ago)

kinda hate how the computer in 9 innings will let you pitch 5 perfect innings and then belt off 3 doubles in a row despite you pitching everything to them outside the strike zone

but the computer lets you do that sometimes too

I don't think I've played a game yet where the final combined score was less than 10 runs

dyao, Tuesday, 17 August 2010 12:05 (fifteen years ago)

i've had 1-0 games in the previous versh of 9 innings

progressive cuts (Tracer Hand), Tuesday, 17 August 2010 12:15 (fifteen years ago)

9 innings won't let me listen to music while playing ://///

6s u definitely need to keep your eye on in the lower stages (they're major cock-blockers), but nothing is worse than seeing a 4 pop up at '5' row or above. i mean, the real worst is a 5 on 6 level or 6 on 7 level but at that point you're usually fucked anyway. 4s on level 5 and up are just deadly. 1s, you can usually dig out or work around no matter where they are. i mean, not always, especially when they're all in a cluster (worst is like, 1211), but on their own they're easy to dispatch.

god i've thought about this a lot.

the disappearance of apollo creed (s1ocki), Tuesday, 17 August 2010 13:09 (fifteen years ago)

so uh I got my first 'tie' in 9 innings 2011 today. went 12 innings and the game just ended and now I have a tie on my record. found out that ties are acceptable in japanese baseball so maybe this game is following japanese baseball rules?

also found out this neat fact

Other differences from MLB are that the general play is less aggressive, there are fewer home runs, the strike zone is larger near the batter but smaller away from the batter, and the ball is slightly smaller and wound more tightly.

? (dyao), Thursday, 19 August 2010 13:33 (fifteen years ago)

I suck at 9 innings. Although I just realized you have to level up your cards. What determines if it fails or not?

Jeff, Thursday, 19 August 2010 13:35 (fifteen years ago)

Also, my pitchers wear out quick fast. Especially if a couple of runners get on. I'm lucky if I can get my starters to go 4 innings.

Jeff, Thursday, 19 August 2010 13:36 (fifteen years ago)

whether or not you buy those cards that increase the chance of it going through

all my players are at level 3, some at level 4 right now. was getting frustrated with too many failed level ups + level ups costing 1000-2000 points a pop after level 3, and I refuse to buy my way to success, although it seems that this system actually reflects pretty well how MLB works. my team seems to be doing alright though

xp the more hits/runs your pitcher gives up the faster his stamina goes down. I've pitched a few complete games so far with javier vasquez

? (dyao), Thursday, 19 August 2010 13:38 (fifteen years ago)

Got a rare Joe Mauer card and he is srsly like 7/9 so far

johnny crunch, Sunday, 22 August 2010 22:19 (fifteen years ago)

I have some games where I use every one of my relief pitchers. So I'm fucked for the next game. Seriously, these guys need to keep their shit together if they give up one goddamn base hit. I've never cursed more at an iphone game in my life.

Jeff, Sunday, 22 August 2010 22:44 (fifteen years ago)

yeah, starters can barely reach 75 pitches. also I am pretty sure I got out for bunting fair (!) with two strikes

wish there was an stl team :(

bnw, Monday, 23 August 2010 02:45 (fifteen years ago)

whaaat? I'm using the stl team.

Z S, Monday, 23 August 2010 02:46 (fifteen years ago)

waht!

bnw, Monday, 23 August 2010 02:47 (fifteen years ago)

upgrade a dude to level 3 and next at bat I get the same dude but higher stats and only at level 1

dyao, Monday, 23 August 2010 02:48 (fifteen years ago)

lol i bought the wrong one. its pretty fun though!

bnw, Monday, 23 August 2010 02:50 (fifteen years ago)

Normally hang around ILB, but thought I'd post to say that a friend of my brother's just completed a game for the iphone. Not actually played it myself, but it sounds ok -

Review here.

Drop7 is kind of blowing up my brain in that I keep looking at everyday objects and thinking, "If I drop a four on top of that, it will all disappear..."

Finally got a complete game in 9 innings. 40 games into the season, I'm finally starting to have a decent team.

Jeff, Wednesday, 25 August 2010 16:58 (fifteen years ago)

my beloved Tampa Rays (GO YOU RAYS) is batting like .392 and has a team ERA of around 2 (both first in the league), yet we're still 4 games behind the Yankees for the division title.

is this the best game available for the iPhone? as much as I love Peggle & Drop7 & Canabalt & WWF I'm starting to think yes.
