Stevie Wonder in a weird phase during the 80's (stevie), Tuesday, 11 May 2010 07:14 (sixteen years ago)

three weeks pass...

I've decided to finally get a goddamn Xbox after finally starting the first Assassin's Creed on PS3 and discovering that the framerate makes it feel like wading through pudding. Between the AC games, Crackdown, Dead Rising and Bayonetta (and online multiplayer Worms and Catan with work chums) I figure it's worth it, and I should be able to have enough cash set aside in a couple of months. I am still worried about the hardware, though- no one I know with an Xbox has gone longer than 6 months without having to RMA it, they sound like jet engines compared to PS3 (or even a PC) and somehow my boss's Xbox managed to dig an enormous circular gouge into his Rock Band dvd, all the way around. The RROD/RMA thing doesn't bother me too much, but is the disc scratching thing common?

a black white asian pine ghost who is fake (Telephone thing), Monday, 7 June 2010 03:44 (sixteen years ago)

I've never had a disc scratched. I think the big worry is red rings of death, and even that is supposedly far more rare these days.

Mordy, Monday, 7 June 2010 03:46 (sixteen years ago)

Tt - wait a week for the Microsoft presser at E3 - increasingly convincing rumors floating around are hinting at a 360 revision being released shortly (we'll see). If true maybe some of these problems will finally be things of the past. Also maybe a price drop. Not sure the 360 framerate of Assassin's Creed was that good either though.

Jeff LeVine, Monday, 7 June 2010 04:05 (sixteen years ago)

Don't keep the 360 upright if there is dogs, kids or drunks running around your house. I got a ring around the Gears of War DVD and can't play it anymore. I play my 360 on its side now.

Also worth noting that I have one of the first 360s ever made (the second batch that came out) and it still works. I've never red-ringed it. It occasionally freezes the screen on a game if I play too long

I often hear that certain 360 games run more smoothly than PS3 versions

CaptainLorax, Monday, 7 June 2010 04:11 (sixteen years ago)

i noticed more pop up in the 360 version of gta4. fwiw, maybe that's why some of them run smoother.

the pop up texturing detail on RDR is woahful too, on 360. not seen it on ps3.

i for one am glad for my extra shrubs

Just read ther Head2Head for Red Dead on cozen's link and you're right, extra shrubs and generally better performance (for most things) on the 360 version. Overall I've been glad I got the 360 over PS3. Surprising how many people bought the PS3 a long time ago mostly because of the Final Fantasy game that didn't come out until recently

CaptainLorax, Monday, 7 June 2010 18:00 (sixteen years ago)

And that was on the 360 anyway!

Mordy, Monday, 7 June 2010 18:04 (sixteen years ago)

To be fair it was borked on 360.

JimD, Monday, 7 June 2010 23:22 (sixteen years ago)

Meh, the mechanics weren't that great anyway.

Mordy, Monday, 7 June 2010 23:25 (sixteen years ago)

Neo Geo Battle Coliseum came out today for just 800 points on XLBA and the shocking early reports are that the online code is actually decent...

Applejack is a doki doki panic style platform/puzzler. it costs 80gil and looks like this:

it seems decent thus far imo.

by doki doki panic style i mean you stand on enemies' heads and pick them up and throw them.

jsrf please

is there a more overrated console in the history of consoledom than the dc?

flamelurker (cozen), Thursday, 10 June 2010 16:16 (sixteen years ago)

good news since my dreamcast died :( and so far dreamcast emulators seem pretty shitty (or at least have given me mixed results). Hopefully we'll see Mars Matrix, Bangai-O and Jet Grind Radio.

Jeff LeVine, Thursday, 10 June 2010 16:18 (sixteen years ago)

Isn't JSRF already playable on 360s?

Nhex, Thursday, 10 June 2010 17:04 (sixteen years ago)

(hell I picked up a copy for a dollar years ago, despite never owning an Xbox)

Nhex, Thursday, 10 June 2010 17:05 (sixteen years ago)

I meant JGR/JSR

p.sure JSRF is backwards compatible yeah

flamelurker (cozen), Thursday, 10 June 2010 17:17 (sixteen years ago)

played so much crazy taxi back in the day. not sure i want to again though.

sonderangerbot, Thursday, 10 June 2010 17:20 (sixteen years ago)

haha - same feeling!

Nhex, Thursday, 10 June 2010 17:29 (sixteen years ago)

Actually this is making me think about it, what classics should be ported that haven't already?

Already ported to 360: Rez, Ikaruga, the first Soul Calibur, Marvel vs. Capcom 2, Garou. Lots of stuff was ported to PS2/Xbox/GC like Space Channel 5, SF3 Third Strike, Capcom vs. SNK 1/2, Skies of Arcadia.

So I guess that leaves Jet Set Radio, Shenmue and Chu Chu Rocket. Other ones that would be nice are Powerstone 1/2, Cannon Spike, JoJo's Bizarre Adventure - random SNK/Capcom fighters that were already ports, like Last Blade 2. Ooh - Project Justice would be pretty cool, actually. There are a few so-so cult titles that haven't aged well like Maken X or Sword of the Berzerk but there's practically no chance of seeing those.

It's possible that the only ones we'll see on 360 are from Sega anyway... The DC isn't really overrated when you take into account it only existed for a little over three years (10 months less for NA/EU!) and had so many good games in that time span - not even one dev cycle for most AAA games now.

Nhex, Friday, 11 June 2010 11:16 (sixteen years ago)

it's an unlockable avatar award for 'achieving' something the 80s version of LIPs I think

flamelurker (cozen), Friday, 11 June 2010 11:18 (sixteen years ago)

I've been playing a bunch of this recently
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ei2oeTlFhoQ
and you know what, it's amazing. really, really good and really fun. on sale at shopto right now btw for abt £6 iirc

flamelurker (cozen), Friday, 11 June 2010 13:49 (sixteen years ago)

I've played a lot of PGR 4 too - I really like the tracks and graphics. The bikes, I was never quite sold on, but was able to pretty much ingnore them and the game has a ton of content (also works good online). Even though I skipped the bike stuff (for the most part), the mixed car & bike racing left me feeling that the game was a little off. I also don't like the events that are purely about racking up kudos - have yet to really like the drifting component of any racing title. But ingnoring those two things, the game is like 80% of the time great?

Jeff LeVine, Friday, 11 June 2010 15:12 (sixteen years ago)

yeah, that's fair

gorgeous looking game too

flamelurker (cozen), Friday, 11 June 2010 15:13 (sixteen years ago)

I got it in a four game bundle with my xbox and played it for a few days - I'll maybe give it another go. I remember liking the London track.

Beware, I Hongro! (onimo), Saturday, 12 June 2010 09:50 (sixteen years ago)

Ok, my 360 is on the way. I'm happy they got rid of some of the more wtf design decisions (no built-in wifi, the weird way the hdmi port was set up if you wanted to use hdmi for video only and another connection for sound). I've also got a few games on the way- Assassin's Creed, Dead Rising and Crackdown- and a few XBLA titles I bought online during the E3 week half-off sale (N+ and Geometry Wars 2). That's another point in favor of XBL here, actually- the points thing is asinine but I love being able to add stuff to my download queue or make purchases without having to be at the console.

Any recommendations for must-have XBLA titles or cheap disc-based games? I've got a short list but in the years I've been ignoring the console I'm sure I've missed more than a few.

(My XBLA username is McClinticSphere, same as PSN, though that won't mean anything until I get my subscription set up.)

a black white asian pine ghost who is fake (Telephone thing), Monday, 21 June 2010 21:42 (sixteen years ago)

rez HD, trials HD and shadow complex are essential I think; the latter two were on deal recently iirc and might in fact still be

too much vuvuzela dangle (cozen), Monday, 21 June 2010 21:57 (sixteen years ago)

Thanks- Trials HD is definitely on the list. Shadow Complex looks fun, but I still have that visceral Orson Scott Card reaction to get over before I'm willing to pick it up.

I see that there's a compilation disc with Rez HD, Lumines, and Every Extend Extra Another Word That Starts With E That I Do Not Remember. Does anyone have this? It's cheaper than getting them separately, so that's kind of attractive, but if it doesn't let me install to the hard disc and wants me to put a disc in the drive every time I feel like firing up Lumines that may force me to download them from XBLA instead.

a black white asian pine ghost who is fake (Telephone thing), Tuesday, 22 June 2010 00:52 (sixteen years ago)

Lumines on XBLA is worth avoiding, it's a big fat "pay full price for less than half a game" skank. And if you take that out of the equation, you're presumably better off getting Rez and EEE(E?) as downloads anyway.

JimD, Tuesday, 22 June 2010 13:07 (sixteen years ago)

Disc version has most of the DLC, though

Nhex, Tuesday, 22 June 2010 13:12 (sixteen years ago)

ah ok.

JimD, Tuesday, 22 June 2010 13:13 (sixteen years ago)

So this crackdown 2 demo is uh garbage

AESTHOLE (jjjusten), Thursday, 24 June 2010 06:11 (sixteen years ago)

I dug out PGR4 for a wee run last night, I'm still embarrassingly early on in the career mode on noob level. I won a few races and got my ranking up to about 60 or something but I think I'll restart on a tougher difficulty. I still can't drive anything remotely rear endy in the wet though - I'm fish-tailing all over the place and can't seem to judge when to put the power down. Successful power slides seem to almost happen by accident - I'm blaming the game physics for that as I don't have the same issue with most other road racers.

this is gonna get messi (onimo), Thursday, 24 June 2010 08:04 (sixteen years ago)

im still kind of baffled by the crackdown 2 demo - not only is it pretty much no fun, i think the graphics and shooting/targeting/jumping seem actually worse and more broken than the original?

admittedly its been quite a while since the first one and i never really dug into it like a lot of people did, but jesus given all the hype thats preceeded this it seems pretty awful, esp for something that is (i think) a july release?

AESTHOLE (jjjusten), Thursday, 24 June 2010 21:49 (sixteen years ago)

i think the last time i was this "oh hell no" towards a demo was that stupid jetpack shooter thing and we all know how well that turned out. at least CSI was hilarious in its badness.

AESTHOLE (jjjusten), Thursday, 24 June 2010 21:51 (sixteen years ago)

Oh, I had heard good things about it. Apparently some people are digging the demo? (MTV Multiplayer even put up a way to crack the demo and give yourself unlimited time.)

Mordy, Thursday, 24 June 2010 21:52 (sixteen years ago)

xp

u and ur demos

I agree w/you here tho; I really dug the original crackdown but this seemed a bit same old same old and not especially pretty considering how many years have passed since the first

hi bianca :x (cozen), Thursday, 24 June 2010 21:52 (sixteen years ago)

idk, to each their own i guess, but the more i think of it the more it actually reminded me of that big multi-player shooter where they drop you in from orbit - section 8? which was just terrible xpost

yeah i do spend a lot of time obsessing over demos for some reason - i did resist the pull of the transformers one and that weird football thing called backbreaker because there just cant be any way they are good

AESTHOLE (jjjusten), Thursday, 24 June 2010 21:55 (sixteen years ago)

cozen, I said the same thing about Crackdown last September, but who was listening?
