that's not a problem unless you are trying to play with someone else with a moderate NAT or if you're playing halo 3 (for some reason it's really pernickety)

cozen, Saturday, 20 March 2010 20:00 (sixteen years ago)

It is ridiculous what they are asking for with those adapters. You're way better off hunting down a cheap wireless bridge, or picking up a DD-WRT capable router that lets you turn a standard wireless router into a bridge. Also has the nice benefit of giving you a 5-port ethernet-to-wireless bridge instead of 1 port, so you can hook up any other systems/computers/set top players you have lying around.

Nhex, Saturday, 20 March 2010 20:46 (sixteen years ago)

i totally agree that the price is insane, but they do work pretty damned well. they're evil fucks.

forksclovetofu, Saturday, 20 March 2010 21:13 (sixteen years ago)

got mine hooked up to one of those electric-plug based network systems, works pretty well.

I thought Darksiders was kinda fun but it's nothing special.

First and Last and Safeways ™ (jjjusten), Tuesday, 23 March 2010 08:55 (sixteen years ago)

i mean i am prepared for shitty plot exposition and voice acting in my video games but this is just embarrassing. also game mechanics seem kind of broken? or i am just shitty at this.

First and Last and Safeways ™ (jjjusten), Tuesday, 23 March 2010 08:57 (sixteen years ago)

how is perfect dark jim?

cozen, Tuesday, 23 March 2010 09:06 (sixteen years ago)

It's odd. It's all shiny and fast and smooth and HD, but at the same time it still looks like an N64 game, so that's sort of jarring. I've not played very much single player, online is great fun though. Maps may be a little unbalanced in retrospect - there are lots of little camping sites which weren't really usable in the original split screen multiplayer (you couldn't camp in them without everyone else knowing you were there) but are kind of unassailable once everyone's online. But I can't think of any other games where getting pwned repeatedly is still funny and fun.

Biggest problem I'm having with it though is motion sickness, which is really odd because I've not had that with any other fps since quake. 20 minutes in the temple and I need to go for a lie down.

JimD, Tuesday, 23 March 2010 11:49 (sixteen years ago)

I might as well give it a go.

take me to your lemur (ledge), Tuesday, 23 March 2010 11:51 (sixteen years ago)

The Splinter Cell demo is a lot less fun than the original Splinter Cell was, let alone all the games that have improved on it (like Batman!).

Game Room today. Snapped up Crystal Castles cos i <3 it. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to have been tested with a 360 controller - it's basically unplayable.

Not as bad as Asteroids Deluxe though, where the asteroids are almost invisible, for no apparent reason.

JimD, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 17:23 (sixteen years ago)

That's really one of the serious problems with this thing - the best of the early arcade games (Tempest, Centipede, etc) aren't going to work well with a 360 controller (they should put out a trackball and knob controller or something). The other serious problem is that the vast majority of these old Atari and Intellivision games are awful.

Still, I briefly tried Game Room out this morning and at least it seems like you can play every game for free for ten minutes (which is probably longer than I want to play any of them honestly) - not sure about this as the interface was confusing, then it stopped working, then it crashed my xbox, then I had to go to work. Definitely demo a game b4 you pick it up to see if the controls translate okay in the future.

Of course the most serious problem with this thing is you can play all these games perfectly emulated already for free and with very little effort, so spending a few bucks per game (even a halfway decent one) is hard to figure.

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 17:40 (sixteen years ago)

until they move into late 80's/early 90's arcade games, this thing is a joke

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 17:52 (sixteen years ago)

Better call than a Xbox wireless adapter: a used linksys router w/ third party firmware that turns it into a wireless bridge

Epic Battlefield 1943 session last night with a couple of pals (taking turns on the same machine). First time I've played in ages but one of the guys is a pro and I picked up some tips, got some decent scores for the first time. Kinda warmed me to the idea of getting BC but I still doubt I'd spend enough time to make it worthwhile.

etrian odysseus (cozen), Monday, 5 April 2010 18:57 (sixteen years ago)

USB storage update tomorrow, I meant to pick up a 16Gb stick to try it out with but forgot.

JimD, Monday, 5 April 2010 23:37 (sixteen years ago)

geometry wars 2 is on sale this week for 400 points for other people like me that are late to the game

HOT DISH THYME MACHINE (jjjusten), Tuesday, 6 April 2010 05:19 (sixteen years ago)

deadly premonition actually looks... OK... I think? I'd definitely pick it up if it was a £20 release over here like in america. unfortunately there's no word of a PAL version just yet

etrian odysseus (cozen), Tuesday, 6 April 2010 11:12 (sixteen years ago)

yeah that game room is laughable, dl it recently and could not believe that it wanted to charge me for such ancient crappy games that i can play legally and free elsewhere

passed 10K gamerscore/achievements/whatever last night which is kinda sad but mostly lol i guess.

least they could have done is given my avatar like repetitive stress injury gauntlets or something, maybe a gauntness and paleness upgrade with a few flies circling overhead.

HUMAN VELOCIPEDE (jjjusten), Wednesday, 5 May 2010 22:32 (sixteen years ago)

10K isn't that bad. I'm almost there (currently at 9k) and I don't think I've played my Xbox super obsessively.

Mordy, Wednesday, 5 May 2010 22:33 (sixteen years ago)

I think I have 16k

Mordy, Tuesday, 11 May 2010 00:12 (sixteen years ago)

Stevie Wonder in a weird phase during the 80's (stevie), Tuesday, 11 May 2010 07:14 (sixteen years ago)

three weeks pass...

I've decided to finally get a goddamn Xbox after finally starting the first Assassin's Creed on PS3 and discovering that the framerate makes it feel like wading through pudding. Between the AC games, Crackdown, Dead Rising and Bayonetta (and online multiplayer Worms and Catan with work chums) I figure it's worth it, and I should be able to have enough cash set aside in a couple of months. I am still worried about the hardware, though- no one I know with an Xbox has gone longer than 6 months without having to RMA it, they sound like jet engines compared to PS3 (or even a PC) and somehow my boss's Xbox managed to dig an enormous circular gouge into his Rock Band dvd, all the way around. The RROD/RMA thing doesn't bother me too much, but is the disc scratching thing common?

a black white asian pine ghost who is fake (Telephone thing), Monday, 7 June 2010 03:44 (sixteen years ago)

I've never had a disc scratched. I think the big worry is red rings of death, and even that is supposedly far more rare these days.

Mordy, Monday, 7 June 2010 03:46 (sixteen years ago)

Tt - wait a week for the Microsoft presser at E3 - increasingly convincing rumors floating around are hinting at a 360 revision being released shortly (we'll see). If true maybe some of these problems will finally be things of the past. Also maybe a price drop. Not sure the 360 framerate of Assassin's Creed was that good either though.

Jeff LeVine, Monday, 7 June 2010 04:05 (sixteen years ago)

Don't keep the 360 upright if there is dogs, kids or drunks running around your house. I got a ring around the Gears of War DVD and can't play it anymore. I play my 360 on its side now.

Also worth noting that I have one of the first 360s ever made (the second batch that came out) and it still works. I've never red-ringed it. It occasionally freezes the screen on a game if I play too long

I often hear that certain 360 games run more smoothly than PS3 versions

CaptainLorax, Monday, 7 June 2010 04:11 (sixteen years ago)

i noticed more pop up in the 360 version of gta4. fwiw, maybe that's why some of them run smoother.

the pop up texturing detail on RDR is woahful too, on 360. not seen it on ps3.

Just read ther Head2Head for Red Dead on cozen's link and you're right, extra shrubs and generally better performance (for most things) on the 360 version. Overall I've been glad I got the 360 over PS3. Surprising how many people bought the PS3 a long time ago mostly because of the Final Fantasy game that didn't come out until recently

CaptainLorax, Monday, 7 June 2010 18:00 (sixteen years ago)

And that was on the 360 anyway!
