On the Mac/PC it does, though not all the way, just a few minutes forward.

SHERMAN'S MARCH - _really_ long 1986 documentary about a guy moving from relationship to relationship in the South, following the march of Sherman (which he's ostensibly being paid by the NEA to make a film about). Notable for the ahead of its times style, some remarkably inciteful camera work, the characters he spends time with and the wild time capsule of early '80's america. not for people who can't handle emo attitude, self-obsession or 2 1/2 hour films where virtually nothing happens.

That doc sort of sucked. But still I watch Ross McElwee docs even though he talks about the same shit all the time. You wish he would just get over himself and his boring ass issues.
I prob like bright leaves the best.

Who's Harry Crumb
wish I had listened to my cousin's reco when I was 11. This movie is hilarious! Well, except for the O_o stereotype bits.

Maybe I should say that I hate myself after watching and mildly enjoying his long ass docs about his womens and dad issues.
― Jeff, Saturday, 20 March 2010 18:02 (sixteen years ago)
Jeff, does he just do this same movie over and over? My first exposure to this cat.
― forksclovetofu, Saturday, 20 March 2010 18:04 (sixteen years ago)
Essentially, yes. He even uses the same footage over. Like the scene with his sister and him in the boat is used again.
Bright Leaves is interesting though, he talks about his familys history in creating the big tobacco industry.

Check out 'Street Thief' - good Chicago crime movie

I just finally subscribed to Netflix and set this up (on the 360). Sort of feels life changing (LOL). A little browsing and I already have 33 things in my instant queue and seven in the DVD queue - overwhelming. Was surprised with how easy it was to set up and how great it worked (HD picture quality pretty much equal to what I get via Time Warner Cable).
I didn't see it mentioned in the recommendations above, but I noticed the first five seasons of Saturday Night Live are available for instant viewing.
― Jeff LeVine, Monday, 22 March 2010 04:23 (sixteen years ago)
Out of curiosity, does Netflix actually have HD streaming? I heard that they did, but I'm guessing it's only available on specific movies. The standard DVD-quality stuff still looks good, but I was wondering if there are 720 or 1080-quality examples?
― Nhex, Monday, 22 March 2010 04:45 (sixteen years ago)
good luck Jeff; you get lost down the rabbit hole pretty quick.
it's movie specific and they'll mention if it's available. Try 'The Orphanage', it's pretty lush. When it's on and you can get a good connection the picture is excellent. 'Bronson' was clean as I could ask for.
― forksclovetofu, Monday, 22 March 2010 04:55 (sixteen years ago)
er "the HD is movie specific"
Hmm, don't see that on the Mac here. Maybe it's only mentioned on the TV players.
― Nhex, Monday, 22 March 2010 05:19 (sixteen years ago)
I really recommend building up your queue online instead of through the 360 interface. Much faster and easier.

I love Sherman's March, though it's the only one of dude's films I've seen. I've had Bright Leaves on my Play It Now queue for months but haven't been motivated to watch it.
― congratulations (n/a), Monday, 22 March 2010 15:22 (sixteen years ago)
I've heard that his other films are fairly annoying, but I loved SM a lot so I'd like to decide for myself.

For whoever it was that enjoyed the Seijun Suzuki films, like Branded to Kill or Tokyo Drifter, I highly recommend the slightly less well known Pale Flower (dir. Masashiro Shinoda), which is also available for streaming. It's a slightly more coherent, but equally stylized Yakuza film.

i highly recommend THE DARK CRYSTAL

Holy crap, they added a lot of Fox TV shows today. All of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, Arrested Development, 24, Prison Break, Dollhouse, Firefly, X-Files. Also, Black Adder.

Is there any good way to sort the newly released instant watch stuff? I always just seem to get a random assortment - didn't see any new criterions :(
― Jeff LeVine, Saturday, 3 April 2010 17:22 (sixteen years ago)
You can queue and view from here:http://instantwatcher.com/titles/new_infinite

also, here's a pretty avidly updated criterion list:http://www.netflix.com/StrangerLists?prid=160493531&showList=360796&lnkctr=t10lstsMp

Thanks forks, that instantwatcher was exactly the kind of thing I was looking for - much better than browsing the messed up netflix site as it actually makes sense - cool (weird?) it's all linked up too
― Jeff LeVine, Saturday, 3 April 2010 17:43 (sixteen years ago)
i check that site kinda daily.

Does anybody remember the name of that documentary about movie lovers in NYC who spend all their time going from theater to theater all day trying to see everything - probably came out 5-7 years ago?

Instantwatcher is really nice, but everybody forgets that Netflix puts out RSS feeds (which are updated faster than IW):
http://www.netflix.com/RSSFeeds
Your Queue, New Releases and New Choices to Watch Instantly are good. If you're not checking your reader daily though, it might be too much to sort through since new stuff gets added every day or so.
― Nhex, Saturday, 3 April 2010 23:03 (sixteen years ago)
Also I love that the dude who is tracking all the Criterion releases is also tracking all the Troma movies.
