-a single hot pepper
-ginger that is edging towards retirement
-eggs
-salsa

let me share a tip with you: if you keep ginger in the freezer and just grate it as you need it you will never have to retire any ginger ever again. also, frozen ginger is very easy to grate.

Must note I keep a very well stocked pantry, always have canned tomatoes, tuna fish, beans, rice, pasta, grains, oils/spices/seasonings, dry milk on hand. Also a freezer stocked with pastured meats, and I make my own stock/render lard/etc). And there are 4 dozen eggs in the fridge too plus a pile of various cheeses. Also, beets/winter squashes/yams/potatoes variously around all the time.

Went to Trader Joe's last night to stock up on a few things they do really well:

masala simmer sauce
green curry simmer sauce
maple syrup
sun dried tomatoes
pine nuts
walnut pieces
candied ginger
popup sponges

so that was the list. In addition, I got:
brioche
rye bread
black forest ham
pastrami
gyoza
individual quiches
pumpkin butter
some french puff pastry almond cream dessert thing

b/c it is not a good idea to shop when you are hungry

Jaq, if you're ever in a candying mood, make your own candied ginger! I have a quart jar of the stuff that would have cost me $40-50 if I'd paid retail.

WmC, Wednesday, 28 October 2009 16:17 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh, good idea! Do you peel it first, then just simmer in syrup like for citrus peel?

Jaq, Wednesday, 28 October 2009 16:27 (fourteen years ago) link

Yep, exactly the same. I blanched it in a couple of changes of water first. I overdid mine a little so it's more like caramelized ginger than candied ginger, but it turned out fine really.
