I like all sorts of olives, although the oil-cured black ones that are really really intense are perhaps a bit really really intense for me.

As I child I would sit and eat a whole can (yes CAN, and store brand no less) of black pitted olives in one sitting. These were the only olives I knew until my '20s.

Now I particularly enjoy nicoise, but I'll eat all these olives, really.

quincie, Monday, 19 January 2009 00:37 (fifteen years ago) link

I still eat a can of black olives sometimes.

"cheese things"?

cheese things: like ginger. delicious but not something you can tear off a hunk of and eat.

schlump, Monday, 19 January 2009 00:43 (fifteen years ago) link

But you can do that with cheese.

I still can't wrap my tongue around olives but maybe it's because I've only had shitty salad bar olives? if I upgrade and get some of those olives in a jar with garlic will that be better?

囧 (dyao), Thursday, 17 December 2009 02:00 (fourteen years ago) link

YES dyao YES. Any kind of properly marinaded or salted olives will hit the spot beautifully. Also, I am indeed half Greek Cypriot, I confess. Olives come with the territory. Not that this makes them any less wondrous. I can't think of a single downside to olives.

er you don't need to salt them yourself! hopefully the shop will have done that for you. the black olives are best salted, the green olives best marinaded in garlic etc, but you can swap them over

like having an eternal kazoo in your underwear (acoleuthic), Thursday, 17 December 2009 02:48 (fourteen years ago) link

haha I meant salt and olives in some kind of liquid contained in a jar, not implying that I was going to marinate them myself! lol

From birth until about 5 months ago I had completely avoided olives in any form. Then this summer I bought a jar of tomato sauce that I didn't know had olives in it and HEY GUESS WHAT they aren't too bad.
Now I'm at the stage where I'll pickup a jar, shake it around a bit, look at the floaty stuff, but put it back on the shelf and get some pickles. Those garlic stuffed jams though - if they have them at ShopRite I'll def get a jar.

like(from wikipedia)
Freshly picked olive fruit is not palatable because it contains phenolic compounds and oleuropein, a glycoside which makes the fruit too bitter, although not unhealthy.[31] (One exception is the Thassos olive, which can be eaten fresh.)[citation needed] There are many ways of processing olives for eating. Traditional methods use the natural microflora on the fruit and procedures which select for those flora that ferment the fruit. This fermentation leads to three important outcomes: the leaching out and breakdown of oleuropein and phenolic compounds; the creation of lactic acid, which is a natural preservative; and a complex of flavoursome fermentation products. The result is a product which will store with or without refrigeration.

Olives are one of the most extensively cultivated fruit crops in the world.[35] In 2008 there were 10.8 million hectares planted with olive trees, which is more than twice the amount of land devoted to apples, bananas or mangoes. Only coconut trees and oil palms command more spac

I love olives. Everyone in my family loves olives. At Thanksgiving we put olives out & it's mortal kombat to get your share.

Yet if we have other "grown-ups" over they'll invariably be amazed that my kids love olives. wtf?
