My dad is from a neighboring country to Chile & he puts mayo on hot dogs too. terrifying.
― droit au butt (Euler), Friday, 23 March 2018 20:59 (six years ago) link
Ugh, I am in Chile now and the mayo is out of control here.

not a fan of chilean food. all the good shit they ripped from peruvian cuisine lol
― marcos, Friday, 23 March 2018 21:01 (six years ago) link
I think Korean food is way overpriced for what it is. I think I only like kimchee. All the filipino food I have had has been disgusting.
― Yerac, Friday, 23 March 2018 21:01 (six years ago) link
ceviche, lomito, even a goddamn pisco sour is all better in peru
― marcos, Friday, 23 March 2018 21:02 (six years ago) link
man i fuckin love korean food
Someone who was fairly "worldly", half asian/french was telling me about an awesome fried chicken place in Santiago. She took me and I totally trusted her, forgetting that ultimately she was chilean. It was basically bland chicken nuggets served with mayo.

the only cuisines I don’t much like are not controversial eg british
― droit au butt (Euler), Friday, 23 March 2018 21:03 (six years ago) link
The pisco sour is 10xs better in peru but I like any mix drink with egg whites. I kind of think the ceviche is the same in both, but we make our white fish ceviche a lot and never go for the mariscos mixtos.
― Yerac, Friday, 23 March 2018 21:04 (six years ago) link
The empanadas in chile are also dire.

― Louis Jägermeister (jim in vancouver), Friday, 23 March 2018 21:06 (six years ago) link
They are basic. The empanadas in Peru and Argentina are much better.

probably I’m the only one on ilx who has opinions about bolivian foodI like it
― droit au butt (Euler), Friday, 23 March 2018 21:07 (six years ago) link
Oh, is that where your dad is from? The last time I tried to go to Bolivia there was a surprise visa that I didn't know about so we just went to the atacama instead.
― Yerac, Friday, 23 March 2018 21:09 (six years ago) link
Korean noodle and rice dishes all kind of suck. The only thing fun is doing the barbecue.

I could eat indian food every meal of the week. Mmmmm.
There are a couple of very good traditional chilean restaurants with a modern twist, near fine dining. And chile does kind of have near the only real wine game in Latin America save for Argentina who got saved by malbec and torrontes.
― Yerac, Friday, 23 March 2018 21:23 (six years ago) link
o ya
to balance things out, definitely give props to chilean (and argentinean) wine
peruvian wine is really bad, tastes like sweet grape juice or something
don't mean to restart the war of the pacific
― F# A# (∞), Friday, 23 March 2018 21:25 (six years ago) link
i don't think this counts as an opinion
― brimstead, Friday, 23 March 2018 21:29 (six years ago) link
I don't like burgers. They all taste the same, like nothing, just some overcooked meat in stodgy bread. Just tried a five guys burger to see if it was any different, it was just like a McDonalds burger, but bigger, what is the point. French fries are also boring. I mean I get McDonalds and Burger King is cheap and convenient, but why would anyone want to spend more than £5 on this stuff I really cannot understand
― mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 23 March 2018 21:29 (six years ago) link
because it's everywhere
I think 95% of hamburgers are kind of terrible too. Eating crappy overdone ground meat for no reason.
― Yerac, Friday, 23 March 2018 21:31 (six years ago) link
Steaks are also boring. Thirty mouthfuls of the same mediocre taste and texture. But people seem to genuinely enjoy eating them.
― mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 23 March 2018 21:31 (six years ago) link
I like steak tartar and i like steak rare and in small quantities.
― Yerac, Friday, 23 March 2018 21:32 (six years ago) link
i love burgers
my preference is rare/bloody meats, but i'll eat them if i know it's from a good quality source, and this is rarely the case
one thing i love about japan is their meats, i'll eat almost raw japanese meats and eggs any time
― F# A# (∞), Friday, 23 March 2018 21:33 (six years ago) link
almost all*

I'm sorry, you said Indian food was junk so your mouth is obviously broken in some way.
― mfktz (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 23 March 2018 21:36 (six years ago) link
i mean doesn't mean i don't eat it or like it
― F# A# (∞), Friday, 23 March 2018 21:37 (six years ago) link
If you cut down on the ghee or oil when making it, it's actually really healthy.

chilean empanadas not fried and have the beef with raisins and hard-boiled egg? because that is definitely classic.
― cthulhu original (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 23 March 2018 21:57 (six years ago) link
a bit annoying to assemble, though, because you have to be careful about the number of raisins and bits of egg that sneak into each one.
― cthulhu original (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 23 March 2018 21:59 (six years ago) link
yeah those are empanadas de pino, i think they're pretty great
― Louis Jägermeister (jim in vancouver), Friday, 23 March 2018 22:00 (six years ago) link
some indian food is like dehydrating vegetables at high heat with a bunch of spices and very little oil/ghee. it can be healthy.
― cthulhu original (Sufjan Grafton), Friday, 23 March 2018 22:01 (six years ago) link
also daal seems to be healthy unless there's tons of ghee in the tadka, but adding butter to soup is the best way to move along the healthy/delicious curve

Salteñas are the best
― F# A# (∞), Friday, 23 March 2018 22:03 (six years ago) link

Chilean empanadas have some serious issues with their dough. I've had a lot of bad empanadas here where the dough is way too dense or there is just too much of it.
― Yerac, Friday, 23 March 2018 22:24 (six years ago) link
I also think the bread here is kind of terrible in general. But there is an Eric Kayser near where I live.
