i was searching jewish magazines for articles about paul heyman (it looks like he's never been profiled which is pretty unusual for jewish press) and found this interview with peter rosenberg (who cohosts cheap heat on grantland) where i learned for the first time that macho man's mom was a member of the tribe???

I could definitely see it happening. There’s more of a Jewish history there than people know. Arguably the greatest performer of all time, “Macho Man” Randy Savage, is half-Jewish. I recently read an article about him and he would get ribbed and joked on for being cheap and people said it came from his mother’s side of family. I was pretty psyched to find out he was Jewish.

You also have one of the most important players in the last decade in [World Wrestling Entertainment manager] Paul Heyman. He’s phenomenal. His character’s never been outright Jewish — there may be times when they play on some stereotypes — but he’s a brilliant mind. Whenever I talk to him, he always makes mention of my being Jewish and me being a good Jewish boy.

heyman is the best

just watched the ECW ep and thought it was great - tons of heyman

I definitely take Mordy's point that this is a great intro newer fans who haven't seen this stuff before, and to that extent I'm sure it's doing its job. But once you've seen a few of their documentaries it really does get tired watching the same shit over and over again. The whole endeavour isn't helped by the fact that in retrospect, so much of what went on in the Attitude Era was fuckin whack.

I just hope that in a year or two once they've drained this particular well they offer some closer looks at some different periods that haven't already been so heavily dissected and analysed.

I'll resubscribe when (if?) they start adding some '70s WWF Capitol Wrestling. Been reading about some of that stuff recently and I'm kinda fascinated with the whole structure of the company in those days, the Three Wise Men of the East vs the babyface champ and so on. I'm developing a small but burgeoning obsession with the Grand Wizard of Wrestling, though I can't quite place why. Some combination of the name, the sensational shades and turban ensemble and the fact that he died right before things took off in a big way and seems therefore to have been forever excised from the collective memory in spite of the fact that he was the top heel in the company for a full decade p. much.

The ending of Ambrose vs Rollins at HIAC got me so pissed off. Usually I don't get worked up over bad finishes but this one was completely inexcusable and made absolutely no sense.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Monday, 27 October 2014 13:02 (eleven years ago)

Mordy, Tuesday, 28 October 2014 00:13 (eleven years ago)

In 2014 John Cena is wearing a KEEP CALM AND NEVER GIVE UP t shirt. I really like John Cena as a wrestler despite how hard he makes it to do so.

a hoy hoy, Friday, 14 November 2014 22:55 (eleven years ago)

WWE sources have confirmed that Dalip Singh Rana, the Great Khali, is no longer with the company.

Khali's contract expired this past week and the company opted not to renew it.

As noted yesterday, this was not a surprise and there had been talk around wrestling for the past week or so that Khali was being let go.

a hoy hoy, Friday, 14 November 2014 22:55 (eleven years ago)

is there anywhere I can watch that episode of NXT? Or at least the Neville - Zayn match?

Merdeyeux, Sunday, 16 November 2014 23:40 (eleven years ago)

smoke 1 for khali

never forget the shockingly very good match he had with cena at judgment day 07

Mordy, Monday, 17 November 2014 16:12 (eleven years ago)

Merdeyeux, Monday, 17 November 2014 20:49 (eleven years ago)

Merdeyeux, Monday, 17 November 2014 20:50 (eleven years ago)

Mordy, Monday, 24 November 2014 04:02 (eleven years ago)

i watched it only coz i happened to be awake, expecting v little from anything but dean v bray. that match was a bit underwhelming, but the main event was shockingly great.

Black Friday came early this year:

http://www.cagesideseats.com/wwe/2014/11/27/7298557/cm-punk-story-walking-out-on-wwe

NoTimeBeforeTime, Thursday, 27 November 2014 11:26 (eleven years ago)

Well that's fucking worth listening to.

Hopefully it causes the wwe to sort out their medic situation because fuuuuck me that sounds horrible and other sports are getting it in the arse about concussions etc. so why not wrestling too?

I'm pretty certain that punk said vince lied to shareholders about him, as well as talking openly about how he had to sue them for withholding payment to an injured and mistreated employee. Wonder what that'll do to the share price, after having to give away one of the big 4 for free this month too.

Ryback is gonna be the biggest heel in the company this Monday.

Also its fascinating to see just how fucking amateur and carny it all still is inside, in 2014, after fucking everything. I guess that only ends with Vince dying but Punk makes it seem like Hunter isn't much better/less carny.

a hoy hoy, Thursday, 27 November 2014 21:08 (eleven years ago)

I listened to it today, the written recaps on all the news sites don't do it justice.

He doesn't sound at all like a guy trying to settle scores and shovel dirt on people, which is the impression I got from reading the recaps.

The most negative thing I can say is about his strange fixation with wrestling in the main event at Mania. It's kind of like saying if you don't win the Nobel Prize in your field then your career was a failure. On one hand he was trying to politic himself into the main event and on the other hand he admits that it was Daniel Bryan's year and that he deserved it.

If anyone still doubts that wrestlers need an offseason, they need to hear this interview.

NoTimeBeforeTime, Saturday, 29 November 2014 18:46 (eleven years ago)

As for Vince and HHH, this confirms pretty much everything we've heard about them in a million different interviews, only more so. Vince always comes across as a father figure who has the respect of the locker room even though the wrestlers know they're getting screwed over. HHH hasn't been one of the boys for over fifteen years and so nobody trusts him, outside of a few close allies. HHH is probably a genius when it comes to storylines and angles, mapping out the matches, and forward thinking stuff like the Performance Center, but he's a disaster with interpersonal relations.

Mordy, Sunday, 7 December 2014 02:48 (eleven years ago)

recently got 100% way too much back into wwe after years of mostly ignoring it and i watched 1 episode of lucha underground and i'm about ready to abandon wwe forever again

would it be weird to have a LU thread in the WWE board/why is it just a WWE board

linda cardellini (zachlyon), Wednesday, 10 December 2014 23:59 (eleven years ago)

Considering there's one active thread and six people in it talk about what you want.

EZ Snappin, Thursday, 11 December 2014 00:03 (eleven years ago)

ok

lucha underground is good!

linda cardellini (zachlyon), Thursday, 11 December 2014 00:19 (eleven years ago)

LU is so good btw, u are most otm

i want to talk about chikara - it was so good. it's really goofy and fun and the crowd is amazing - chanting the entire time, cheering. the best match i saw was the Devastation Corporation tag team vs the Throwbacks for tag team title - the latter lost it to the former but the entire match was really fantastic + exciting, i took a mark pic w/ the Throwbacks after the show and they were like 'you should've gotten a pic with us when we had the titles' :( the storylines are very fun + weird. a lot of bizarre gimmicks. this guy delirious, painted all in green, fought ultra mantis (who was super over w/ the crowd, wearing a praying mantis lucha mask) w/ loser leaves chikara and after the match delirious mind controlled two friends of ultra mantis and the crowd chanted, "fight it! fight it! fight it!" but exhortations didn't help. later in this huge torneo cibernetico match they had like a 7 vs 7 and part of the story involved all these ant luchas on the face team and this one estranged ant heel on the heel team and when FireAnt finally faced off against SoldierAnt at the end of the match the crowd chanted "hug it out" which i thought was really sweet. they obvs didn't hug it out. anyway it was like NXT++ like all the goofy, fun, parts of NXT with a mix of styles. also the first match was a mixed gender match for the chikara young lions cup and heidi lovelace won which was pretty cool and one of the things i really like about LU too with Sexy Star competing against the men. it's a good look.

Mordy, Thursday, 11 December 2014 00:24 (eleven years ago)

oh wait i missed the main event which was their second cage match in history and it was this super heel (big hossy dude wearing all-black contact lenses) who has apparently "killed" chikara athletes and he squared off against this guy icarus who did a lot of cage climbing that was neat. anyway - after icarus defeated him the good guys of chikara who had come out to watch the match and cheer for icarus passed him this giant thor-like hammer and icarus hit the super heel w/ it and dude lied down and didn't move until the entire arena cleared out at the end of the show. he just lied there.

Mordy, Thursday, 11 December 2014 00:26 (eleven years ago)

and i still didn't mention this heel manager, Sidney Bakabella, who is hilarious w/ this super obv fake toupee (that he lost at some point during a scuffle) who just banters ongoingly w/ the crowd throughout the match making these over the top heel manager comments and rubbing his fingers together in the money sign.

Mordy, Thursday, 11 December 2014 00:28 (eleven years ago)

so i guess what i'm saying is i super marked out

Mordy, Thursday, 11 December 2014 00:28 (eleven years ago)

wow @ LU's main event this week

Mordy, Friday, 12 December 2014 05:31 (eleven years ago)
