for the next couple of months my fellow students and i must listen to mix cds. each of us made one - the teacher, too. they are on reserve in the music library and there are about 20 of them. they are anonymous and no track information is available. i will post the track listings (as far as i can figure them out) of these mixes here.

you just write a small response if you want to (during the listening process) on an index card and stick it in the envelope w/the CD. later we have to write a huge report about what kind of insights the project gave us or whatever

xpost would DIE if #2 was his. teacher is a cool/smart guy actually. i know who made #2 because i overheard her mention ben rector once - she knows who he is because she was born in england or something. lol. really hoping hers is the worst.

MIX THREE

1. Some dynamic TV theme-type music for 17 seconds.
2. Beck – “The Golden Age”
3. Neutral Milk Hotel – “Holland, 1945”
4. Death From Above 1979 – “Romantic Rights”
5. Flaming Lips – “Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots Pt. 1”
6. Pedro The Lion – “When They Really Get To Know You They Will Run”
7. Sonic Youth – “Teenage Riot”
8. The Tallest Man on Earth – “The Drying of the Lawns”
9. Symphonic music I’ve heard before but it was in 8bit-ish form – maybe a symphonic version of something from a Zelda?! ...The music from the Kakariko Village, but played by an orchestra!!!
10. Jeff Buckley – “Mojo Pin”
11. Radiohead – “Paranoid Android”
12. White Stripes – “My Doorbell”
13. Thrice – "The Great Exchange"
14. Sara Watkins – “All This Time”
15. Tallest Man on Earth – “King Of Spain”
16. Sufjan Stevens – “Barn Owl, Night Killer”
17. Radiohead – “Pyramid Song”
18. Not sure – maybe a Chopin nocturne?
19. Sounds like synthesized spaghetti western soundtrack music. Not sure.

(Went to class and came back while listening to this one – a guy from class was also checking out CDs and said “oh, don’t give me #3, it’s mine". we talked for a while. A quiet, mousy guy. I am instantly more forgiving of his CD because he is an enthusiastic but quiet gay sweetheart and it would be wrong for him NOT to listen to this kind of stuff probably. 90% the songs are super romantical and about longing for lost love lol)

☠ (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 01:39 (eleven years ago) link

this class is really fun and cool tbh but there's no accounting for the taste on these CDs!! my friend who has a degree in musicology told me that this project was the most fun he ever did in undergrad! maybe his class was different. i'm sure everyone is equally tortured by the project, though. maybe that's part of what he's trying to teach us??? like i think everyone went into this project thinking "wait'll they get a load of ME" but no one actually cares about anyone else's musical taste and just wants to hear responses to their own shit, not listen to anybody else's CD

☠ (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 01:42 (eleven years ago) link

was so excited to hear "teenage riot" start tbh esp after enduring CD two

☠ (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 01:49 (eleven years ago) link

are you supposed to make assumptions about the person based on what they put on their cd? Like is it about self-presentation?

sarahel, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 02:01 (eleven years ago) link

i dont think youre SUPPOSED to make certain assumptions about the person

assumptions will be made and examined imo

☠ (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 02:04 (eleven years ago) link

oh sorry you didnt say "certain"

☠ (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 02:05 (eleven years ago) link

i mean, isn't that kinda the function of the mix cd though? to use a collection of songs to "say something" about yourself to the other person, assuming it's a cd you're making for another person. i totally think you should make assumptions about the people.

sarahel, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 02:07 (eleven years ago) link

is the point of the class for one person to romance the whole class

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 02:07 (eleven years ago) link

or is it more like speed dating

ice cr?m, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 02:08 (eleven years ago) link

like i think i'd make up stories about the people and those would be my responses.

sarahel, Wednesday, 23 February 2011 02:08 (eleven years ago) link

one person romancing = mix 3 guy iirc, he is obv trying to!

yes, to sarahel but the mixes are anonymous so its odd
and i dont think we're really supposed to try to figure out what the stuff is (titles, artists) - i just did that. oopz

xpost again: once i figured out mix 3 guy was who he was my idea about the person was totally BLOWN - i totally thought i had the person's number and i was way off. the only mildly interesting thing so far in this project so far was meeting that guy while listening to his CD and having my perception of it completely shift.

☠ (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 23 February 2011 02:12 (eleven years ago) link

Concubine Tree (Trayce), Wednesday, 6 April 2011 01:15 (eleven years ago) link

think that one is the worst of all since it makes so plain how insipid the person who made it is — the other bad mixes are just made by people who don't really care much about music.

MIX TWENTY

Mix is one 9 minute track of compiled song snippets in a cut-up style.

“Because you are a woman” - Ave Maria – “This woman’s work” – a piece of a song about being sung lullabies, mothering – a piece of a song about sacrificing and giving up yourself for love – pieces of Tori Amos’s “Silent All These Years” – “What gave you the right to tell me who I should be” – “realize I can be all these things you project on me because I’m beautiful to me” – “When she dances she goes and goes” – “I want my money back!!!” – “Cause I’m a woman, phenomenally” – “I’m not the average girl from your video…because I am a queen” – skipping on “something’s gotta change” from previous song and “sing a haunting refrain” from another song – “Cause I’m a woman, phenomenally…phenomenal woman, that’s you…and you…and me.” – “This woman’s work” over and over – Ave Maria – “Will the circle be unbroken” by a group of women’s voices and someone yelling “Quiet!”, then the song finishes out the mix.

I'm bumping this thread because I remembered it and this whole stupid class and experience while thinking about Ethan, who made this mix. Taking this class together put us on each other's radar. Later, his band started playing shows at my house, and "tall grindcore guy" turned into "Ethan." He moved to DC a few years ago——we'd always run into him at Deathfest, and crash with him when we played in town or went to a show up there. I found out a few days ago that he was very sick with an aggressive brain tumor; before anyone could process even that news, he died. He was honestly SO like this mix: hilarious and surprising. A relentlessly uplifting and interesting person to be around. So missed.
