i just read a thing about how women overapologize
― carpathian florist (roxymuzak), Sunday, 28 June 2009 12:55 (fourteen years ago) link
oh yeah i know about that. i try to watch out for it. same with "i'm probably wrong but..." and that kind of 'hedging' talk like when people ask questions in a class or something.
sometimes boys overapologize too though. i don't like it.
― harbl, Sunday, 28 June 2009 12:58 (fourteen years ago) link
yes it can be annoying in everyone

i don't feel like the proper amount of reverence is being shown for clueless but it is okay for women to have different opinions than each other, i suppose.
the overapologizing thing is a thing. i hate it and do it.
― horseshoe, Sunday, 28 June 2009 16:22 (fourteen years ago) link
i do it too. i'm sorry. please don't hate me!

I just housed the biggest blueberry pancake I've ever seen. Waited nearly 40 mins. for a table and another 30 for the food so by the time it got to me I was STARVING. So good but I think I'm going to vomit and then die now.

I have been thinking about this all morning because it is and I do it a lot but don't know why. I do it mainly when I'm unsure if a person is upset or angry with me esp if someone is being uncommunicative. I guess I do it a lot in general too. I don't know. I wish I knew why I do this or how to stop because even I know it's annoying.

sometimes when i do it i think it is kind of a game where i'm trying to see if the person i'm apologizing to is going to dismiss me or see through the apology and credit whatever it is i'm apologizing for? (if that makes no sense, this happened a lot in graduate school when i was making a comment in class/at a lecture/in a workshop.) this is a pretty self-defeating and fucked up game, needless to say. there's some weird kind of vindication when people do dismiss you, though. lol i sound like a crazy person.
― horseshoe, Sunday, 28 June 2009 20:57 (fourteen years ago) link
Sorry, I don't think I really do this too much.

also impostor syndrome, where you feel like everything you've done is like a joke because everyone else has been working hard and you're just pretending to be smart, and people will find out any minute
― harbl, Sunday, 28 June 2009 21:06 (fourteen years ago) link
I just always felt smarter/superior bc I didn't have to work as hard lol.
― tehresa, Sunday, 28 June 2009 21:08 (fourteen years ago) link
yeah i think that is probably related! also, harbl you seem v accomplished, especially for someone who is five years old!

i kind of have swings of this sometimes, it goes back and forth but i think they reinforce each other
― harbl, Sunday, 28 June 2009 21:10 (fourteen years ago) link
like when people say "aren't you gonna study" and i'm thinking fuck that who cares and then i do fine and i subsequently feel like an impostor
― harbl, Sunday, 28 June 2009 21:11 (fourteen years ago) link
yeah, i think the apologizing thing, at least when i do it, is a mix of superiority and insecurity. the superiority comes from secretly knowing that you're not as dumb/insecure as you've made yourself sound by apologizing.
girls only thread causing me to overshare.
― horseshoe, Sunday, 28 June 2009 21:12 (fourteen years ago) link
I never really feel impostory but sometimes I would get pissed off if someone I thought was dumb or had stupid ideas/projects got a better grade than I did even if they put more time into it which I guess is silly but maybe not because more time spent on a project does not necessarily mean better quality but whatever that's life I guess.Xpost
― tehresa, Sunday, 28 June 2009 21:16 (fourteen years ago) link
people i think are dumb often get better grades than me but that's what happens when you think everyone is dumb

yes! otis spofford was the redhead who lived in the shitty apartments, the "working class" one. he was probably my favorite though i loved them all. he loved ellen tebbits and so did i
the one i had was all blue + purple and the "girl" on the front barely looks human? spooky.
xpost oh ellen tebbits! loved her! some cleary books i loved, but some have not stuck with me.

when I was in 4th grade my favorite books were Harriet the Spy and The Spy's Guidebook ... I figured that utilizing the professional techniques described in the latter book that I wouldn't get caught like Harriet did. In actuality, no one really paid any attention whatsoever.
