"there's no wrong opinion" = something idiots say to justify saying something idiotic

Noodle Vague, Wednesday, 20 February 2008 23:38 (eighteen years ago)

could the US navy use one of its satellite-killing missiles to take out the primaries thread? just a thought.

People are hating this movie for the rong reasons. They're getting worked up about the "issue" of abortion, when the movie isn't a morality tale or an after-school special. It's a comedy about a singular person in an individual situation. Then they're mad because of all the "indie signifiers", because they are still under the delusion that they somehow possess the magic key to jaded enlightenment and non-mainstream culture, as if these music / artists / or ideals will never cross over. Like, "Hey, other assholes are listening to MY MUSIC, and to add insult to injury, they're thriftshopping too!" Get over it. I don't hear clear arguements against the script, performances, production, etc.

And so, I ask again, what exactly is the bar for Teen Dramedy if not Juno?

In its mass-market designs, it represents the oversaturation of a particular "indie" aesthetic that had started to grow stale by the end of the 1990s but somehow took on a new place by being subsumed into the mainstream in the early-to-mid 2000s with Seth Cohen wearing ringer tees on The O.C. and Modest Mouse in car commercials and such.

fair trade thread is getting pretty fuckin' intensely challenging.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 17:07 (eighteen years ago)

It's a little snotty to make "duh" comments that imply that an understanding of the Bretton Woods system is part of the obvious baseline of any casual discussion of trade among non-econ people.

Hurting 2, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 22:17 (eighteen years ago)

Duh.

Bretton Woods was a cashcow for the west really

maybe we need a "breaking news" thread for "western states will use every weapon in their armoury to their advantage whatever the consequences"-type challenging opinions.

no that's what i meant, hurting! dude was making like "Bretton Woods was a cashcow" was this kind of QED statement.

i have no idea what the fuck that even means -- like prior to BW the western powers had no sway in (what became the) third world, or that after BW broke down it hasn't.

my line applied to pretty much everything posted on that thread, but the bretton woods bit annoyed me because it was just so CHALLENGING.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 22:51 (eighteen years ago)

it hasn't --> they haven't.

That one guy that hit it and quit it, Tuesday, 26 February 2008 22:52 (eighteen years ago)

ah ok, I see what you're saying. So maybe I also misunderstand this thread, b/c I'm thinking "challenging opinions" means arrogant assertions of things that are obvious, but maybe it's more just arrogant assertions period.

The actors weren't exactly playing very differently from the original. I get half way through a JD song and I'm already bored. They really do sound like a band having a jam together.

I'm not afraid to state loud and clear: this skit was not, is not, nor will ever be funny. Theres nothing funny about it, nor is there about Christopher Walken, Saturday Night Live, Will Ferrel, jokes referencing this skit, nor is there anything that resembles humour in the premises, foundation, and details (on a grand and microscopic scale) within, or around this skit.
