i had some Talenti eggnog ice cream last night. it's better than any other form of nog, but not as good as ice cream that does not taste like nog.

festival culture (Jordan), Tuesday, 25 November 2014 17:06 (nine years ago) link

charles mingus's eggnog recipe calls for ice cream IN the nog to keep it cold

jello my future biafriend (roxymuzak), Tuesday, 25 November 2014 20:51 (nine years ago) link

i love that there's a charles mingus nog recipe!

Benson and the Jets (ENBB), Wednesday, 26 November 2014 12:59 (nine years ago) link

wow!
“Mingus’s holiday eggnog was a concoction so delicious and mind-blowing, you would do anything to make sure that you saw him at Christmas. Over the phone once, he gave me the recipe.”
— Janet Coleman

THE REAL THING

* Separate one egg for one person. Each person gets an egg.
* Two sugars for each egg, each person.
* One shot of rum, one shot of brandy per person.
* Put all the yolks into one big pan, with some milk.
* That’s where the 151 proof rum goes. Put it in gradually or it’ll burn the eggs,
* OK. The whites are separate and the cream is separate.
* In another pot– depending on how many people– put in one shot of each, rum and brandy. (This is after you whip your whites and your cream.)
* Pour it over the top of the milk and yolks.
* One teaspoon of sugar. Brandy and rum.
* Actually you mix it all together.
* Yes, a lot of nutmeg. Fresh nutmeg. And stir it up.
* You don’t need ice cream unless you’ve got people coming and you need to keep it cold. Vanilla ice cream. You can use eggnog. I use vanilla ice cream.
* Right, taste for flavor. Bourbon? I use Jamaica Rum in there. Jamaican Rums. Or I’ll put rye in it. Scotch. It depends.
See, it depends on how drunk I get while I’m tasting it.

DON'T ORDER THIS...NOT IN A CAN...NOT THE PRODUCT YOU THINK IT IS!!!
By April on January 7, 2014
Verified Purchase
I can honestly say I have never been so "all-around" disappointed and angry about:
1. an Amazon experience
2. an Amazon seller
3. a manufacturer

If, when you saw this product, you thought "wow, I finally found that Borden Eggnog in a can that I love so much", well I'm afraid, if you order it, you too will be disappointed and angry.
I thought the same thing - ESPECIALLY UPON READING THE DESCRIPTION and SEEING THE PICTURE - but this is NOT THAT PRODUCT!!!
Let me state it again: If you think you have found the "old" Borden Eggnog in a can you are WRONG. THIS IS NOT THAT EGGNOG! It is NOT the same product just in different packaging, as the manufacturer and the seller contend.

No matter WHAT "they" say this is NOT the same in any way...other than it is a yellow, sort-of liquid product that tastes like it's trying to be eggnog. LOL!

I am a professional chef and over the years have used the canned eggnog in recipes as well as just to drink for myself & family. This product does NOT behave the same way in those recipes and does NOT taste, look or mouth-feel the same, not by a long-shot!!!
I have in the past also used the original CAN Eggnog to make Eggnog Latte specialty coffee drinks and it worked brilliantly - frothy, thick & creamy. THIS product from the BOX just gets hot. Never froths, never thickens. Nothing. YUCK!

You WILL receive a "pack of 3" and the packs are 32 oz., so by volume you will "get what you paid for" but the semi-liquid product that exits the BOX is GRAINY & "GLOOPY" and doesn't taste or feel in the mouth (or down the throat if you can force it that far) like the original Borden product.

I complained to the SELLER about the product not being AS PICTURED OR DESCRIBED. They ("green and natural") were VERY nice and "helpful" in that they wanted to make me happy but they have NOT changed the picture nor the description as I strongly suggested. I even mentioned that I wondered if it was ON PURPOSE that they were MISLEADING THE CONSUMER. Now I am SURE that is the case since the picture and description are STILL as they were when I was mislead...but you judge for yourself.
Here is their response (direct quote - nothing corrected or altered by me):

"Dear customer,

The manufacturer changed its presentation, from january this year, it iis the same quantity and flavor as the canned eggnog. Maybe somebody changed the picture of the product, but it is the same product.

If you are not satisfied with your order, you may return the items, unopened and when we receive the products in perfect conditions we will make you a full refund of your order.

Or we can make you a 50% discount of what you have paid for this order, and you may keep the products.

We will be looking forward to your comments. Perhaps we loose money in this transaction, but for us the most important it's the satisfaction of our customers."

"Dear Customer
we appreciate your feedback, we will make the changes suggested by you,"

I received this on/around the 19 of December, 2013...I am posting this comment on January 7, 2014 and the CAN is still pictured and the description still says "32 OZ can".

I will post my own pictures in an effort to dissuade anyone else from wasting their time & money on this awful product. You MIGHT be able to find them on the "detail" page, RIGHT SIDE. Amazon has made ALL customer uploaded images difficult to find but PLEASE TRY!!!

Just to finish off my already too-long comments...I will say that I have mixed this eggnog up to about 25% with CANNED, EVAPORATED milk + about 10% whole milk and, with a good shaking, it comes a little closer to the original. The flavor is then diluted but can be enhanced with a little rum (rum extract if you prefer) and some ground nutmeg. This mixture is at least palatable and has kept me from pouring what I received straight from the box down the toilet...I mean drain... ;-)
