On one hand it's sort of trippy and awesome but on the other, weird and inhuman and dangerous and off-putting...the all-seeing eyeball, really? I can't make out all the type but I did see something about only 30% of women having orgasms during "marital roles" lol.

i like the eyeball

mambo jumbo (La Lechera), Sunday, 26 January 2014 19:22 (twelve years ago)

eyeball reminds me of odilon redon, i love it

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 26 January 2014 19:35 (twelve years ago)

eyeball makes me think more of that inner full-on consciousness that I feel with an orgasm
but ymmv obv, interpretations subjective etc

Kinda Odilon meets The Residents. The best kind of surreal.

Whatup in grilz thread news for me: My therapist was like 'lol are you serious' when I told her nothing gets my goat more than when my boyfriend says during an argument that I am 'being irrational,' because it's not only untrue but also sexist. I was like 'don't you know the history behind men being rational and women being emotional and blah blah blah' and she was like, 'ok...everyone has their thing.'

I had kind of a stress mental breakdown a few months ago and he sometimes calls it 'the period of time where you were really irrational' and I ask him not to say that.

feelings!!!

even the beatles had a coinstar machine in their living room (Crabbits), Sunday, 26 January 2014 20:03 (twelve years ago)

Trying to figure out if I even like this therapist, if she's even helpful, or if she's just a person I can feel guiltless complaining to about work and my failed marriage of quite a while ago

even the beatles had a coinstar machine in their living room (Crabbits), Sunday, 26 January 2014 20:06 (twelve years ago)

that said it was like a funny moment between us, or maybe a real moment, because it was the first time anything I said provoked a reaction other than pity-empathy

even the beatles had a coinstar machine in their living room (Crabbits), Sunday, 26 January 2014 20:06 (twelve years ago)

I would not continue to see that therapist but ~ 60% of my issues stem from shit like men calling me irrational for having feelings they find disagreeable or inconvenient so ymmv.

carl agatha, Sunday, 26 January 2014 20:18 (twelve years ago)

I think those real-person moments that the human being pops out from behind the therapist empathy mask are actually the ones that I end up basing my "is this therapist gonna work?" feeling on.

That said, it would irritate the shit out of me if I'd specifically asked my partner not to use a word/trope that bothered me, and they carried on using it, regardless of what the word was, but moreso if it was that one.

I'd rather be the swallow than a dick (Branwell Bell), Sunday, 26 January 2014 20:18 (twelve years ago)

personally i'm not paying a therapist to judge what pisses me off, that would make me even more irate, quite rationally so

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 26 January 2014 20:26 (twelve years ago)

i feel like carl does, that i would not want to see that therapist anymore. it's possible i value ideological commitments too highly in a therapist, but i am honestly a little confused by a woman who does not understand irritation at being called irrational by men. does she hail from some other, better planet? what happened?

horseshoe, Sunday, 26 January 2014 20:30 (twelve years ago)

ok, it was starting to make me feel...."irrational"! I think I am going to ask around for different names of therapist.

even the beatles had a coinstar machine in their living room (Crabbits), Sunday, 26 January 2014 20:31 (twelve years ago)

What is even a good way to do that other than luck of the draw??
Open up a phone call with 'do you think it is sexist to call women 'hysterical'? well, what about 'irrational'?'

even the beatles had a coinstar machine in their living room (Crabbits), Sunday, 26 January 2014 20:33 (twelve years ago)

haha we should draft an "are you feminist enough" therapist questionnaire

horseshoe, Sunday, 26 January 2014 20:35 (twelve years ago)

i think both of those are good ideas!

mambo jumbo (La Lechera), Sunday, 26 January 2014 20:37 (twelve years ago)

when i lived in Buffalo i started therapy and just happened to start seeing a therapist who specialized in treating young women who were rape and incest survivors. that wasn't the reason for my therapy, and i think i was older than the majority of her clients, but she was the best. i don't know that the word "feminist" was ever uttered in any of our sessions, but she tended to approach the world in a way i recognized/vibed to.

horseshoe, Sunday, 26 January 2014 20:42 (twelve years ago)

I literally googled "feminist" and "therapist" and "London" and came up aces.

Not even kidding, that would be a really worthwhile project and a great resource.

happy women's day! all my international coworkers wished me a happy women's day before we left yesterday.

also i meant to tell this thread that yesterday my doc told me i am experiencing ~mittelschmerz~ (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mittelschmerz)

we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Saturday, 8 March 2014 17:39 (twelve years ago)

Shitty! But at least it has a terrific name?

lord of the files (Crabbits), Saturday, 8 March 2014 17:41 (twelve years ago)

that was my reaction! i texted my mom because i always used to complain about weltschmerz when i was a complainy teen (after i learned what it meant) also i thought i had a cyst or appendicitis or something but it turns out i just have very sensitive ovaries. lol?!

we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Saturday, 8 March 2014 17:43 (twelve years ago)

Yeah, I'm sorry, that sounds really shitty and painful, but on the other hand, what a great name!

claim you hate me; read my twitter account ~religiously~ (Branwell Bell), Saturday, 8 March 2014 17:44 (twelve years ago)

it's not that shitty or really that painful! i'm just glad it wasn't anything major. it made me feel like i'm just overly aware of what's going on, and it's just like yoni power hour, comparatively speaking.

we slowly invented brains (La Lechera), Saturday, 8 March 2014 17:48 (twelve years ago)

"yoni power hour" is a choice phrase
mittelschmerz makes your ovaries sound so existential

tobi vail interviews meredith graves, good interview! liked this q/a in particular

It’s always weird. It’s not something I ever really get used to, sort of putting yourself out there [as a feminist], and then watching it get filtered through the [male-dominated] media. It’s completely bizarre. And I think you’re right — it does have to do with society’s ideas about women’s roles — how you are reflected can become very mutated according to sexist bias [in the media].

It’s true, and I would like to think I can just go off and swear and curse misogyny and do all the things I want to do, but I’d also like to be a little better spoken. If you get a microphone for five minutes of your entire life, you should do something productive with it, and me sitting there going, “fuck all men, fuck this, fuck that, misandry tra-la-la,” because I get riled up when I get asked leading questions… I feel like I just need to be in a little better control of myself.

Orson Wellies (in orbit), Sunday, 23 March 2014 16:56 (twelve years ago)

Dear Meredith, please come post on my image bands thread:

I was re-reading Roland Barthes yesterday, who is one of my favorite authors. I was revisiting his theories on dress. I’ve been lambasted recently because I wrote a piece for ELLE magazine. I did it because I thought it sounded fun. Apparently, that’s not very punk. To which I say, “Fuck it, Roland Barthes wrote for ELLE magazine.” He wrote an early semiotics study differentiating between langue and parole — which is the difference between language as an entity, or that exists independently of people, or “langue,” and “parole,” which is the way in which it is executed by the individual. The way Barthes applies this to fashion is that there is dress — which is all the clothes in the world and everything we can do with them — and dressing, which is for the individual. To me, fashion and style can be separated in the same way. Fashion is dress and style is dressing. There’s sort of a lexicographical difference there. According to Barthes, dress is what needs to be studied, and dressing is less important, because that comes down to the individual and it can’t really be studied unless it’s done on a case-by-case basis.
