well i guess with our old friend "false consciousness" neither of you could be conscious of where the strain is arising from.

xp yes, like that

also, y'know, "benevolent sexism"

Also I want to like this new superhero tv show Arrow but the main female character's name is the same as mine and her tv show dad keep being controlling and patronizing to her and using her name to give her lectures about how he's going to make decisions for her and it's really bothering me.

Ahhhhh you love it!! A superhero with your name! Condescending parents! :)

sweat pea (La Lechera), Tuesday, 22 October 2013 23:40 (ten years ago) link

She's not the superhero, UNFORTUNATELY, but she is a do-gooder public interest lawyer.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Tuesday, 22 October 2013 23:44 (ten years ago) link

I was thinking recently about how much i hate that old canard "if it was men who got pregnant, there'd be [fantastical image of kindness to pregnant people]" - if it was men who got pregnant* then the social effects of pregnancy and childcare historically removing your gender from other social/economic activity would apply to them! even the men who did not get pregnant would be thought of in the terms of being from the fecund gender! this is not helpful!

* i'm not talking about, e.g. trans men, who are a different case, because of how intersecting social and economic pressures affect them specifically.

xposts some of my comics-favouring friends on twitter are v irate about how marvel's not planning to do a female superhero film for at least three years. where are the female superheroes ;_;

Oh :-/

I'm not really into superheroes of either gender but I was happy for you for a sec there!!

sweat pea (La Lechera), Tuesday, 22 October 2013 23:50 (ten years ago) link

(Sorry on phone, that was re tv show)

sweat pea (La Lechera), Tuesday, 22 October 2013 23:50 (ten years ago) link

Haha it's okay! Public interest lawyers are like irl superheroes basically so although she doesn't get the good parts of the story, there are more positive interpretations. Also tbh the hero character's approach to being a superhero is demonstrably flawed from the first ep = ain't nothing to be jealous of there.

So, in comparison to my (no BC) short, painful, rather aggressive periods of 3-5 days each month, this month it has so far gone on 8 days, no pain, no sign of easing up, less ... er, flow, but steady. 8 days is WAY outside my usual bodyclock. Should I worry? Sometimes I think I might be perimenopausal but the GP always poohpoohs me when I bring it up even tho my mum's started in her mid 40s.

...sorry for the random interjection heh.

"If men got pregnant, you'd be able to get abortions out of vending machines" <-- this kind of thing, yeah. I can understanding getting fed up with it!

Much like "tipping" and "restaurants in NYC," nutrition talk can take over ANY THREAD. ANY THREAD I TELLS YOU.

What would happen if we had thread about tipping at a health food restaurant in NYC? Let's never do that.

my sister just brought me the world's largest candy bar, though. i demanded a chocolate rendering of the marble arch but she did her best

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Thursday, 24 October 2013 04:26 (ten years ago) link

I better bloody not be pregnant.

taxi tomato or bag tomato (Trayce), Thursday, 24 October 2013 04:28 (ten years ago) link

trayce, you should see a doctor imo. if it's twice as long as your normal period, that would say that something's up. even if it turns out to be nothing, better to find out now than let it go on and have it be something ungood

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 24 October 2013 05:40 (ten years ago) link

Yar. I will tomorrow if things are still happening. I had a papsmear v recently tho and all was well so im not freaking out.

taxi tomato or bag tomato (Trayce), Thursday, 24 October 2013 05:41 (ten years ago) link

you could have been pregnant and just had a miscarriage :/ Or... it could just be nothing.

my awful periods have finally started to lighten up (note: they're still terrible, just less terrible) thanks to that hysteroscopy and polypectomy I had! YAYYYY

homosexual II, Thursday, 24 October 2013 18:07 (ten years ago) link

My doctor is telling me ANY hormonal birth control method is totally not okay for me. She suggested the Paraguard.

Anyone had that here? Doesn't it make your periods crazy heavy? Argh, mine are already heavy enough...

homosexual II, Thursday, 24 October 2013 18:08 (ten years ago) link

I loooooove it but yeah it made my periods heavier. Or...this might be a weird way to describe it but it made them wetter?? Like I felt the blood was thinner and soaked through more stuff (whereas I guess before it was...thicker but there was less of it?)

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Thursday, 24 October 2013 19:00 (ten years ago) link

It has leveled out now, probably took almost a year though. And I'm still a little bit heavier than I was pre-IUD--but not the magic gushers of the first while.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Thursday, 24 October 2013 19:00 (ten years ago) link

Because if anyone knows where to find that rainbow magic unicorn gushing period wave img, that's basically what it was like minus the rainbows, magic, and unicorns.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Thursday, 24 October 2013 19:04 (ten years ago) link

That's not what I was thinking of but it'll do.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Thursday, 24 October 2013 19:14 (ten years ago) link

Oh yeah that one.

carl agatha, Thursday, 24 October 2013 19:19 (ten years ago) link

i like the one from the overlook better

sweat pea (La Lechera), Thursday, 24 October 2013 19:33 (ten years ago) link
