I'm just going to link to this one, after seeing how small the previous img is. http://www.ihollaback.org/resources/street-harassment-etiquette/

I love that Toast comic so much.

Ergh my grammar was all over the place there but you get the idea.

haha yes I know exactly what you're saying. The universal language of Fedora Guys.

I don't even know what Pretty Pretty Princess is, fyi.

It's one of those "Huh, I am getting pretty old..." things where the kids I follow on Twitter reference cultural touchstones that I've never even heard of.

carl agatha, Tuesday, 27 August 2013 23:24 (ten years ago) link

Actually I didn't know who Lisa Frank was until I looked her up a few months ago because somebody kept referencing her on a blog I read.

carl agatha, Tuesday, 27 August 2013 23:25 (ten years ago) link

was it the 'lisa frankfurt school' tumblr because that is the best thing (i don't really know what lisa frank is either, but i think that's a nationality and not an age thing)

Yeah I only know who she is now cos of ILX haha.

It is like ganging up on Enya (Trayce), Tuesday, 27 August 2013 23:30 (ten years ago) link

No, it was some person's individual fashion blog. I actually get annoyed at the blog a lot because this person dresses like she's 13 and is in her 30s (and takes a lot of her style cues from Lisa Frank art), but she has a really good weekly link roundup that is worth sticking around for and I am trying to be less judgmental about adult women who want to dress like Rainbow Brite.

carl agatha, Tuesday, 27 August 2013 23:46 (ten years ago) link

my dream is that there would be a thread/forum on the internet exactly like ilx's rolling metal thread, with one difference: women post on it.

Lisa Frank lives in Tucson – I was talking to someone yesterday who grew up here & spent her childhood thinking Lisa Frank was just a Tucson phenomenon. "She taught me that you can paint without using any black," she said. I had spent the previous night looking at a Goya book and thought – no black, how awful! I know they're not even at all the same kind of art. I didn't even like Lisa Frank as a little girl; I was just the right age that eventually SOMEONE gave you a bunch of Lisa Frank swag, and you had to put all those goddamn stickers on SOMETHING.

What's going on re: this thread? "My feminist whatever" stuff just makes me so sad, mad, etc., I quit even thinking about it, or reading, even though it is very important to me. But it still comes up like some Whac-A-Mole game. I had a dangerous near-miss with a strange man recently, and I don't really want to discuss it, but it made me so mad, like apoplectic, "this would not happen to a guy." I feel like the police can't/won't help you on this stuff. I got it all out by cleaning my house VERY QUICKLY; it made me feel Mormon. Everything loops back on itself.

It's hard when you are too aware of how profound the rifts in the world are. You can't fix them but you can make them recede a little, all that dancing over the abyss stuff.

Tottenham Heelspur (in orbit), Sunday, 8 September 2013 21:10 (ten years ago) link

But man, the micro-aggressions will really get you.

more <3 to you from me too, Crabbits

It's hard when you are too aware of how profound the rifts in the world are

yes!! and this (plus my one good but occasional lunch companion at work) = the only place I can find anyone else who even seems to SEE them and not go "nobody else has ever mentioned noticing any of these so-called rifts, you are just whining, did you ever stop to think how whining makes YOU the rift" etc forever and boy does it drive me mad. but, dance, recede, that is a thing to work on I guess.

let's talk about how great the dirty dancing soundtrack is.

omg I have been listening to "hungry eyes" like 10x in a row for like five days straight.

homosexual II, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 19:47 (ten years ago) link

my sister and i were talking about how when we were little we thought all the songs on that were from the same era, somehow

ha i had it as a kid and dragged my mom and my friend and her mom to the dirty dancing TOUR that summer
i'm neither proud nor ashamed of this, it just was something that happened

it would be hard to choose between la bamba sdtk and dirty dancing sdtk

I haaaaaaaaaaaaaated Dirty Dancing when it first came out. My best friend made me watch it with her like ten times and every time was like torture. This makes me want to reconsider, however:

http://www.xojane.com/entertainment/dirty-dancing-is-a-subversive-masterpiece-and-here-are-four-reasons-why

It's entirely possible I hated the movie due to being a curmudgeonly, contrary child and not on the actual merits.

carl agatha, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:14 (ten years ago) link

who wouldn't want to crawl around on the floor with and/or do the lift with and/or invade the dance space of patrick swayze?! he was such a hunk.

no fomo (La Lechera), Wednesday, 11 September 2013 20:22 (ten years ago) link

I only have seen Dirty Dancing a few times, and I haven't seen it as an adult, EVER.

homosexual II, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 21:03 (ten years ago) link

Saw it a few months ago and it still catapults me back to being in high school again, feelings and all. My best friend and I skipped out of school for an entire day just so we could watch the film over and over. That was the secret soundtrack of my 20's.

Watched La Bamba a few months ago as well and yeah, brother Bob...totally! how did I miss that as a teen? Ha!

*tera, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 22:44 (ten years ago) link

Oh, and I completely blame that cassette for having a huge influence on guys I dated and slept with because I thought they sort of looked like Patrick Swayze. I'd always have it playing while getting ready to go out.

*tera, Wednesday, 11 September 2013 22:47 (ten years ago) link

the sister's talent show rehearsal is worth the entire movie imo

A movie starring Jerry Orbach and Kelly Bishop set in the Catskills in the 60s sounds like something I would looooooove but I never was a Dirty Dancing fan.

did yall hear that the topless feminist group we discussed WAYYYY upthread turned out to be run by a dude?

no boys allowed in the room!!!!

i got my thyroid checked today thanks to this thread and the advice of homoII and others. i'm waiting on my labs to come back. i'm concerned though because after hearing about all my symptoms the doctor was like "is there a history of lupus in your family?"

:/

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 17:04 (ten years ago) link

that link is to where we talked about the FEMEN group, sorry if that was unclear

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 18 September 2013 17:05 (ten years ago) link

They thought my grandmother had lupus too but it turned out to be thyroid.

I went to get a well woman check finally after all the talk about periods. Mine have been weird this year. Since I was 2,5 until I got pregnant, I was an always reliable 28 days. Post pregnancy...got my period four weeks after delivery despite breastfeeding. My periods then went from 28 to 36 days and have been on a steady decline, now at 27 days. My big question for my gyn was if pregnancy made me pre-menopausal if not menopausal.

*tera, Thursday, 19 September 2013 05:56 (ten years ago) link

What did the doc say?

My periods had been on a steady decline prior to getting pregnant (at 40, like you iirc) so I'm wondering what I'm in for.

carl agatha, Thursday, 19 September 2013 12:17 (ten years ago) link

since I've been on thyroid meds and eating an autoimmune diet, my hair shedding has drastically reduced to like... normalish. For my entire adulthood I've always lost GOBS of hair a day, sometimes it gets up to frightening levels. So this is really a relief.

homosexual II, Thursday, 19 September 2013 14:51 (ten years ago) link

yeah i've been essentially balding for like 3 years, so im really looking forward to quelling that if possible

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Thursday, 19 September 2013 15:25 (ten years ago) link

also, this doc told me that they were going to email my results?! i find that really weird. they had me sign a thing saying that it was ok to do so. is that normal? tbh i haven't seen a GP since the dawn of the information age

1 P.3. Eternal (roxymuzak), Thursday, 19 September 2013 15:26 (ten years ago) link

The practice where my OB is has some kind of secure hospital-specific email communication system. I get lab results that way, but they also call and tell me if something is abnormal since they are really just sending me raw data. My doc sent me a message last week that I replied to and she was so happy to know that the whole thing actually worked. She said I was the only person who had ever replied to any messages.
