What IS emo ? Are Sebadoh, Superchunk emo? If so, emo is a synonym for crap, isn't it? -- Dr. C, Wednesday, 13 June 2001 00:00 (6 years ago) Bookmark Link

"emo is a synonym for crap" isn't really a "challenging" opinion though, is it? Like, if you went on that assumption, would you be missing out on awesome music? I doubt it.
Someone should start a rolling "ILXors whom Dom has beef with/grudge against" thread for lulz.
― Pashmina, Wednesday, 13 February 2008 12:07 (eighteen years ago)
Hmmmm - I don't care about Dr. C calling emo crap but he's very very RONG with the implication that Sebadoh and Superchunk were either emo or crap.

i thought "challenging opinions" was not actually a place for challenging opinions to be listed, but a place for things to be listed that the poster themself falsely believes to be a challenging opinion

He's so pretentious. It's amazing how, even though I don't really care to keep up with his career, every time I see him he manages to do something incredibly arrogant and self-indulgent that shocks me. That Grammy speech where he acts incredibly rude and conceited (the recent 2008 version) is another example of this. Telling the band to stop playing the music because he wants to go over the allotted time restriction and talk about his mother is a another example. If he hadn't started out his speech talking about how he "owned" the Grammy's and made the awards show his new home he'd have enough time to talk about how his mom is proud of him in heaven when she watches rap videos of her son, but he didn't think it through. I think there is an environmental cause eg a toxin that causes depressive thoughts. Plenty of places have deprivation and associated social problems and unemployment. Nearly everyone can access the internet. So they should be looking for a environmental cause specific to this area. Why is nobody doing this?

People are hating this movie for the rong reasons. They're getting worked up about the "issue" of abortion, when the movie isn't a morality tale or an after-school special. It's a comedy about a singular person in an individual situation. Then they're mad because of all the "indie signifiers", because they are still under the delusion that they somehow possess the magic key to jaded enlightenment and non-mainstream culture, as if these music / artists / or ideals will never cross over. Like, "Hey, other assholes are listening to MY MUSIC, and to add insult to injury, they're thriftshopping too!" Get over it. I don't hear clear arguements against the script, performances, production, etc.
And so, I ask again, what exactly is the bar for Teen Dramedy if not Juno?

In its mass-market designs, it represents the oversaturation of a particular "indie" aesthetic that had started to grow stale by the end of the 1990s but somehow took on a new place by being subsumed into the mainstream in the early-to-mid 2000s with Seth Cohen wearing ringer tees on The O.C. and Modest Mouse in car commercials and such.

It's a little snotty to make "duh" comments that imply that an understanding of the Bretton Woods system is part of the obvious baseline of any casual discussion of trade among non-econ people.

no that's what i meant, hurting! dude was making like "Bretton Woods was a cashcow" was this kind of QED statement.
i have no idea what the fuck that even means -- like prior to BW the western powers had no sway in (what became the) third world, or that after BW broke down it hasn't.
my line applied to pretty much everything posted on that thread, but the bretton woods bit annoyed me because it was just so CHALLENGING.

I'm not afraid to state loud and clear: this skit was not, is not, nor will ever be funny. Theres nothing funny about it, nor is there about Christopher Walken, Saturday Night Live, Will Ferrel, jokes referencing this skit, nor is there anything that resembles humour in the premises, foundation, and details (on a grand and microscopic scale) within, or around this skit.
