This Australian tonal usage is now pervasive throughout Irish sport, btw, presumably through the influence of your rugby coaches.

Incidentally there's a rough equivalent with English working class football people, where they'll suddenly say, "but no" and follow it with something serious, as if switching from a BANTER mode that often wasn't actually present.
