rewatching freaks and geeks

god

that first episode first glimpse of franco under the bleachers talking about being kicked out of church for wearing a molly hatchet shirt should legitimately be illegal

i say mean things about franco all the time tbh, imo he is kind of insufferable!! haha. but i love him too.

(♥___♥) (roxymuzak), Sunday, 21 October 2012 04:58 (thirteen years ago)

how is the female lead in freaks and geeks not enjoying the same career as james franco, seth rogen, et al? i think this is a huge injustice. her character is the most relate-able ever for me w/r/t high school gals in transition, moreseo than claire in my so-called life, or whatever other touchstones.

nothing has ever transported me to high school as much as that moment early on in freaks and geeks when daniel's GF dumps her purse out on the floor and daniel is like "whats wrong with you, are you on your period?" but doesnt really care that the purse has been dumped out, or doesnt really act appropriately, perhaps because he is more concerned about being cool and standoffish. then he kind of half-heartedly helps her pick up the last of her stuff. "don't you have to go to class too?" "i'll survive." and she's still in love with him, cause.

(♥___♥) (roxymuzak), Sunday, 21 October 2012 05:02 (thirteen years ago)

my <3 was pounding during that. also all the scenes showing lindsay outgrowing her old bff - the girl dancing to "come sail away" while she stands there in her army jacket, etc. i feel that. that actually might have been covered better in mty co-called life though and in less of a caricatured way, though. both shows are great. freaks and geeks, and particularly lindsay/her relationship to the guys in her life, speak to some deep part of me though, i don't know.

(♥___♥) (roxymuzak), Sunday, 21 October 2012 05:06 (thirteen years ago)

the scene where she finds daniel looking through her pics and trophies, omg

"you win a lot, dont you?" - so in character, like that is a sentence that could only be uttered by someone who has never won anything ever. scene is so crammed with teenage tension. also i wish i could adopt sam, he is the ideal dream son imo

(♥___♥) (roxymuzak), Sunday, 21 October 2012 05:09 (thirteen years ago)

yeah, sam brings out some intense maternal feelings in me iirc.

horseshoe, Sunday, 21 October 2012 13:00 (thirteen years ago)

i don't know what happened to linda cardellini

horseshoe, Sunday, 21 October 2012 13:00 (thirteen years ago)

She was on ER for a while.

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Sunday, 21 October 2012 13:06 (thirteen years ago)

Wasn't she blonde on that? It was NAGL.

three boobed space princess (ENBB), Sunday, 21 October 2012 14:22 (thirteen years ago)

i remember listening to a f&g dvd commentary where cardellini was all uncomfortable watching it because to believably inhabit lindsey the show creators had asked her to wear minimal/no makeup and she found it hard to look at herself, and i was like are you crazy you're the prettiest.

horseshoe, Sunday, 21 October 2012 14:24 (thirteen years ago)

that's ridiculous, she is the prettiest girl

(♥___♥) (roxymuzak), Sunday, 21 October 2012 14:45 (thirteen years ago)

god yeah. she was gorgeous.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 21 October 2012 15:05 (thirteen years ago)

That's not an inoculation against wanting to hide behind makeup though! Makeup is complicated, IMO.

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Sunday, 21 October 2012 15:07 (thirteen years ago)

yes you are right! i realize my post kind of reads like some clueless dude saying "women are so much prettier without makeup," which wasn't quite what i meant. it just made me a little sad, when i was listening to that commentary.

horseshoe, Sunday, 21 October 2012 15:09 (thirteen years ago)

it's a little bit different when there's, what, 15 years remove between the show itself & the commentary tho

esp when she's looking at herself as a young girl as an adult woman

it would be kind of a bummer to hear that from her, regardless of how u feel about makep.

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 21 October 2012 15:14 (thirteen years ago)

i think the commentary was recorded not long after the show, tbf. the dvds came out shortly afterward iirc.

horseshoe, Sunday, 21 October 2012 15:19 (thirteen years ago)

really? then nm :)

set the controls for the heart of the sun (VegemiteGrrl), Sunday, 21 October 2012 15:30 (thirteen years ago)

yeah obv makeup is not a tool intended to remedy ugliness, or w/e. i wear makeup and i don't think i'm ugly. feeling like you look ugly strictly because you're sans makeup is hard to wrap my mind around. hollywood people are notably weirder about this stuff than normal people tho

(♥___♥) (roxymuzak), Sunday, 21 October 2012 15:38 (thirteen years ago)

that's how it seemed to me, like an in-the-hollywood-bell-jar distorting her image of herself type thing. she was a young woman at the time.

horseshoe, Sunday, 21 October 2012 15:43 (thirteen years ago)

I admire F&G but mostly find it impenetrable. Probably not surprisingly.

purveyor of generations (in orbit), Sunday, 21 October 2012 15:55 (thirteen years ago)

Bill Haverchuck is my favorite. Also not quite enough girls on the show to have a character I identified with personally (although the show was p accurate representation of my hs experience from a few perspectives)

I understand what everyone's saying about makeup, and I wear it/have no prob with it whatsoever. I just felt like it was weird to say that she was pretty and therefore should be confident about her face. Sad fact is I think everyone I know quietly hates something about her own face, pretty or not, and that makes me sad. Not excluding myself here.

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Sunday, 21 October 2012 16:09 (thirteen years ago)

Wait before you start thinking that I am an asshole -- I don't think that attractiveness and prettiness are the same thing.

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Sunday, 21 October 2012 16:15 (thirteen years ago)

Also in a really terrible/sad mood so pls take this awful conversation with a grain of salt.

these albatrosses have no fear of man (La Lechera), Sunday, 21 October 2012 16:17 (thirteen years ago)

LL, you are right, I think. And I hope the sadness passes quickly.

ljubljana, Sunday, 21 October 2012 18:31 (thirteen years ago)

It's a constant fite for me to try to not care about being "pretty" btw. I am uninterested in prettiness in other people, I prefer beauty, character, individuality, what have you. But in myself I judge my femininity/"prettiness" all the time.

purveyor of generations (in orbit), Sunday, 21 October 2012 18:34 (thirteen years ago)

Sort of constantly amazed by married couples in which the men find the women "beautiful" even though they see them sick, hungover, sweaty, un-pretty all the time because omg lyfe, and I just can't...believe it? Even though it's right in front of me all the time obvs! Serious personal issue alert, clearly. AND ALSO somehow in my mind men are exempt from the reverse of this pressure.

purveyor of generations (in orbit), Sunday, 21 October 2012 18:38 (thirteen years ago)

Or, I should say, long term real life couples, not just marrieds, but since there are lots of ppl in this thread who are specif married it was easy short-hand.

purveyor of generations (in orbit), Sunday, 21 October 2012 18:39 (thirteen years ago)

xp i always chalk it up to the stereotypical thought that men are like dogs, and like the dog that loves you because you feed it, men find their ltr lady beautiful because she is the provider of sexytimes - at least that's how i felt in my last ltr

sarahell, Sunday, 21 October 2012 18:46 (thirteen years ago)

That seems...unflattering to both parties?

purveyor of generations (in orbit), Sunday, 21 October 2012 18:50 (thirteen years ago)

Or maybe ungenerous is a better word. Still, that's not an answer I can rest with.

purveyor of generations (in orbit), Sunday, 21 October 2012 18:50 (thirteen years ago)

xp - i did not say i thought it was a healthy perception!

sarahell, Sunday, 21 October 2012 18:57 (thirteen years ago)

like it's definitely indicative of "personal issues"

sarahell, Sunday, 21 October 2012 18:58 (thirteen years ago)

Heh.

purveyor of generations (in orbit), Sunday, 21 October 2012 18:59 (thirteen years ago)

still, i think "sexytimes" is a glib shorthand, really - like shooting-the-shit-at-a-bar-in-mixed-company shorthand - and it stands for positive feelings from physical intimacy.

sarahell, Sunday, 21 October 2012 19:02 (thirteen years ago)

I believe that guys find ladies they normally find sexy/beautiful the same when sick, pregnant, in pajamas, whatever - as long and they aren't weird and extremely extremely superficial (ie equating beauty with amount of makeup or w/e). If I'm really attracted to someone it isn't diminished by their looking wan or jaundiced it whatever due to sickness, or wearing stupid clothes, etc. Tbf: though I believe that, it is hard to think about myself, and my relationship and I get really self conscious STILL about Andy seeing me looking rough.

(♥___♥) (roxymuzak), Sunday, 21 October 2012 21:11 (thirteen years ago)

I had poison ivy all over my face this summer and literally looked identical to cotton from king of the hill. I thought, how long would Andy endure this?!

(♥___♥) (roxymuzak), Sunday, 21 October 2012 21:12 (thirteen years ago)

Sort of constantly amazed by married couples in which the men find the women "beautiful" even though they see them sick, hungover, sweaty, un-pretty all the time because omg lyfe, and I just can't...believe it?

Many years ago, when I was having major external-beauty issues, my mom tried to explain someting to me about how she and my father "thought about" one another. At the time, they were married for ~30 years (and are now married 40+ years). Mom said to me, "you cease thinking about someone you are so deeply intwined with as a physical being. When I think of your father, I think about a million other things before I think six-one, dark hair, brown eyes, etc.). It just doesn't cross my mind what his *physical* person is."

I have found this to be so true, even though spouse and I find each other physically attactive, that physical aspect is not what either of us identifies as *us*.

Not sure I have made sense there, but I totally get relationships transcending the physical being.
