there are hordes of them, that's why it's stupid, it's like making a documentary about breakfast-eaters.

― iatee, Sunday, 19 June 2011 03:24 (twelve years ago) link
ok if the doc was out in 08 maybe we were filming in 07 & i was 16
― flopson, Sunday, 19 June 2011 03:25 (twelve years ago) link
the movie was about short males of all ages
― flopson, Sunday, 19 June 2011 03:26 (twelve years ago) link
I think flopson and friends' approach sounds kind and endearing, it has a freaks and geeks tone to it.
― estela, Sunday, 19 June 2011 03:26 (twelve years ago) link
breakfast-eaters was a poor example to use on greedy old ilx.

the same friend also once met the creator or director or something of law & order: svu at a dinner party thru his tangentially high-society jewish family and asked him if he would name a character after him, & he did and the character was a rapist!

This is actually pretty interesting to me. As I said earlier I like being tall - a lot. I'm either 5'9" or 5'10" depending on who by and when I'm measured and I think that's sort of the perfect tall height for a woman. It's not so tall that it seems freakish but it's tall enough that I reap the benefits. I think that being a tall woman can be a huge benefit in terms of commanding respect and being taken seriously by men. That might sound strange but I think it's a lot easier for people to dismiss small women than it is for them to dismiss taller women and I feel like in certain situations (work, school) smaller female friends have had to work work harder at being heard and taken seriously than I have. In some ways height and physical presense = power and I think definitely benefited from being tall.

this is a thing i have a complex about in terms of being short but tbf maybe people dismiss me because i'm crazy and it has nothing to do with my height.
― horseshoe, Sunday, 19 June 2011 18:14 (twelve years ago) link
That's basically what I meant -- always reminds me of that little bit before Daydream Believer where Davy Jones asks "is it because I'm short?" (or us it just ME?)
― heartbreak beet (La Lechera), Sunday, 19 June 2011 18:23 (twelve years ago) link
this sucks for tall ppl too, ime
― blank, Sunday, 19 June 2011 18:23 (twelve years ago) link
really the one thing that sucks about being short & finding clothes is that stuff that's on sale is always L & XL
― J0rdan S., Sunday, 19 June 2011 18:27 (twelve years ago) link
I'm a short woman and also have a complex abt not being taken seriously. I've always put it down to other looks-related issues rather than height specifically but actually shortness may play into it more than I've realised.
(this is really winding me up at work lately, hence the thread I attempted to revive y/day about bitterness, cz the things which set it off are not going to go away but I was hoping maybe my reaction to them could be tamed. oh well)
― sambal dalek (a passing spacecadet), Sunday, 19 June 2011 18:45 (twelve years ago) link
i'm the same height as ENBB and it does help as far as being taken seriously. i didn't think about it so much because wherever i've worked, i've been used to generally being about the same height as most of the men. but the guy who's currently the head of my department is kind of soft spoken and probably 6'3 - and i found him pretty intimidating for a while, just because of that. not used to talking to people who are that much taller.

;p
having a long torso means there are basically no t-shirts for me that don't cause Bill S Preston Esq bare midriff awfulness.

If you go to outlet stores for fancy menswear brands basically everything on their shelves is 44/46/48 inch chest and 38+ waist - I once asked if they ever had anything smaller and the guy said "oh no, those sell out instantly".
― Gravel Puzzleworth, Sunday, 19 June 2011 22:17 (twelve years ago) link
oh outlet stores, right.
I may be fat but i wear from this season, tyvm

I thought most clothes sold in outlet stores nowadays were either seconds or made especially to be sold there.
