I know that that's what you'd naturally think but - trying to hunt it down now, I just read it the other day - blind test with expert olive oil dudes revealed no diff btwn super-kvlt EVOO & garden-variety Spanish olive oil

Hmm - would intrigue me if so. I've certainly had olive oils that are almost spicy in their piercing oliveness, and supermarket oils that are bland as fuck. Perhaps so long as they're unrefined, they'll always have that freshness of flavour - 'garden-variety Spanish olive oil' still suggests good-quality produce

there was a news feature back home when i was younger where they found an italian dude on a tractor and gave him the pepsi challenge between what was being sold in a uk supermarket as evoo and some local stuff, and the dude chugged the latter and spat out the uk store stuff like it was poison. quality investigative journalism.

You do get good oils in supermarkets, but they do tend to be the expensive ones nobody buys except my foodie friend <3
