And in other news, my head is rinsed from writing 2000 words about a sexist D4v1d B4il3y photoshoot in 12 hours, without directly accusing DB of sexism.

are you robot? (suzy), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 19:57 (thirteen years ago) link

(like button down shirts that fit your front but arent huge in the arms etc)

^^^^This is my number 1 pet peeve

make it count, son (sunny successor), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 21:14 (thirteen years ago) link

i've got a largish front and big shoulders and arms, so i only have the problem of shirts being too tight and puckery all over or having sleeves so long i feel like i'm playing dress-up.

sarahel, Tuesday, 12 October 2010 21:16 (thirteen years ago) link

i don't have a bust problem but i do not like the drapey, sloppy fit of clothes in stores at this time, nor do i like the fact that no clothing manufacturer seems to know where my waist is. (hint: it is not in the middle of my ribs)

The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 21:19 (thirteen years ago) link

hahaa
tho tbh i am high-waisted so my waist almost is (but isn't)

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 21:35 (thirteen years ago) link

i hate bras with padding, even tho i own a few, but their padding is thin and doesn't really deserve the name. i call them my winter bras.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 21:36 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah, i'm high waisted too, but i'll tell you what -- i've bought dresses with belts that, apparently, are supposed to ignore my actual waist and accentuate my mid-rib region. lazy design!

The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 21:36 (thirteen years ago) link

I wear button down shirts a lot (every day at work, for a start, and the nicer ones in the evening too) and it's really hard to even find any in high street clothes shops lately.

My #1 peeve is that I am pretty fattey and once you move up the sizings trousers seem to billow out in the lower back to a ridiculous extent while not being particularly roomy at the front or round the top of the thighs. Am I a weird shape or is this a thing for other people?

what is he like? the guy's a juggalo, man (a passing spacecadet), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 21:41 (thirteen years ago) link

I definitely suffer fro the "if it fits in the butt, it's too big in the waist" problem, leading to the low back gap. Is that what you mean? I sew darts into the waist of pretty much everything.

Regular Stormy (Jenny), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 21:45 (thirteen years ago) link

are you referring to the above-the-butt pucker?

xp - yeah, jenny & i appear to have the same issue

sarahel, Tuesday, 12 October 2010 21:46 (thirteen years ago) link

whenever i see a woman with my same waist/ass proportions walking down the street wearing jeans that are flattering, i want to stop her and ask, "where did you get those jeans?"

sarahel, Tuesday, 12 October 2010 21:48 (thirteen years ago) link

you should do that!

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 21:55 (thirteen years ago) link

Pretty much, yeah, but sometimes it can even be too tight in the front of the waist while providing enough "butt pucker" in the back waist to, you know, carry my shopping home in, etc

maybe that's what it's there for

what is he like? the guy's a juggalo, man (a passing spacecadet), Tuesday, 12 October 2010 21:55 (thirteen years ago) link

i should, but i often feel self-conscious being a white chick and the women in question being African-American

sarahel, Tuesday, 12 October 2010 21:55 (thirteen years ago) link

do any of you know of any groups in your area or elsewhere that were specifically created to combat sexist police behavior?

(♥_♥) (roxymuzak), Thursday, 14 October 2010 22:46 (thirteen years ago) link

most of the ones in my area are either focused on racism and queer issues

sarahel, Thursday, 14 October 2010 22:49 (thirteen years ago) link

in the past couple of days it seems tons of bad things have happened to people i know that are totally inappropriate

(♥_♥) (roxymuzak), Thursday, 14 October 2010 22:50 (thirteen years ago) link

for example, being pulled over because you vaguely resemble a local prostitute

(♥_♥) (roxymuzak), Thursday, 14 October 2010 22:50 (thirteen years ago) link

i mean !!!

^this actually happened to a girl i know, and they actually said "vaguely"

(♥_♥) (roxymuzak), Thursday, 14 October 2010 22:50 (thirteen years ago) link

i actually had a positive cop interaction last week, after this lying douchebag asshole attempted to cut me off from backing into a parking space across the street from the club where my friends' bands were playing, then accused me of damaging his SIXTEEN THOUSAND DOLLAR BMW WITH MY PIECE OF SHIT TOYOTA. There was no damage. I tried to be civil with the guy, but once he trotted out the word "bitch" - i gave up and walked away.

sarahel, Thursday, 14 October 2010 22:52 (thirteen years ago) link

Area chapter of the National Lawyer's Guild might be a good place to start. ACLU might help. I def know of one (two maybe) local sex worker rights orgs and some community groups focused on police authority abuses in general.

Following the sock discussions, I couldn't resist ordering some of the World's Softest Socks. Eagerly awaiting their arrival. Any recommendations for online stockists of good black opaque tights?

ljubljana, Tuesday, 26 October 2010 14:16 (thirteen years ago) link

The best black tights I have ever had are Donna Karan matte jersey - I don't know if they're still made but I have some pairs that are eeeeeeasily 20 years old and appear to be bulletproof. In the meantime, try Tabio (Japanese, expensive) or the budgety British store New Look's 120 denier tights - a fashion editor I know who's tried both says 'better than Chanel'.

"good luck, sycophants!" (suzy), Tuesday, 26 October 2010 15:06 (thirteen years ago) link

i get tights from dance supply stores - figuring they're pretty durable

sarahel, Tuesday, 26 October 2010 19:01 (thirteen years ago) link

There is that as well, beentheredonethatage15, but your standard Danskins are pretty scratchy.

"good luck, sycophants!" (suzy), Tuesday, 26 October 2010 20:02 (thirteen years ago) link

hmm - i have not found danskins to be scratchy

sarahel, Tuesday, 26 October 2010 21:08 (thirteen years ago) link

I have a pair of Danskin fishnets that appear to be immortal but also have this footpad thing that loves to fuck with my toes. I have some black opaque tights that my sister bought me from Old Navy in 2000 that are still going strong but I have no idea if this is a fluke or not.

my oldest sister says the same thing about those DK matte jersey tights

What color tights should I wear with a denim skirt?

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Wednesday, 27 October 2010 00:20 (thirteen years ago) link

Any color! Depends more on your top in that case, although you can't go wrong with black.

I've got ten bucks. SURPRISE ME. (Laurel), Wednesday, 27 October 2010 00:22 (thirteen years ago) link

The two tops I wear with this skirt are both black, and the shoes are black, too. I have a pair of fishnets that I got for that skirt that I haven't worn yet. (I'll post a picture whenever I get around to it.)

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Wednesday, 27 October 2010 00:32 (thirteen years ago) link

i'd say it depends on how you feel about your legs. Like wear bright colored tights if you feel like you have good legs; wear neutral/dark colors if you don't.

sarahel, Wednesday, 27 October 2010 00:58 (thirteen years ago) link

I do have nice legs, but I've always preferred dark/neutral tights.

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Wednesday, 27 October 2010 01:01 (thirteen years ago) link

I got the best purple tights recently and then I wore them to work and was stared at all day. They're strictly non-work tights now but they're still the best.

master of retardment (ENBB), Wednesday, 27 October 2010 01:04 (thirteen years ago) link

If yr tops are black, then tight color or pattern depends more on the skirt length. A bold color or pattern needs some space to work in. If skirt is long, the statement gets cramped. If u like yr legs, work the bold tights with a skirt somewhat above the knee.

Also, E, I'm very sad to hear abt your tights problem! I say, wear colored tights more often! then they'll stop talking. :)

i remember wearing plum colored tights to a certain job and getting looks like i was a wild woman. i didn't realize this could ever be a "thing."

i really love what a denim miniskirt looks like over black tights w/ boots or chuck taylors + a white top and red lipstick, but this is the 90s punk girl in me i think

(♥_♥) (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 27 October 2010 12:13 (thirteen years ago) link

with any top, really

(♥_♥) (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 27 October 2010 12:13 (thirteen years ago) link

I have burnt orange, mustard yellow, and Smurf blue tights, and I wear them all to work. A few people raised their eyebrows or w/e but I don't see why not raising the eyebrows of a few conservative people should be my goal.

I've got ten bucks. SURPRISE ME. (Laurel), Wednesday, 27 October 2010 13:02 (thirteen years ago) link

^^ ditto

patterned tights too, stripes (vertical), crocheted, you name it.

The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Wednesday, 27 October 2010 14:06 (thirteen years ago) link

Today's are black knit, a bit like if cabling came in strange geometric patterns.

In addition to my archive supply of Donna Karan, I've got tons of grey and dove-grey tights from New Look, plus the better-than-Chanel black ones; hot pink 120 denier from Tabio, but prob won't buy tights from there again because the waist elasticity went in the gunmetal ones I have; an amazing Spandex pair I can't bear to throw from 99X in NYC, with a persimmon/grey/camel/cream/black rendering of a Hokusai-ish pattern, plus tons of dead stock Mary Quant white fishnet anklets - because they were in a dusty shop going for like 50p/pair, I walked off with £10 worth.

"good luck, sycophants!" (suzy), Wednesday, 27 October 2010 14:29 (thirteen years ago) link

suzy, your tights collection sounds A+

(♥_♥) (roxymuzak), Wednesday, 27 October 2010 14:58 (thirteen years ago) link

The Hokusai tights are cool but for years I looked for large-pane harlequin pattern black and white, with no success (and no fucking jewel tones lest I resemble some random RenFester) intending to wear them with Westwood mini-crini and the jacket I'm wearing in my LOL College photos. Usually that outfit demanded black/white hoop tights and brothel creepers, LOL'80s

I really need to do a purge of MOR black tights with safe office-worker patterns and find a good source of whitegirl flesh fishnets w/black seam.

Also: ESM's 30th anniversary is next week and there's a massive party. OH DAER I NEED TO CALL IN A DRESS. If you could call any designer/shop and ask for something to borrow, it would be...?

"good luck, sycophants!" (suzy), Wednesday, 27 October 2010 18:23 (thirteen years ago) link

wow

sarahel, Wednesday, 27 October 2010 18:30 (thirteen years ago) link

Should be noted I have never 'called in a dress' before... generally wear vintage to these things so as not to inadvertently look the same as someone else.

"good luck, sycophants!" (suzy), Wednesday, 27 October 2010 18:33 (thirteen years ago) link

I have some awesome tights with a largish dogtooth pattern, that are actually black and white rather than just patterned black. I love them but they don't really stretch well ;(

Not the real Village People, Wednesday, 27 October 2010 18:37 (thirteen years ago) link

The skirt (the only wearable skirt I own right now, I hope this changes soon) comes up to just below the knee.

Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Wednesday, 27 October 2010 20:27 (thirteen years ago) link

Rox the demin miniskirt black tights and boots/chucks combo is something I've been wearing often lately minus the red lipstick because it makes me look too clownish.
