I've found that I like the taste of some types of alcohol after decades of wincing whenever I tried to drink. At 42, is it too late for me to start drinking socially without becoming an alcoholic?

Are you sure of that? I don't think I've ever heard of anyone who started after 22 or 23 or so that didn't end up with a drinking problem.

why would you end up with a drinking problem? Generally, isn't it people who start drinking early that end up as alcoholics?

What? That just sounds crazy. There is not reason that starting to drink later in life should cause it to be a problem for you unless you are genetically predisposed to alcoholism.

You haven't read about the people with stories that include phrases like "They called me the Coca-Cola girl until I was 25..." "I was 30 and got a job that required me to socialize...." I used to run into them all of the time. Or is this yet another old, outdated pattern of life?

i dunno - but from my experience with going to dinners and parties with my parents and grandparents, the older generations were quite capable of putting 'em away and being socially functional.

Christine I really don't think there is any correlation between people who don't drink until they're older and alcoholism. If there is I've certainly never heard of it.

Yeah and I just did a cursory search and it seems that if there is any relationship between age at first drink and risk of alcoholism it's for those who start drinking at a really early age. I honestly don't think you have anything to worry about if you want to enjoy a drink or two socially.

Thank you--I've always felt a mixture of guilt and mild fear whenever I drank or saw someone drink that's never lined up with anything that's happened in my life. It's faded away for the most part, but it comes out when I least expect it.
