Tonic, lemon, a shit-ton of ice = this drink is called a SAFFIE.

― Not the real Village People, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 01:27 (fifteen years ago)
I've found that I like the taste of some types of alcohol after decades of wincing whenever I tried to drink. At 42, is it too late for me to start drinking socially without becoming an alcoholic?
― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 02:15 (fifteen years ago)
it's never too late to start
― sarahel, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 02:17 (fifteen years ago)
Are you sure of that? I don't think I've ever heard of anyone who started after 22 or 23 or so that didn't end up with a drinking problem.
― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 02:21 (fifteen years ago)
why would you end up with a drinking problem? Generally, isn't it people who start drinking early that end up as alcoholics?
― sarahel, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 02:21 (fifteen years ago)
What? That just sounds crazy. There is not reason that starting to drink later in life should cause it to be a problem for you unless you are genetically predisposed to alcoholism.
― master of retardment (ENBB), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 02:21 (fifteen years ago)
should have read "no reason"
― master of retardment (ENBB), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 02:22 (fifteen years ago)
yeah surely you're kidding, right?
― The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 02:23 (fifteen years ago)
i started drinking late in life and am not an alcoholic fwiw
― horseshoe, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 02:26 (fifteen years ago)
i didn't start drinking until i was 15
― sarahel, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 02:26 (fifteen years ago)
We need to have a flower food&drink fap
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 02:28 (fifteen years ago)
yeah that saffron gin is beautiful. would drink.
― horseshoe, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 02:29 (fifteen years ago)
You haven't read about the people with stories that include phrases like "They called me the Coca-Cola girl until I was 25..." "I was 30 and got a job that required me to socialize...." I used to run into them all of the time. Or is this yet another old, outdated pattern of life?
― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 02:31 (fifteen years ago)
sounds like a crummy excuse to me
― The Great Jumanji, (La Lechera), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 02:31 (fifteen years ago)
i dunno - but from my experience with going to dinners and parties with my parents and grandparents, the older generations were quite capable of putting 'em away and being socially functional.
― sarahel, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 02:32 (fifteen years ago)
How late?
― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 02:34 (fifteen years ago)
Christine I really don't think there is any correlation between people who don't drink until they're older and alcoholism. If there is I've certainly never heard of it.
― master of retardment (ENBB), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 02:36 (fifteen years ago)
You may be right, I need to check the literature about it.
― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 02:38 (fifteen years ago)
i mean, even if there is, you can always make a concerted effort to drink responsibly
― sarahel, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 02:39 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah and I just did a cursory search and it seems that if there is any relationship between age at first drink and risk of alcoholism it's for those who start drinking at a really early age. I honestly don't think you have anything to worry about if you want to enjoy a drink or two socially.
― master of retardment (ENBB), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 02:42 (fifteen years ago)
Thank you--I've always felt a mixture of guilt and mild fear whenever I drank or saw someone drink that's never lined up with anything that's happened in my life. It's faded away for the most part, but it comes out when I least expect it.
― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 02:46 (fifteen years ago)
i think i was 25ish?
― horseshoe, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 03:06 (fifteen years ago)
The words "late in life" and "25ish" don't seem to go together somehow, but thanks for the answer.
― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 03:11 (fifteen years ago)
This sounds like a wonderful idea.
― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 03:13 (fifteen years ago)
Well, late compared to teenage drunkards like sarahel and yours truly. xp
― Jenny, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 03:14 (fifteen years ago)
yeah, i just meant late in comparison with most drinkers...honestly don't see much of a difference between 25 and 42 in this context.
― horseshoe, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 03:28 (fifteen years ago)
i had some lavender chocolate tonight! :)
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 03:38 (fifteen years ago)

― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 03:44 (fifteen years ago)

Smoked weed at 25 and dropped acid at 26. And I'm the only person on ILX that has never been drunk.
― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 03:46 (fifteen years ago)
i don't know - it was my friend's chocolate - fancy $ stuff! will inquire

― Christine Green Leafy Dragon Indigo, Wednesday, 15 September 2010 03:59 (fifteen years ago)
I want there to be a liqueur made from rose petals. Seriously. Find me such a thing, please ILX.
― cymose corymb (Karen D. Tregaskin), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 09:29 (fifteen years ago)
there must be such a thing - my brother got given a liqueur made from poppy petals for his birthday, so, you know, they have the technology.
― camphor jars (c sharp major), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 10:27 (fifteen years ago)
it tastes like cough syrup, not flowers at all :(
― camphor jars (c sharp major), Wednesday, 15 September 2010 10:28 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, but poppies in general don't taste very nice. They're eaten for their effect, not their taste. Unlike roses.

A lot of my husband's diet during his parents' divorce consisted of rose petals and fruit gathered from his neighbor's yards.

when you eat beets and you have reddish pee - do you ever do a double-take and think briefly that your period might have started? This happened to me at least once.
