yeah maybe im being harsh but i remember that book being like a better-written bernard lewis screed, a lot of "islam is a backwards and militaristic religion" etc etc... i sort of assumed his jaw had dropped at "oh my how barbaric islam is!!" but i might have misinterpreted him

no, i mean that was how i read it, too, but i am weirdly sympathetic to people who admit having that reaction to islam, maybe because i expect that every nonmuslim secretly harbors it?
