Yeah, what's the fuss about Breathless? The characters are nowhere near as good as those in Pulp Fiction!

peacocks, Tuesday, 20 July 2010 14:55 (fifteen years ago)

tbh she's quite right, most new wave films are shit

but not really so much like twilight

I’ll put you in a f *ckin Weingarten you c*nt! (history mayne), Tuesday, 20 July 2010 15:30 (fifteen years ago)

Everytime I hit 'submit post' the internet gets dumber (darraghmac), Tuesday, 20 July 2010 15:34 (fifteen years ago)

It's like some recursive loop.

bamcquern, Tuesday, 20 July 2010 18:33 (fifteen years ago)

what does My Night at Maud's have to do with Twilight or Bonnie & Clyde?

sarahel, Tuesday, 20 July 2010 18:42 (fifteen years ago)

"The one thing you can never be wrong about is your own opinion. It's when you start giving your reasons that you lay yourself open." -- Roger Ebert

sarahel, Tuesday, 20 July 2010 18:47 (fifteen years ago)

my night at maud's isn't new wave, if she's saying that it is

I’ll put you in a f *ckin Weingarten you c*nt! (history mayne), Tuesday, 20 July 2010 19:26 (fifteen years ago)

if there is one thing bamcquern loves it is recursive loops

roxymuzak, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 03:22 (fifteen years ago)

and don't forget procedural generation (recently I've been loving this Wizards of Wor-style fantasy shooter that has procedurally generated levels)

I think Rohmer's honorary new wave? Just because he's ten years older than those dudes, he wrote for Cahiers and was coming at film-making with a similar mindset. I think of New Waves as

1. Smart guys at Cahiers who wrote smart stuff about movies and then decided to make some.
2. Those guys' friends.
3. Left Banke people?

bamcquern, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 04:00 (fifteen years ago)

it's those people and more

and rohmer's early shit is definitely new wave. 'le signe de leo' or whatever it was called.

but i don't think any movie made in 1968-9 era is new wave: wouldn't call truffaut's or godard's late 60s films new wave either

it was a p specific late 50s/early 60s thing to do with low budgets, newness, youthiness...

the new wave included all kinds of forgotten people like pierre kast, jean-pierre mocky, jacques rozier

[tbh the left bank dudes fit into it pretty dodgily coz they'd been around since the early 1950s, but they do fit i guess]

I’ll put you in a f *ckin Weingarten you c*nt! (history mayne), Wednesday, 21 July 2010 08:25 (fifteen years ago)

I think I said "New Waves" on purpose but I don't know what I was thinking.

Yeah, they fit pretty dodgily. I think your post sums everything up that needs to be said about this.

bamcquern, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 18:44 (fifteen years ago)

what was that Rohmer called? Do you actually not remember - or is this art of pretend forgetfulness at work?

sarahel, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 18:46 (fifteen years ago)

He doesn't remember! He didn't want to google it! It's not that odd.

bamcquern, Wednesday, 21 July 2010 18:48 (fifteen years ago)

*sigh*

this is a total old-school original-definition challop:

I'd rather have graffiti than the corporate advertising that dominates our visual landscape. I think of both in oppositional terms.
