Oof. That's a tough one.

sinister chemical wisdom (Jenny), Wednesday, 14 July 2010 18:17 (sixteen years ago)

xp - kinda glad i no longer have the obligation to deal some of my ex bf's family members tbh

sarahel, Wednesday, 14 July 2010 18:36 (sixteen years ago)

I need that Elumen red. I would love to go back to the red bangs again. The bonus of grey hair is, you can dye it insane colours, and dont need to bleach!

Gumbercules (Trayce), Thursday, 15 July 2010 00:14 (fifteen years ago)

Hm Speaking of, I need a haircut and I'm reluctant to go to my usual place cos the new chick who did my hair last month or so did a shite job and I hate it.

Gumbercules (Trayce), Thursday, 15 July 2010 00:15 (fifteen years ago)

You should not go back if you're getting shite haircuts there.

sinister chemical wisdom (Jenny), Thursday, 15 July 2010 00:27 (fifteen years ago)

speaking of hair, mine is STILL growing out! it's been like a million years.

horseshoe, Thursday, 15 July 2010 00:28 (fifteen years ago)

Only the last one was. Usually they do a great job - i think its the fact I'm trying to grow out a short fringe. Well, har this thread has made me book in for a haircut after work today anyway. And I think I'll get some bright red streaks done.

Gumbercules (Trayce), Thursday, 15 July 2010 00:30 (fifteen years ago)

Can you request a different stylist? Or request that you not get the one who did a bad job?

sinister chemical wisdom (Jenny), Thursday, 15 July 2010 00:33 (fifteen years ago)

I just bought my very first set of matching, grown-up dishes. They are all wrapped up and we're moving soon, but I unwrapped on of the mugs and I keep going into the kitchen to fondle it in awed reverence.

sinister chemical wisdom (Jenny), Thursday, 15 July 2010 00:34 (fifteen years ago)

aw!

horseshoe, Thursday, 15 July 2010 00:35 (fifteen years ago)

Trayce, I buy it off eBay (in the past) or amazon (lately) bc technically it's only for sale to hairdressers. I bleach my hair, use Elumen Prepare, then rinse & stick elumen RR@all on my head. After a base coat or two it's pretty much permanent - ever so slightly lighter after 3 weeks, having freshly bleached my hair prior. A delight.
I am pretty sure it's organic too!

she started dancing to that (Finefinemusic), Thursday, 15 July 2010 00:35 (fifteen years ago)

xp They're blue! And from reputable purveyor of household goods Crate and Barrel! I felt like an NYT Style Section profilee as I stood there farting around on my iPhone waiting for the C&B employee to carefully wrap up all my new dishes.

sinister chemical wisdom (Jenny), Thursday, 15 July 2010 00:37 (fifteen years ago)

I can see the headline now. "Trend Watch: White People Are Buying Dishes from Crate and Barrel after Carefully Researching Other Options on the Internet."

sinister chemical wisdom (Jenny), Thursday, 15 July 2010 00:38 (fifteen years ago)

haha i used to look longingly at the windows of the Crate and Barrel on North Ave. i get it.

horseshoe, Thursday, 15 July 2010 00:40 (fifteen years ago)

The picture with the article will be me cradling my mug and staring pensively out the window.

sinister chemical wisdom (Jenny), Thursday, 15 July 2010 00:41 (fifteen years ago)

FFM: sounds good! Never seen it here, though I sometimes get salon level stuff from hairdresser suppliers, where you have to mix with the 60vol or whatever. Mostly I just go to the salon and let them do it tho: I'm crap at doing foils.

i can see it! the article writes itself, really.

i went to Target yesterday, and they sell Magic Eraser sponges that attach to mops!

sarahel, Friday, 16 July 2010 17:57 (fifteen years ago)

HOLY.

peacocks, Friday, 16 July 2010 18:13 (fifteen years ago)

it made for efficient cleaning of the shower - though i regret having to report that it did not do so well on the tub - the walls of the shower are a different material.

sarahel, Friday, 16 July 2010 18:32 (fifteen years ago)

i still believe these really are made of magic. industrial and slightly evil magic, but magic nonetheless. i need to buy new ones.

i also need a magical attitude adjustment about this town and guys, i mean, men. gotta shift out of comfort zone and try not to hate it, or, yknow, run away from home, lol...

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Saturday, 17 July 2010 13:29 (fifteen years ago)

what attitude needs adjusting?

sarahel, Saturday, 17 July 2010 19:38 (fifteen years ago)

the one where I am really just unfairly misanthropic when it comes to other socializing possibilities in this town

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Saturday, 17 July 2010 20:07 (fifteen years ago)

are there events, places, things that seem interesting but you're skeptical about, or is it just that it feels like there's nothing worth doing outside of what you already do/where you regularly go?

sarahel, Saturday, 17 July 2010 20:08 (fifteen years ago)

on the subject of hair dye - i quit dying my hair after almost 20 years a few years ago - i occasionally miss it, because my hair is a pretty boring shade of brown, but it makes my skin look better coloring-wise.

sarahel, Saturday, 17 July 2010 20:19 (fifteen years ago)

I started again recently after about five dye-free years but went one shade lighter than the colour I used to use.

the phantom flâneur flinger (suzy), Saturday, 17 July 2010 20:26 (fifteen years ago)

i've noticed a lot of women do this as they get older - dye hair in lighter shades - like my mom dyes her hair light brown, which i think is weird because her natural hair color is dark brown/almost black - is it a skin tone thing?

sarahel, Saturday, 17 July 2010 20:29 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah total skin tone thing bc skin tone needs more 'warming up' as we get older. Like I know older ladies who stopped wearing black even bc it started making them look washed out.

I really need to get my hair fixed too right now, along w the bad haircut. and get dif make-up bc I am summer darker/pinker.. And teeth cleaned. This never happens to me - feel like I'm falling apart!

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Saturday, 17 July 2010 20:41 (fifteen years ago)

xp - yeah the first thing - things to do, so many of them, but my skepticism + an often-unexpected shyness needs to take a hike.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Saturday, 17 July 2010 20:44 (fifteen years ago)

Like I know older ladies who stopped wearing black even bc it started making them look washed out.

what a sad thought - i hope these ladies were thin/slender at least ...

sarahel, Saturday, 17 July 2010 20:45 (fifteen years ago)

xp - maybe find a friend that is also interested in said things, or at least is willing to say, "WTF - if it's horrible or lame at least I'll have a good story to tell" to go with you?

sarahel, Saturday, 17 July 2010 20:53 (fifteen years ago)

They started wearing dark brown instead! True stories!

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Saturday, 17 July 2010 20:57 (fifteen years ago)

okay, that's not so sad.

sarahel, Saturday, 17 July 2010 20:58 (fifteen years ago)

It's funny bc I am usually that friend! I do go to many dif places and things - I just don't nec socialize. Need to bring along my more outgoing talk-to-anyone friends and re-learn that skill.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Saturday, 17 July 2010 21:02 (fifteen years ago)

if i lived near you rrrobyn i would totally be the talk-to-anyone friend! i was shy once, so it is totally possible to learn or re-learn that skill.

sarahel, Saturday, 17 July 2010 21:05 (fifteen years ago)

a good way to start is at a bar or party where everyone is drinking/drunk, because if you embarrass yourself, or feel embarrassed in the slightest you can always blame it on alcohol, or at least, it is much more likely that the other people won't remember

sarahel, Saturday, 17 July 2010 21:09 (fifteen years ago)

Wld kiw u for sure - yeah my talk-to-anyone friends all moved away or now have boyfriends, which has changed things. I used to be the get a little drunk, talk to guys, get asked out girl. and then sthing happened, like feeling too old or some crap. But when in sf or nyc all's well on that front. I maybe should just act like in on vacation all the time haha.

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Saturday, 17 July 2010 21:18 (fifteen years ago)

xpost/I used to wear a lot more red than I do now but that's the only 'tone-down' I can think of that really applies (the hair colour difference is minimal and I've been covering grey since I was 19, so whatevs). As far as the aging process goes, I have good genes and a grandmother who seems to have left me her legs (she could go bare in above-the-knee skirts up to age 70, srsly) and her cheekbones. When I am older it is going to be very difficult to give up the dark hair part of the very dark hair/very blue eyes combo.

In other news, yesterday my new editor gave me best thing ever - soon MAC are doing new lines in tribute to Disney villains soon and I am therefore rocking the Cruella de Vil lipstick tube containing a colour called HEARTLESS. Launches late September: http://www.temptalia.com/mac-disney-venomous-villains-collection

the phantom flâneur flinger (suzy), Saturday, 17 July 2010 21:19 (fifteen years ago)

totally having a "all my friends are in relationships and i'm not" bout of glumness now - but, i just got out of a really long relationship less than a year ago, so i feel like it's my turn to feel like that or something ...

but yeah, the "on vacation" thing - seems like it's a concern about consequences or self-image or i dunno

sarahel, Saturday, 17 July 2010 21:22 (fifteen years ago)

Haha yeah i have some issues there and re: permanency

obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Saturday, 17 July 2010 21:35 (fifteen years ago)

I'm thinking about going dark, or darker at least, in terms of hair color come fall. I've done it before but never been totally sure if I liked it or not. Kind of feeling the idea now though tbh.

o sh!t a ˁ˚ᴥ˚ˀ (ENBB), Saturday, 17 July 2010 21:49 (fifteen years ago)

how is when you go gray genetically determined? More precisely, is there a simple way of knowing this based on looking at family members or is it more complicated?

sarahel, Sunday, 18 July 2010 02:00 (fifteen years ago)

My parents were barely grey in their 40s but I was rapidly greying in my 20s and fully so by my mid 30s :( I still have nfi how.

Gumbercules (Trayce), Sunday, 18 July 2010 02:07 (fifteen years ago)

(tho I suspect stress/booze may have added to it)

Gumbercules (Trayce), Sunday, 18 July 2010 02:08 (fifteen years ago)

huh. i'm in my mid-30s and have no gray hair - my mom started going gray in her early 40s, and my dad didn't do so until his early 60s, but it sounds like this means nothing

sarahel, Sunday, 18 July 2010 02:09 (fifteen years ago)

Yeah I always wondered too, but I sis read somewhere that (for eg) heavy druggers/drinkers go grey fast cos of the stress on the body, erm, heh I wonder if thats why i did :(

Gumbercules (Trayce), Sunday, 18 July 2010 03:22 (fifteen years ago)

I DID read, guh.

Gumbercules (Trayce), Sunday, 18 July 2010 03:22 (fifteen years ago)

Data point: I def fell into the heavy substance user category for my 20s plus a few years on either side and I'm 37 and just starting to get enough gray hairs to make it worth my while to color. And it's prob not as noticeable as I think it is.

I always wanted to be the kind of woman who refuse to dye her gray hair but I'm going gray in this washed out, sad way and I guess I am more vain than I realized.

sinister chemical wisdom (Jenny), Sunday, 18 July 2010 03:46 (fifteen years ago)

i've not been a heavy substance abuser and i'm getting a lot of white hairs in my 20s (can't really call it going grey yet) - apparently my grandmother was fully white-headed by her mid-thirties so i've been assuming i have that to look forward to. But it did start when i was emotionally pretty stressed. I'm hoping that if I can keep calm and restrict the stress to small bursts i'll end up with just one white streak rather than depressing salt-and-pepper. (my mother had white streaks like highlights when i was a kid)

oligopoly golightly (c sharp major), Sunday, 18 July 2010 09:46 (fifteen years ago)

i don't have any grey hairs, but every rare once in a while a lone white one appears. i wonder what will happen re: that one day - maybe i will be one of those older ladies who tint their white hair platinum blonde! rad. but yeah my natural quite dark hair colour has dulled out a bit in the past couple of years, plus the summer further dulls it. plus colour is kinda fun! going to go a warm brown-red (as prescribed by 'the good hairstylist' who has been out of town for two months) :)

for all my whare i go meet nice mans, i ended up having a really nice time hanging with newish guy friend yesterday. we have an affinity. not letting it make me nervous, not jumping any guns...
