Saw some girl wearing a coral/orange skort with side buttons, on the subway yest. You'd think I would have done more of a double-take but I guess I'm getting used to hipster fashion repurposing, what with living on the L train now.

The way they're going lately, they'll be into quilted calico by fall. I mean it's too bad I got rid of any of that Little House on the Prairie stuff from junior high, I could sell it to Beacon's Closet for a mint.

like those bags i always see certain people carrying? they have a name, but i forget what it is
― ghee hee hee (La Lechera), Thursday, 8 July 2010 16:08 (sixteen years ago)
OH, you mean the Veronica Bradley or wahtever her name is. That's not exactly what I was thinking of -- for whatever reason the VB line is a favorite of upper-middle class Long Island/Upper East Sidey girls who go to their family's summer cottage on the weekends. The same kind of girls who always have Elsa Peretti-for-Tiffany's necklaces. Whereas the hipster thing I'm anticipating is more of the straight '80s mauve-and-"country kitchen blue" stencil motif.

More Laura Ashley than Vera Bradley?
x-post lol
― o sh!t a ˁ˚ᴥ˚ˀ (ENBB), Thursday, 8 July 2010 16:18 (sixteen years ago)
In Jr High I had a corduroy blue and mauve floral print Laura Asley pants jumpsuit. It was God awful but I could actually sorta see some hipster fashion girl reclaiming that sort of thing.
― o sh!t a ˁ˚ᴥ˚ˀ (ENBB), Thursday, 8 July 2010 16:19 (sixteen years ago)
SEE?? lololol
― the soul of the avocado escapes as soon as you open it (Laurel), Thursday, 8 July 2010 16:20 (sixteen years ago)
Which would N be AGL imo. Just felt the need to clarify that.
― o sh!t a ˁ˚ᴥ˚ˀ (ENBB), Thursday, 8 July 2010 16:20 (sixteen years ago)
I think that "laura ashley" style has already hit central fl.
― peacocks, Thursday, 8 July 2010 16:30 (sixteen years ago)
or maybe it never left?
i saw classic pleasted momjeans on modcloth recently
― ghee hee hee (La Lechera), Thursday, 8 July 2010 16:30 (sixteen years ago)
i mean pleated
― ghee hee hee (La Lechera), Thursday, 8 July 2010 16:31 (sixteen years ago)
lol I was just going to say that based on what I know of central florida I'm willing to bet that it never left.
― o sh!t a ˁ˚ᴥ˚ˀ (ENBB), Thursday, 8 July 2010 16:31 (sixteen years ago)
oops lol
Yeah it's already sort of back, what with the tan/brown lace-up boots everyone's been wearing for a year or two already. I just have this allergic reaction to them now, but I had a black pair in jr high that I thought were very Euro and sophisticated at the time. OH YEAH. But following on the heels of that existing trend, I can see the yoked jackets and quilted flannel calico making the wider scene this fall.

lol cannot believe this style has made a resurgence amongst the youngsi am glad to be old enough to laugh in a self-reflective way at the peaks and troughs of their journeys of self-discovery through lol fashion
and hahaha i had never even heard of Veronica Bradley until i became friends this year with someone from a posh(ish) town in Long Island!
― obliquity of the ecliptic (rrrobyn), Thursday, 8 July 2010 16:37 (sixteen years ago)
Oh I stand corrected, it's VERA Bradley! ENBB for the win.
― the soul of the avocado escapes as soon as you open it (Laurel), Thursday, 8 July 2010 16:38 (sixteen years ago)
I bought my Mom one last year at her request that's how I know it's Vera. They're everywhere on LI and also in Boston among the girls of the type Laurel described. The bean necklace thing made me lol because it's SO OTM.

No more Strawberry Suave? Oh noes!!
― tokyo rosemary, Thursday, 8 July 2010 21:06 (sixteen years ago)
I bought a Laura Ashley nightgown for the summer.
― tokyo rosemary, Thursday, 8 July 2010 21:08 (sixteen years ago)
also, i don't understand "beach hair" but maybe that's because i grew up near the Pacific Ocean, as opposed to the Atlantic?
― sarahel, Thursday, 8 July 2010 21:30 (sixteen years ago)
I got to know beach hair last week; rest assured it exists in the Mediterranean along with JELLYFISH.
― THIS BOOK EQUAL CONJOB (suzy), Thursday, 8 July 2010 21:35 (sixteen years ago)
suzy, you have such a glamorous life - you're like the Miss Jean Brodie of this thread.
― sarahel, Thursday, 8 July 2010 21:45 (sixteen years ago)
LOLLLLLLLLL, you can't be serious. Three-day press trip to Malta = most glam thing I've done all year.
― THIS BOOK EQUAL CONJOB (suzy), Thursday, 8 July 2010 21:47 (sixteen years ago)
most glam thing i've done all year = wear a leopard print sequined jacket i inherited from my grandmother to a speakeasy-themed bar where the cheapest drinks cost $11, then realized that my bar tab was not only more than i've ever paid at a bar, but more than i've ever paid for a meal.
― sarahel, Thursday, 8 July 2010 21:49 (sixteen years ago)
Gah. Besides, the character of Jean Brodie was three things I'm not: bitter, old, a fascist. This is a book people toss around references for and I'm never quite sure if they've bothered to read it.
― THIS BOOK EQUAL CONJOB (suzy), Thursday, 8 July 2010 21:52 (sixteen years ago)
i don't know squat about jean brodie, but your life seems pretty glam to me
― ghee hee hee (La Lechera), Thursday, 8 July 2010 21:59 (sixteen years ago)
xp - yeah, i think i was thinking of the author, rather than the character.
― sarahel, Thursday, 8 July 2010 22:00 (sixteen years ago)
Had first experience with hair dye last night and now my shower is all purple. I tried cleaning it immediately and it didn't come out. Will it ever go away?
― peacocks, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 13:52 (sixteen years ago)
what kind of dye?
― sarahel, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 19:42 (sixteen years ago)
um... the kind from walgreens. lo'real? dark brown.
― peacocks, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 20:28 (sixteen years ago)
It will probably fade eventually. You could try those Mr. Clean Magic Erasers on it - they are fairly miraculous when it comes to cleaning showers/tubs.
― Jaq, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 20:31 (sixteen years ago)
it might take a bit of scrubbing and fairly strong cleansers, but permanent dye does come out.
but your purple stains reminded me of when i graduated from high school, i tried to dye my hair purple with Manic Panic (which involved a trip to the nearest city to purchase, because such things were not sold in the town where i grew up). Probably because my hair is really thick and dry, it did nothing to my hair, but my hands ended up the color of Grimace from the McDonald's ads, so I wore gloves to graduation. I think it was 90 degrees out.
― sarahel, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 20:32 (sixteen years ago)
It always fades over time, in my experience.
― Noise Pictorial Works Juvenile Fiction (Abbott), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 20:32 (sixteen years ago)
it fades, but it doesn't really fade back to white, or whatever color your fixtures are
― sarahel, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 20:36 (sixteen years ago)
What I find on tile/enamel/grout is it's the soap scum that's turned purple, fiberglass/plastic stain directly.
― Jaq, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 20:41 (sixteen years ago)
I once got a friend to dye my hair blue w/ Manic Panic and he did not wear gloves and the following day, had to go to work at the candy store (I know, right?) with blue hands.
I have only ever used wash-out dye at home, and that always came out eventually. Good luck, peacocks.
― sinister chemical wisdom (Jenny), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 20:42 (sixteen years ago)
I definitely wore gloves while doing the dye-ing but I still managed to make a mess. It was my friend's hair and I got a bunch of purple on her ears and forehead and my forearms which all came out pretty fast. I'll try the magic erasers!
I bet you looked classy in gloves, were they fancy ones or winter ones? I used to wear dress gloves or laced cuff socks when I was 5 to look more elegant on outings.
― peacocks, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 20:43 (sixteen years ago)
they were dress gloves. If you're talking about an extensive area of stain, be sure to get at least one package of the magic erasers - they really don't last that long.
― sarahel, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 20:46 (sixteen years ago)
cooool. Yes, good idea!
― peacocks, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 20:47 (sixteen years ago)
but you might be better off using a concentrated amount of comet or bleach and just use the magic erasers on the worst stains.
― sarahel, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 20:48 (sixteen years ago)
For getting rid of stains I have good luck dampening the area, and then dumping a ton of Comet cleanser on there, and letting it sit until I remember I did that & need to go back & clean it up (usually a few hours). The advantage of this solution is it is hella cheap. Since it is a tub it will also be easy.
― Noise Pictorial Works Juvenile Fiction (Abbott), Tuesday, 13 July 2010 20:52 (sixteen years ago)
pretty sure I have used Abbott's method and it works
― sarahel, Tuesday, 13 July 2010 20:52 (sixteen years ago)
I used to clean my guinea pigs' cages that way. It got rid of everything.
