Our cat was diagnosed with diabetes on Saturday. We have to give him insulin injections 2x/day. It's actually easier than giving him a pill, though.

neurological bandwidth doctor (Hunt3r), Monday, 15 March 2010 22:58 (sixteen years ago)

I'm sorry to hear that Hunt3r, though glad it got caught. Our cat Drac is diabetic, but we've got it under control just through his diet so far.

Jaq, Monday, 15 March 2010 23:14 (sixteen years ago)

:(

what do you feed him?

shite new answers (cutty), Monday, 15 March 2010 23:46 (sixteen years ago)

I had a cat with kidney failure that I had to give subcutaneous fluids to twice a week. No fun!

kate78, Monday, 15 March 2010 23:51 (sixteen years ago)

cutty, if you're asking what Drac eats - he was on Purina DM for the past 2 years, both wet and kibble. It's one of the highest protein kibbles available, and Drac was all about the crunchy food. Recently though, they changed the formula of the wet food so it's mostly liver or something and now neither of our cats will eat it and Drac was starting to get symptomatic again from eating nothing but kibble. I started looking into alternatives and transitioned them to a raw diet this week. Which they both love so we'll be able to drop the kibble completely and get all grains out of their diet. I'm buying Primal for them right now, but also got a package of Instincts powder to mix up my own.

check out felines pride!

(raw food)

shite new answers (cutty), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 14:26 (sixteen years ago)

Cornish game hens for cats :) Thanks, that looks like a great alternative to Primal (which is full of vegetables and fruits, though no grains).

Jaq, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 15:01 (sixteen years ago)

i basically feed my cat a combination of wellness wet (chicken or turkey) and feline's pride mixed in

shite new answers (cutty), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 15:22 (sixteen years ago)

wellness is the best alternative to strictly raw

shite new answers (cutty), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 15:22 (sixteen years ago)

and please if any of you are thinking "it's just a cat lol just feed it dry food" i don't want to hear it

shite new answers (cutty), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 15:23 (sixteen years ago)

i dont buy it so i dont know what its called, but i think its prescription food, he gets 1/2 wet and 1/2 dry.

neurological bandwidth doctor (Hunt3r), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 16:57 (sixteen years ago)

that was xpost to what what do u feed obv.

neurological bandwidth doctor (Hunt3r), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 16:57 (sixteen years ago)

will say, he was seriously having a hard time. i'd find him on the bed zonked out, he wasnt too responsive. he'd just rest his little chin on my hand and close his eyes. didnt even resist getting into the carrier.

neurological bandwidth doctor (Hunt3r), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:00 (sixteen years ago)

our kitty has renal failure and gets special food FROM FRANCE.

quincie, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:04 (sixteen years ago)

I mean I think Michael White would eat this stuff.

quincie, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:04 (sixteen years ago)

It is made of goose livers t/f?

Ask foreigners and they will tell you the gospel comes from America. (Laurel), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:06 (sixteen years ago)

more like stinky cheese iirc

quincie, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 17:11 (sixteen years ago)

poor drac :(

shite new answers (cutty), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 21:10 (sixteen years ago)

I mean I think Michael White would eat this stuff.

I always laugh when I think of the stuff my cats have eaten; quail, partridge, lobster, crab, various nibbles of charcuterie, stolen bites of macaron. One of our cats has a penchant for viennoiserie and will fight you for your croissant.

To return to cutty's remark, though, the old one needs wet food for the water content (he's 20 and undergoing the usual renal degradation and drinks all the time) but he's still awfully picky so I switch up the wet food all the time. Luckily there are lots of pet food stores in close radius around my house that have lots of wholistic cat food made by free-range hippies or whatever and he likes most of their food for a week or two before it get's switched out.

Il suffit de ne pas l'envier (Michael White), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 21:25 (sixteen years ago)

Drac's brother Morrie adores triple cream blue cheese, especially St. Agur. He also stole some truffled foie canard pate once - delicately licked each little bit of truffle clean though and left them on the floor.

Jaq, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 21:30 (sixteen years ago)

In French, wet cat food is called paté pour chat (paté for cats) and once the cat gets into the paté, regardless of what it's made of or who it was for, it becomes paté pour chat.

Il suffit de ne pas l'envier (Michael White), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 21:35 (sixteen years ago)

Our eldest cat loves triple cream brie and pretty much any other cheese she can get her little mitts on. She can even recognize the sound of someone unwrapping string cheese from another room and while in a deep sleep.

Jaq = Hunt3r's 'er outdoors?

shite new answers (cutty), Tuesday, 16 March 2010 21:45 (sixteen years ago)

I should probably say that I do not regularly feed my cat fancy cheeses (she has to have special food because she had a bladder stone a couple of years ago), but if we are eating fancy cheese I will give her a little bite as a treat because she's old and I love her and it makes her happy plus it's really cute when she does this little cat Ninja paw swipe where she keeps her head lower than the coffee table but hooks her paw across the surface trying to get at some cheese.

Jaq = Hunt3r's 'er outdoors?

no

I was just commiserating with Hunt3r on diabetic cat ownership.

Jaq, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 21:49 (sixteen years ago)

Jenny, I love that image :)

Jaq, Tuesday, 16 March 2010 21:49 (sixteen years ago)

tehresa, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 02:38 (sixteen years ago)

tell him he hit 51 SBs and is temp-banned

I made a giant batch of raw cat food this weekend. It's disgusting glop, 4 lbs of ground organic chicken thighs and 3/4 lb of ground chicken livers all mixed up with a cup of powdered supplements and 2 cups of water. They totally love it.

Jaq, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 03:06 (sixteen years ago)

that is awesome! my mom has been feeding horatio homemade food but i guess she left the livers separate because he will eat everything else and turn his nose up at the liver!

tehresa, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 03:09 (sixteen years ago)

I'm probably going to keep buying the frozen stuff from Primal or maybe try that one cutty linked to that would have to ship from the bay area, once I've used up all the supplement powder. It cost more to make it myself than buy the little frozen bricks. Sold all the unopened cans of prescription food back to the vet on Saturday - nice to not have to deal with that smelly stuff anymore tbh. Horatio doesn't know what he's missing, mmmm chicken livers. I made the rest of the package up into paté pour des personnes, with shallots and Cockspur rum.

Jaq, Wednesday, 31 March 2010 03:24 (sixteen years ago)

my cat seriously loves the raw stuff, she goes nuts for it. the sound of her gobbling it up is hilarious. jaq you are brave for trying it yourself!
