in my experience, it is used by the worst writers, to gussy up the worst writing.

seriously i almost never notice it, i think i use the two words interchangeably in my head

or if i use them in different contexts i guess it's purely for auditory reasons based on the words around them

I probably didn't have a problem with it until I started subbing writers covering prog music

It's not common in US English, but I think there's a slight differentiation for UK speakers. See: Among/Amongst. I avoid the '..st' endings these days because I know it annoys non-Britishers, but really if it sounds right I have no problem with it.

P sure theres a tone/context that requires whilst, tho it may exclusively be heard on bbc history programmes or something

whilst is considered obsolete by most subs, ime. i would always change it to while.

I've always given britishes a pass for whilst. If Vyvyan can say it, so can everyone else over there.

as a british among britishes, i don't think i ever rly hear ppl use 'whilst'. it is a little unwieldy for most sentences. the other '...st' endings get more airtime iirc.

i wonder how the local usage of "while" to mean "to" as in "i'm working from 8 while 5" impacts on the way i use "whilst"?

in that you'd use 'whilst' to differentiate while-meaning-at-the-time-when (or while-meaning-although) from while-meaning-until?

I didn't think I had a problem with 'whilst' but I just searched a 137,000-word document spanning four years of mostly reviews and it only appears once so maybe I have internalised its fannydanglitude
