I have a theory that you can generally tell how far you are from the subway in queens and brooklyn by the number of american flags you see

Do people steal the flags, then run down into the subways?
― how's life, Monday, 30 July 2012 09:10 (eleven years ago) link
I think it's more that historically, conservative middle/working class neighborhoods fought to keep subways out. Iatee can probably correct me if I'm wrong about that, but he probably can't write a five paragraph explanation because he's on his iphone.
― Will Chave (Hurting 2), Monday, 30 July 2012 11:53 (eleven years ago) link
I think you can say that's broadly true, true in some places and more 'would have fought, as similar neighborhoods have, and so it was never a thing to fight' in most. prob a bigger factor is the sorting that happens on its own - new immigrants / young people less interested in moving to those neighborhoods, so they don't de-archiebunkerfy.
― iatee, Monday, 30 July 2012 12:31 (eleven years ago) link
Yeah that makes sense. Also if you work at, say, a port, or in an industrial zone, you're more likely to want to live somewhere inexpensive with houses and where you can have a car, and that comports with the whole blue-collar flag-displaying demographic I guess.
― Will Chave (Hurting 2), Monday, 30 July 2012 13:33 (eleven years ago) link
so why don't people display american flags near subway stops?
― how's life, Monday, 30 July 2012 13:35 (eleven years ago) link
or at subway sandwich shops
― lag∞n, Monday, 30 July 2012 13:38 (eleven years ago) link
Because people steal the flags, then run down into the subways.

there's a joke here about Whiney and flag posts in here somewhere that I'm too lazy to compose right now
― seapluspluspunk (loves laboured breathing), Monday, 30 July 2012 14:11 (eleven years ago) link
One is more likely to encounter the flags of other countries while walking in a neighborhood that is serviced by subway stops. Proven: subway stops are un-American.
― Virginia Plain, Monday, 30 July 2012 15:25 (eleven years ago) link
post 9/11 a lot of immigrant families took to hanging flags in front of their homes, outside their businesses and mosques as a way of self-identifying as americanat least that was queens. never went away.
― I dont even know that I think this sucks per se (forksclovetofu), Monday, 30 July 2012 15:36 (eleven years ago) link
we dont need to turn this into a NYC subway thread but the neighborhoods in question are the ones w/o mosques and w/ mostly 2nd/3rd gen ethnic whites
― iatee, Monday, 30 July 2012 16:02 (eleven years ago) link
I like to say that you can tell you are close to a subway when you see flags and mosques, but not when you just see flags
― Will Chave (Hurting 2), Monday, 30 July 2012 16:06 (eleven years ago) link

another good indicator is when you see korean restaurants near subway stairs, you are near a subway, but if you just see korean restaurants, you are probably in korea

I think something about the college application/essay-writing process has fucked up a whole generation. Like all these people are out looking for the slightest 'experience' to happen to them so they can blog about it.

did previous generations not write essays and apply to college? idgi
― reductio ad burzum (flopson), Monday, 13 August 2012 00:32 (eleven years ago) link
nah they just got in based on legacies, SAT scores, etc.
also nowadays college is super-competitive like never before, kids feel like if they didn't go to china and intern as red cross nurses or master suzuki piano level 99 they're bigass losers.
― the late great, Monday, 13 August 2012 00:46 (eleven years ago) link
o ya ok i've heard about these from american friends. i am in college right now but didn't have to write an essay, they still admit people based on legacy here thank god
― reductio ad burzum (flopson), Monday, 13 August 2012 00:52 (eleven years ago) link
well i think part of the issue here is that legacies are still in effect for competitive colleges *and* they're gradually de-emphasizing test scores / grades in favor of "well rounded" students
when i was applying to colleges, oh, about 18 years ago they were talking the same nonsense, i pretty much got in cal based on an astronomical SAT score. otherwise everyone i know who got into "good schools" had great grades and some combination of heavy-duty academic internship type experiences, varsity athletics or student leadership activities
the thing is - and i have no idea why this idea hasn't taken root - you really don't even need to go to a prestigious undergraduate school to get a good job. you can go to a combo of community college and state school, get kickass grades there, and then go to a prestigious graduate program. but i dunno, everyone thinks their kids need to go to harvard off the bat or they're just screwed for life.

are you in college or "college"
― catbus otm (gbx), Monday, 13 August 2012 01:12 (eleven years ago) link
