four years pass...

So apparently, lots of English people have no idea what plantains are.

This is kind of mind-boggling to me.

I know! But I wouldn't know where to get them in my town.

Well... I ask because, I said to OfficeBoy that bananas did not count as fruit (and he tried to out-clever me by saying "no, they are herbs") so I said "what about plantains?" as I was eating fried plantains at the time. And he was like "WTF are plantains? Never heard of them." So I tried to offer him some, and he was revolted.

But then when I said something about that on twitter, all these people started saying they didn't know what they were, either? How can you not know what plantains are?

I started eating them in NYC because they were kind of standard bodega food. But there's a Trinidad roti stall in Croydon that sells them.

I absolutely love them, but I imagine that they are worse for you than chips. :-/

pleasant plantains

i've never had too much luck with making these, what's the proper ripeness you want for 1) mashed plantains and 2) fried mashed plantains and 3) fried plantain crisps?

also no matter how you do them (poorly, well, traditionally, nouveau) these are pretty much always going to taste and feel super-starchy compared to bananas and potatoes right?
