She has taken to a small toy bucket, the kind kids take to the beach, and carries it around. You should hear her going up stairs.

i was walking my dog this afternoon in the pouring rain, and another dog ran up out of nowhere from behind. no idea how long she had been running. she came right up, no leash or collar, but friendly. i looked around for the owner for a minute but there was no one around and it was pouring rain. i managed to get her back into my building, which was an ordeal because she had no collar to grab hold of and wasn't very obedient. then i took her into the anti-cruelty shelter because our place is just too small to have an extra dog, even for a night or two. she was in pretty good health (a little skinny) and i'm pretty sure she was housetrained because when i took her back outside on the way to the car she peed immediately. she knew how to sit, too, and didn't freak out around my cat. the shelter was pretty confident that she had just escaped from a house or something, rather than a stray. she's about a year old. hopefully they can reunite her with her family (we're posting a message on a local facebook group and will put up signs nearby as soon as it stops raining). but if not, i'm pretty sure she'll be adopted soon. she is really sweet.

and good in the car!

she’s beautiful. i’m so torn between getting a pup from a shelter or a specific breed.

i strongly recommend getting a shelter pup. very rewarding to rescue a pup that will be yr pal for life

That's a good dog, nath! here's mine: https://mltshp-cdn.com/r/1F4AB

the little one was only 6 months old and has since gotten a bit bigger (but not much), and the big one is now all fluffed up and magnificent in her winter coat. She's the softest, fluffiest black and white cloud, and I can never stop petting her

People like you saved my life, got a call from the vet that my dog was found on the high street wandering around in Tesco’s and some Messiah had walked him over.

tsrobodo, Sunday, 10 March 2019 22:26 (five years ago) link

yeah, i just know i would want someone to do the same for my dog if she ever got in a pickle

but of course, because internet, not one, not two, but THREE different people yelled at my wife on the facebook post because they were angry that we took the dog to the anti-cruelty society on the same day instead of spending more time trying to find the owner

but i'm there are fuckups (Karl Malone), Sunday, 10 March 2019 22:31 (five years ago) link

yah, fuck the internet and anybody that uses it for any reason, doing anything at all out of your way in those circumstances is life saving

tsrobodo, Sunday, 10 March 2019 22:45 (five years ago) link

you did a good thing, Karl, ignore those people <3

that said, when I was a teenager a skinny sad-eyed half-grown cat moved into our shed through the ill-fitting door. our cat didn't get on with it so letting it in the house didn't work out, but we made it a bed in the shed and fed it and put posters everywhere locally - and we lived in a small town with only one supermarket, pre-internet-shopping, so we thought surely the poster would get seen there. after 2 weeks we took it to the shelter and the next day the owners called, and got v cross because the shelter wouldn't give it back until they paid for a medical and neutering, and they said they couldn't afford it and we'd "stolen" their cat and they didn't want it neutered, and I felt bad for that situation

(but they also seemed needlessly aggro and not v interested in the cat and had a lot of noisy kids and a big noisy aggressive dog that we thought probably scared the cat away? and it seemed maybe red-flag-ish that they had gone two weeks without responding to posters on lamp-posts right on their street? so I was also glad that now the shelter was going to vet them and their house and we didn't have to make the decisions tbh. kitty was cute and young and would prob have been rehomed no problem.)

anyway that was a long rambling story, I forgot about that cat, but thank you Karl for doing a good thing *fistbumpemoji*

I moved, my new house is really lovely and there's a fenced-in backyard. Every time I let the dog out there for a period of time, she comes in smelling like burnt fur. Or mild skunk. I don't understand why.
