that sounds like something i'd want to read.

That one guy that quit, Sunday, 3 June 2007 18:30 (eleven years ago) Permalink

rather than sending it, i shall describe it for you.

A single horn (trumpet?) sounds.

Flourish of violins and other assorted strings. A low sound, much like a tuba, is also detectable.

The horn sounds again, a few semitones lower. It begins to play a slow tune.

Enter piano and some rain effects. The low tuba thing goes on.

Ethereal moans and wail permeate the song.

Suddenly, an oscillating, windy pumping noise fills the speakers, dying away as soon as it arrives. As it returns for the second time, however, a bluesy guitar riff bursts in unexpectedly.

Along with a distorted harmonica.

Some muted percussion is also audible.

Hollis begins to sing: "Oh yeah, the world's turned upside down..."

Shall I continue?

it may seem silly to ask about something this mundane but i always wanna know. There's this certain "glass" sound that can be heard in many Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis productions ... How was it created?
-- startrekman, Wednesday, 4 May 2005 04:15 (2 years ago) Link

i know that song inside and out and i don't know which keyb line you are talking about. the long high line or one of the more staccato runs?
-- g e o f f (gcannon), Wednesday, 4 May 2005 04:21 (2 years ago) Link

no not a keyboard sound but a drum machine sound, theres this certain "glass sound" that comes from a drum machine of some sort.
-- startrekman, Wednesday, 4 May 2005 04:23 (2 years ago) Link

as in the whole drum pallette sounds "glassy" or there is one particular sound that sounds like glass (breaking?)? you're pretty inarticulate for a formalist.

there is one sound from a drum machine that sounds like glass Mr Geoff.

No, it's not made with blood diamonds, that's one thing he insisted on and made sure were sourced appropriately. I don't know the guy enough to call wanker on him, but I know he's done some nice things for other friends which alleviate the potential for wankery which is so obviously there.

Ran into one of my artworld stately homo friends last night, who said he'd boycotted the opening and now heard that there had been these really OTT goodie bags handed out to the celebrity art tourists who did go. Despite these being rammed full of luxury goods he did not regret his decision in the least because the work and whole phenomenon of Damien bling was large steaming pile of wank.

If you think no one calls her out, you havn't been paying attention for long enough -- there's a history of sparring over this exact topic, but you know, for everything there is a season...maybe the time is ripe to revisit all possible permutations of this stage play. Program, please!

Line up for your late passes here. Sorry I didn't post this one at the time:

Yes, Houston, which at least since Katrina is home to more New Orleanians than any other major city, is by some measures the most diverse city in America. It's substantially larger in day and nighttime population than Dallas, and denser and more populous in its truly urban interior, with a larger residential population in its downtown core, though the latter two may be marginal differences, and Dallas evidently has a superior transit system and perhaps more coherent neighborhoods. In addition to having a superior food scene, I'd judge from afar that Houston tops Dallas in the arts, though that's probably debatable.

Stevolende, Wednesday, 11 July 2018 23:03 (five months ago) Permalink

supposedly:
- Clanger wrote it for, or inspired by, Wyatt's singing
- dissatisfied, asked Elvis to do a pass on the lyrics
- Bedders, who plays on it, said Wyatt wasn't considered until Elvis wrote the Shipbuilding version, and it was going to be a protest EP with four different singers doing versions of Langer's song
- Wyatt was sent an Elvis demo by Geoff Travis
- Clangwinstello produce Wyatt version (Elvis on BVs, Nieve on piano, Clanger on organ, Bedders on bass)
- released August 1982
- re-released April 1983, becomes hit
- Elvis version with Chet Baker released August 1983 on Punch The Clock
