The thing is, when I think of the zillion records I HAVE sold and traded over the years, It's hard to remember what the hell they all were. I had a store in Philly once and I sold about a 1000 of my own records there and all I can remember selling are my Crass singles and some Orb albums! If I really thought about it i could remember more probably, but still...

aww, so sad. even my Merry Crassmas single. It's true though. I traded in a couple hundred cds about 6 months ago and I already can't remember what they were. Except the Animal Collective!! I do remember getting rid of that one.

the screaming trees put an ep out on sub pop during the Tad era and they outweight the Tad band by a good quarter ton.

"Submission" is great! Most danceable throb on the album, total proto-PiL/post-Skynyrd ("The Needle and the Spoon," ha!) dirge (better than "You're Crazy" or "Anything Goes" for sure).
I forget what "New York City" even sounds like, though!

don't love it, but i think it's not bad -- especially the song about how the dolphins make him cry, and that quotes "idiot wind" or whatever that dylan song about killing a man in italy and inheriting a million bucks was. also the song that sounds like "letter b" off of *sesame street* is okay. i haven't played it in a couple years, so i kinda forget the rest. but he's a pretty good singer, in the dobie gray tradition. (best defense of the band ever, and gutsiest, was by i believe daniel smith - a lead review in *vibe*, i think!! she basically argued that they were a soul band, which kinda makes sense.)

(and yeah, i meant *cracked rearview.* i suppose they might have some earlier indie albums maybe, right? i never heard those. *cracked reareview* has a pretty funny title, too, come to think of it.)

Anthony is totally right about "soothing." It's my new age record of the year, I think - which is saying a lot, because this was a really good year for gothic scandinavian metal, among other muzaks. (Wolf Eyes are better than most such stuff thanx to lots of cute little clanks and clunks, which I swear come off like hooks to me. Though it's not like I can remember many of them when the CD's not on.)

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 11 November 2004 02:43 (nineteen years ago) link

But there is always a slew of great ambient Norse metal out there. Don't you guys like Green Carnation? And most great black metal is totally waves of noise ambient goodness, you know?

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 11 November 2004 02:44 (nineteen years ago) link

I don't know much about black metal, unfortunately. There was a point in my life where I liked Emperor, Mayhem, some Burzum and like.. Dimmu Borgir. Maybe approaching it now, I'd see it differently. At that point (early high school) it didn't have the melody i found and enjoyed in punk. i haven't really ever looked back at black metal. i should. i ought to re-read those threads where siegbran makes big lists.

Ian John50n (orion), Thursday, 11 November 2004 02:47 (nineteen years ago) link

It's just like anything else. Ya gotta sift thru a lot of crap to find the good stuff. I actually like bad metal too though, so it's not that painful for me. Have you ever heard Maudlin Of The Well, Ian? They were American. Put out three records on Dark Symphonies. Great death metal/classical/free improv/space with a dash of confessional folk/emo. Cool shit. Fron massachusetts!

i like their big ballads better than the horn freakouts that still show their "fusion" origins. but some people i respect, if not totally identify with, really like those early, would-be jazzbo records.

i think there's even a peter cetera solo single i like, but i can't remember the name.
