I have experienced definitive proof that I really don't cause the majority of problems with me on the nets.

I was sitting with a friend in another friend's Cafe'. Sitting talking, me dominating the conversation with en endless stream of bullshit, sometimes relevant. The usual.
After being there for over an hour myself, and almost exactly one hour at the same time, some guy I didn't even notice and HAVE NEVER SEEN BEFORE IN MY LIFE walks up to me and says, "Excuse me, sir, but I've been sitting here for the past 10 minutes trying to figure out how to tell you how you've been ruining my food in this fine establishment, but then I realised you have to live with yourself, so I'm gonna leave."
I've paraphrased a bit, but only a bit.
THREE PEOPLE then looked at me, just as shocked, and said things to the effect of "What was that about?"
"I was gonna ask you!" was my reply.

My only guess is my voice was too loud. However, I eat there about twice a week, I have several aquaintences who do the same, and this is nothing new, 3 months, no complaints. one of the "What the hell was that?"s came from one of those people.
I've talked with strangers there, no complaints.

This guy looked like every stereotype of what I would call "Sardonic Angry Indie Fuckwad #3."
Carefully mussed hair, carefully trimmed 'unkempt' beard, semi-tight black pseudo-politcal t-shirt, tight black jeans, 15lbs overweight, a close-talker from listening to too much shitty musicloud in their car/headphones, hoping someone will ask them about it.
OK, I inferred that lat part's reason...
In any case, he was a jackoff, and this proves that my attitude repels people I don't want anything to do with, and gains me the friendship of people whose friendship I want.
Both in extremes, apparantly.

The thing that I find the most funny is how rehearsed his little speech was.

So, my theories as to what his problem was:
I was too loud. I'm aware I can unknowinly get a big high in volume, and will attempt to reign it in if asked.

My topics somehow bothered him. I think I was talking about just random stuff. Anime, movie quotes, hot chicks, blah blah blah. I haven't hung out with that friend in a while, so It was pretty random. No idea what could have offended him.

He took my jokes seriously, and serious comments as jokes. Everyone I've met that I don't want to talk to does this. My parents included. They also never ask for clarification.

I was dressed like I had more money than him and he took me as a rich asshole invading his nice little getaway. Ummm...No. Also, I didn't tell off the church group for talking about...church shit last Thursday. Granted it wasn't hard to ignore, as they were probably quieter than I alone was, and were a group of six.

The confirmation that it's Jackasses that instantly dislike me made me feel good, and only the first theory is something I feel the need to really work on.

Overall, NOTHING could have ruined the high I've been riding on since I got a PERSONAL THANK YOU FROM THE GUITARIST IN ONE OF MY FAVORITE BANDS!!! People I genuinely admire the skills of can still give me a 'starstruck' feeling.
I've met really famous people. Seeing them in 3D is a bit jarring, but they're just people.
People I admire intimidate me because their opinions will matter to me, on some level, and I don't know them well enough to know how to act around them.

Hey. This that is Dan Perry:

How about the fact that NO ONE ELSE HAD ANY IDEA WHAT HIS PROBLEM WAS AND LIKES ME THERE.
How about the fact that your problems with me started because you THOUGHT I WAS TALKING TO YOU AND WASN'T and when I told you that I didn't know who you were, you got even more angry, despite the fact that like most people on ILX you changed your name often.

There are maybe 3 people in the world I'd punch in the face if I met them.
I'm glad you live in Boston.

You're the only ONLY person who's ever made me angry enough that I wanted to use a racial slur just to make them feel bad. I haven't, but I briefly felt that way.
It's just never worth it.

If this isn't Dan perry: DON'T SKIM LONG POSTS.

Sorry for the quick misdirected anger I relseased last night. I didn't expect such behavior of even HIDERE. I just didn't expect a stranger to come in and act exactly how this humanoid had.
Now I felt as though MY sanctuary had been invaded.
"Kind of undercutting your point, there GZeus... AHEM."
I was attemptin to express the degree to which the number of times he's insulted me(this one WOULD HAVE been the straw the broke the camel's back). I would never say such a thing.
I once briefly tried to figure out would be the word equivalent to a punch in the face. That was the closest thing and I thought "Yeah, but it's WORSE and never worth it."

That was the first time since I thought of that I'd wanted to punch someone in the face and didn't have the ability.
Wouldn't do anyway, probably(a criminal record's not good for those who want to emigrate).

And yes, I got the idea from Michael Richards "Wow, he must have been really mad. Guess he wanted to hurt their feelings alot. What a moron." He accomplished his goal. it was a fucking stupid idea.

I never said I WOULD. Tell me HONESTLY that you've never thought something you know you'd never say.
Hm?
Try it.

Also, once somone tells me I'm worthless and should die, I don't feel any need to be nice to them.
I realise my reaction was out-of-line.
I could (but don't have that kind of time, I'm preparing for a trip) make list of the insults, rude comments, unsolicited criticism, sardonic backhanded crap, etc. that culminated with a completely unwarranted CALL FOR MY DEATH on this thread by Daniel Perry, whom up to that point I doubt I'd said one word to.
He hasn't stopped.
I HAVE NEVER RESPONDED SINCE THEN.
This holier-than-thou attitude and the idea "I don't like you, so you're worthless" is the same thing I got from that guy in the cafe'.
Neither person had ever had a conversation with me. Neither had ever spoken to me. Neither had any reason to think they had proper information to form any sort of opinion on me.
For one to say "..you have to live with yourself" suggesting that's a bad thing and another to say "you're a worthless waste of air" suggesting that I DIE... Well neither can be said to make me feel good.
The fact that this actually hurt my feelings on a fundamental level(long ass story as to why) and
angered me viscerally as a result is another reason that would come to mind. "What's the only thing that could hurt this bully's feelings? ....yeah but that's a horrible idea...FUCK!"
I'm not trying to justify my going off here. Just trying to explain it a bit.

If an asshole told you to die, then followed you around insulting you, and happened to be of ANY ethnic group, even your own,, whatever word is (in)appropriate wouldn't flash through your head?
I came closer to saying it(I voiced the thought of thinking about maybe almost saying it but not doing it because it would be a terrible idea to seriously consider........) that some may have, but I've still never said it. And never would.
I wouldnt even tell someone to die, because that's an insanely unbalanced and terrible thing to do.

Again, I'm sorry for this event. It was uncalled for and waaay out-of line, but I don't take well to unprovoked attacks by total strangers.
If I had been in a worse mood, I would have punched that guy in the cafe out cold.

I understand you've known Dan longer, but I also hope you told him it's not nice to call for the death of people back when that happened.

Thsi whole incident has left ne nauseous. I'm gonn take a tums.

elmo argonaut, Wednesday, 14 March 2007 19:16 (seventeen years ago) link

I know it's not much better.
But it's on the same level as saying you want someone to die.
Again, if you've never thought it, let me know.

I know I might get banned.
Note that Three times AFTER I'VE APOLOGISED he's antagonized me.

Not much of an apology, admittedly, but he doesn't deserve much, in my experience.

"I've spoken to yyou aybe twice..."
Yep. That and the altercation which you started for no apparant reason add up to make a decent list.
Never said it was very long.
"You follow my friends around"
They can't be other people's friends? How far will you narcissistic solipsism go? I don't say anything to you, you say something to me. "Who's that? Oh well. I'll reply to the person I was talking to" you take that reply as an insult towards YOU. I then ask "Who ARE you??"
And post "What the hell was that?" here. You follow up with a shouting insulting post.
I post "What the hell?" here, and you tell me I should die.
That alone would warrant people holding me back had you done it in person.

You are a disease.
I have no idea how someone like you could possibly associate with such good people.
Sardonic, sarcastic, and self-centered. The only possible reason I can think of is you seem quite intelligent.

Do I have a tendency to overreact? No.
People on the internet overstep the bounds of civil discourse to easily, and too many people accept that.
Done. I'm done.

If this is how you act in person, you WILL get beat down some day. That fact makes me happy.

If this is not how you act in person, you're a phony poseur internet toughguy, and not worth your weight in dogshit.

Goodbye, all.

what is the "altercation" between gzus and dan that keeps getting mentioned?

It started on ILG; I kept trying to tell him how to approach talking to Tom and Jon on threads like that FFXII thread and he kept going "I'm not talking to YOU" in increasingly hostile words. Finally, he came to a Hastings thread and started bitching to my high school friends about how I was slandering him on ILG and making his life difficult, at which point I went, "Actually I was trying to help you but you're too stupid/crazy/annoying to understand; fuck off you worthless waste of space". He then went on a rampage and started emailing me, to which I answered "Don't email me" and stopped talking to him. This was probably about... five months ago? Maybe more? In the intervening time, I believe I have responded to him once (he wrote on the Hastings thread that incoherency annoyed him and I couldn't resist asking "so you're annoyed by your own posts...?") and talked about him never, yet somehow I have been on a hateful stalker crusade of following him around (as opposed to him following my friends around) and wishing him dead ever since then that has bothered him so much it's made him want to be a racist.

Apparently he does the exact same type of thing to people in person.

dont take it out of context:

Libertarians are what republicans used to pretend to be.
members of the libertarian party is probably just angry white men.
Well, that mentality seems to be prevalent among those whom I think would join.
And what do you man by not have thought things through thoroughly" shadowcat?
I find when people say things like that they mean "accept political parties, if you don't you're wasting your time!" or "The government needs to interfere on behalf of (insert X whiney group who has no right to complain) because they're too lazy to get off their ass and do something other than whine!"
I had this LOONG discussion wih a very leftist woman. it was about the smoking bans.
"but what about the people who don't smoke?"
Who's making them go there?
"Where else will they go?"
A non=smoking restaraunt.
"Those didn't exist."
Hahahaa! Yeah they did. they were all over.
"You probably don't remember, but ost places were either smoking all over or the smoking section was poorly divided."
Yeah, I remember, and whle some places were poorly set up, newer restaraunts were very different.
"circular argument!"
No.
"Why should I have do deal with the smoke?"
You don't. Go somewhere else.
"Why should I have to?"
Because the owner of a private establishment has chosen not to abolish a certain legal activity.
"Where else should I go?"
That loop continued for about 10 minutes.
Eventually I suggested the alternative of getting together and starting a business that didn't have smoking.
"Well that's really hard!"(more or less)
Name a business that's easy and guaranteed, and I'll punch you for being stupid(isn't what I said, but it's what I meant).
"But a non smoking restaraunt would fail!"
Well first, that would show a lack of interest by the public for that kind of restaraunt, and second we're sitting in a restaraunt that's been non-smoking from day one and it's doing just fine.
"but what about the health risks for employees?"
at that point I gave up and didn't say "Who forced them to work there? NO ONE likes to work in food service, so they've probably got jack for skills and shouldn't be picky!"
I did however touch on the idea of PRECEDENT.

SO. if you're calling me an idealist, thank you.
If you just think that the government should be like an overprotective christian parent and watch and guide our every move, try making choices for yourself for a whole month. No book can tell you what to do, you cannot ask for advice. You will make every decision for yourself.

Why don't you like the Sex Pistols? Because they were "constructed" by the owner of the a store? Because they were a boy band? Well the shop was called SEX and what makes a band of boys unpunk? Because Sid Vicious couldn't play bass? Vicious wasn't even on this album. So give it a break. And you know what else? Johnny Rotten had one of the most punk names ever. You know what else? Joe Strummer was inspired by the Sex Pistols. Know what else? Buzzcocks/Clash/Sex Pistols Anarchy shows are some of the most amazing live sets ever. And I wasn't even there - I only heard the bootlegs. And! And! And!

I knew Gzeus personally. I've occasionally come to this thread over the years to remember just what the fuck.

She's out as trans now. I just came across something online talking about how after you transition, you still have a lot of work to do to unpack whatever issues you had before. Probably somewhat predictably, at least in the ~2016-2018 era that I followed her on Twitter, she was professing that it had solved all her problems, i.e. everyone that stressed her out was at fault for THAT reason now, and also that was why she was entirely blameless for stressing out the people she stressed out. e.g. a family member didn't IMMEDIATELY support her transition, so she said openly under her well-known username that this family member had a particular venereal disease and particular substance abuse issues. She said something about how she knew she was "really trans" because all her male RPG characters had been one-dimensional, might-makes-right assholes, psychologically in the same breath as when she was talking (again, openly under her well-known username) about how if she was doing sound at shows, if she felt an artist disrespected her, she'd make them sound good in the monitors and bad in the PA so that the audience would think they sucked and they wouldn't know why, which, y'know, it didn't make her "feel strong" to think about that was doing some part to ruin the audience's night and the reputation of the venue, so she just didn't--she was just being a one-dimensional, might-makes-right asshole. (NOTE: I'm not saying she's "not really trans"--I'm saying that particular aspect of her personality didn't indicate so at that particular time.)

She'd always done that kind of thing a lot. She likes to think of herself as very observant and good at pattern recognition, I think because times that's gone well for her stand out in her mind and she really likes to emphasize them psychologically, but she also thinks she's entirely free to arbitrarily, completely ignore all evidence to the contrary by everyone else, because it doesn't make her feel good. There's a book on my list I heard the author talk about on NPR, Strangers to Ourselves: Discovering the Adaptive Unconscious, where he said if everyone gives you different advice, you should probably stick to what you believe about yourself, but if the advice is pretty much unanimous, chances are other people see something about you that you don't. My point is Gzeus often complains about why EVERYONE treats her this way or that, and constantly does all kinds of mental gymnastics, convincing no one but herself, why everyone in the world is wrong except for her and, if she's feeling particularly expansive, whoever she arbitrarily decides to support, because it arbitrarily makes her feel strong (while simultaneously objectively weakening her, e.g. she was still BRAGGING about having very few followers as though that somehow "proves" she's in a rarefied air and not that she just doesn't have her thumb on the pulse of... anyone).

I could go on, but there are limits to taste and I don't want to get too personal.
