fernow's set at this year's subcurrent was my fave - i thought his whole schtick/performance was totally compelling conceptually sound and scary, very powerful in all sorts of ways - but he gets TWO bad live reviews in this month's Wire - so i wondered what the noize brigade here thought - esp. keen to hear abt other performances by prurient you may have seen, or what recs by him you wld suggest i dig

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Thursday, 25 May 2006 19:21 (sixteen years ago) link

honestly the couple times i saw him i was back of whatever room it was, and wasn't paying attention. so, it's not that compelling?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 25 May 2006 19:25 (sixteen years ago) link

wow maybe he was quieter when you saw him i dunno, i expect you've seen a lot more of this shit than i have hstencil, but just volume-wise his music seemed hard to ignore that night in glasgow - chris corsano was standing in front of me and he was wearing plugs the pussy - prurient performed w/ his back to the audience, miles davis style

same review of subcurrent in the wire also disses dilloway's solo perf which again i enjoyed but truly was VERY loud in places - by way of a climax he seemed to just unleash this huge bass throb that made the ceiling shake, awesome

Ward Fowler (Ward Fowler), Thursday, 25 May 2006 19:42 (sixteen years ago) link

hey, corsano's no pussy, dude.

the wire sucks.

his best work is the "we set off in high spirits" tape. of his more available stuff, i'm a fan of the CD on Truculent, "Troubled Sleep."

Haven't heard his stuff on Load though, aside from the Kites split which I sold back.

I like the history of aids.

Jeff. (Jeff), Friday, 26 May 2006 02:30 (sixteen years ago) link

loud doesn't impress me.

i'd rather corsano kept his hearing so he can play more drums.

i was just kidding abt corsano being a pussy

The new album Bermuda Drain is quite good . Really different from his previous releases and kinda what I wished Cold Cave sounded like...

Been loving Bermuda Drain tonight. He has a lot of records. What else has the same elegiac, symphonic synth sound?

kraudive, Saturday, 23 February 2013 22:47 (ten years ago) link

Cos I've heard a lot of the earlier noise stuff and I'm not as much of a fan of that. It has its place but Bermuda Drain really sounds beautiful.

the new record on blackest ever black, "trough the window", is the one to listen if you like BD.

I listened to part of the Prurient one and it's definitely music to play in your house as you pass out candy to trick-or-treaters on the porch lol

As indie ppl experience a moment of collective outrage as Maus + Pink are outed as Republicans, I remain curious about the widespread indifference to Dominick Fernow's promotion of music made by a dude who literally lived with the Nazi who wrote the Turner Diaries.

thats funny i almost revived this thread last night to talk about how much i like the jumping tiger demo and the casablanca flamethrower record on tesco (a label with extremely fashy leanings afaict).

lots of akitsa records for sale on the hospital productions website rn.

adam, Saturday, 9 January 2021 16:21 (two years ago) link

xp - uh, this feels disingenuous to me - like, "why are people indifferent to the fact that water is wet!"

sarahell, Saturday, 9 January 2021 19:17 (two years ago) link

not even that -- like, "water is wet" is something relevant to everyone. The issue of Dom's fascist adjacency is more like, "why are the masses not complaining that the sewage treatment plan off of exit 45 smells really bad during evening rush hour?"

circa1916, Saturday, 9 January 2021 23:28 (two years ago) link

Dan could not be more sincere in wondering why this guy gets the coverage he does.

jaywbabcock, Saturday, 9 January 2021 23:34 (two years ago) link

Does he get a lot of coverage these days? Also as far as I know dude himself is not an actual right winger. Worth arguing the ethics of promoting music put out by dubious people, yeah. And the genres he trades in are rooted in transgressive iconography, though I feel he’s moved beyond that. I think if he was spouting shit like Ariel Pink was he’d be equally told to fuck off forever.

circa1916, Saturday, 9 January 2021 23:58 (two years ago) link

I don't follow this stuff enough to know dude's profile these days. Maybe see Dan's Twitter thread for details.

Boyd Rice, a folk singer

how can someone be a watchdog against industrial noise fascists and not have a clear idea of who Boyd Rice is??
