I actually know someone who liked Garden State. He tried to force me to listen to the soundtrack, even, because it was important to him or something like that. So I went and saw the movie and was like what in the holy fuck is this girly nonsense shit.

Allyzay Rofflesberger (allyzay), Friday, 3 March 2006 15:44 (fourteen years ago) link

it's indietastic!

inert false cat (sleep), Friday, 3 March 2006 15:49 (fourteen years ago) link

Half the movie is bad indie songs being played with no diegetic sound at all.

R.I.P. Concrete Octopus ]-`: (ex machina), Friday, 3 March 2006 15:52 (fourteen years ago) link

Oh what the hell, I'll watch it. What I DON'T understand is how the writer/producer/and so on aren't being SUED for ripping off Rick Moody's first novel, and then completely defanging it. I mean, it's a kind of sloppy first novel and that's even if you LIKE Rick Moody, but PUHLEEZE...the movie? Not even.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 3 March 2006 15:54 (fourteen years ago) link

liking rick moody would be a capital crime, if i was king.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 3 March 2006 15:55 (fourteen years ago) link

I have a heart for GARDEN STATE, I read it right after moving to Jersey and was newly listening to all messy loud music courtesy of then-boyfriend and it had the bestest bestest paperback cover w/ a traffic light hanging against a truly virulent-green sky.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 3 March 2006 15:58 (fourteen years ago) link

dave grubbs would get a stay of execution because squirrel bait toured with g.g. allin.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 3 March 2006 16:00 (fourteen years ago) link

Also, I was taking the Bergen County line through Paterson/Passaic on a daily basis and looking into people's crappy backyards and half-fallen abandoned factories out of train windows and somehow it all fit together. That was a strange year.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 3 March 2006 16:02 (fourteen years ago) link

A terrible movie, even my wife hated it.

Adam Rice Lacucaracha (nordicskilla), Friday, 3 March 2006 16:43 (fourteen years ago) link

I liked the movie, though the ending was totally terrible.

I'm from New Jersey, and behind my house, in the woods, was a giant pit filled with deserted cranes. It was too rocky to build homes there and they couldn't get the cranes out. We used to climb the cranes.

Dan Selzer (Dan Selzer), Friday, 3 March 2006 17:38 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm sure if someone made a crappy movie about suburban North London filled with bad music and mawkish sentiments, I would love it too.

Adam Rice Lacucaracha (nordicskilla), Friday, 3 March 2006 17:41 (fourteen years ago) link

Dan that sounds awesomely dangerous.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 3 March 2006 17:42 (fourteen years ago) link

I mean, we used to climb the base of the water tower in our yard, but CRANES? That's like the hard stuff.

Am I allowed to ask what happened to the Concrete Octopus?

Adam Rice Lacucaracha (nordicskilla), Friday, 3 March 2006 17:46 (fourteen years ago) link

Jon, explain pls.

Laurel (Laurel), Friday, 3 March 2006 17:46 (fourteen years ago) link

how do yellow cards work? Because I see one does that mean I'm yellow carded for the entire board? Because I'm from New Jersey? Fact is, I LIKE Zach Braff, and I thought that was pretty good for a first movie, though the ending's bullshit sentimentality, and the excessive use of indie rock nearly ruined it for me. I like Scrubs, believe it or not, and I liked him on Arrested Development.

The cranes were very dangerous and rusty and we didn't climb up the arm, just into the drivers seat and on the treads. We joked about climbing all the way up, then we came back a few years later and the arm had fallen. I wonder if anyone heard it fall?

I remember hearing or reading an interview with Zach Braff when the movie came out, and he was saying something like, "A lot of the stuff in that movie, it really happened! Like a friend of mine was really working in a Vietnamese restaurant and this girl wanted bread!" I feel like I sat next to this guy in a creative writing class at Rutgers.
