HOLY FUCKING F RIFF CENTRAL INTERVIEWS BRAIN ENO EXCLUSIVE
world's greatest ambient pioneer

Brian Eno is a famous techno musician from United Kingdom. He has
made several techno records including Music For Airports, Another
Green World, Roxy Music's For Your pleasure, and several other techno
records for Talkking Heads, David Bowie and maxwell demon. In addition, he worked with the band U2, who wrote the rock song "Vertigo" but who are most famous for the famous black U2 iPod. (This is an iPod that is regular except it has red buttons and I think it is black. It costs more money than the regular iPod but less money than other iPods like the Iriver. The shuffle is the new ipod and that is cheap and white but doesn't have a screen.) Today Riff Central talks to Brain Eno about what it is like to work with famous bands and invent new music.

RIFF CENTRAL: YOU ARE AN AMBIENT PIONEER BUT BEFORE THAT YOU MADE AN ALBUM CALLED HERE COME WARM JETS

BRIAN ENO: YES

RIFF CENTRAL: THEN YOU MADE AN ALBUM CALLED MUSIC FOR AIRPORTS

BRIAN ENO: YES

RIFF CENTRAL: AND THEN YOU MADE THE ALBUM CALLED TAKING TIGER MOUNTIAN BY
STRATEGY.

BRIAN ENO: YES

RIFF CENTRAL: I'M ASSUMING THAT STRATEGY INVOLVED SOME SORT OF JET?

BRIAN ENO: I DONT REMEMBER. MAYBE. NO.

RIFF CENTRAL: YOU ARE MOST FAMOUS FOR WORKING WITH THE BAND U2 ON ROCK ALBUMS LIKE THE JOSHUA TREE AND ACTION BABY. WERE YOU HONORED TO WORK WITH SUCH A FAMOUS BAND

BRIAN ENO: CERTAINLY BUT THEY WERENT REALLY FAMOUS WHEN I WORKED WITH THEM

RIFF CENTRAL: ARE YOU SAYING YOU MADE U2 FAMOUS

BRIAN ENO: NO OF COURSE NOT! BUT JUST LIKE ANY NEW BAND THEY WERE UNKNOWN AT FIRST

RIFF CNETRAL: BUT THEY'R ENOT UNKNOWN NOW

BRIAN ENO: NO THEY ARE A VERY POPULAR BAND

RIFF CENTRAL: MORE POPULAR THAN YOU?

BRIAN ENO: YES

RIFF CENTRAL: MOVING ON, THE BAND U2 RECENTLY WORKED WITH APPLE IPODS TO MAKE THEIR OWN U2 IPOD. IT HAS RED BUTTONS AND IS BLACK, BUT COSTS MORE THAN REGULAR IPODS

BRIAN ENO: I DON'T UNDERSTAND YOUR QUESTION

RIFF CENTRAL: ARE YOU UPSET WITH THE PRICES OF THE IPOD U2 EDITION?

BRIAN ENO: NO

RIFF CENTRAL: ON THE BACK OF THE U2 IPOD THERE ARE SIGNATURES, BUT
NONE OF THEM ARE YOURS. TELL ME HOW YOU FELT WHEN YOU FIRST FOUND OUT U2 HAD KICKED YOU OUT OF YOUR OWN BAND

BRIAN ENO: I WAS NEVER IN THE BAND U2, I ONLY PRODUCED THEIR ALBUM

RIFF CENTRAL: YOU PRODUCED THE ALBUM YOURSELF?

BRIAN ENO: NO WITH ANOTHER PERSON

RIFF CENTRAL: ARE YOU WILLING TO GO ON RECORD SAYING THAT YOU GHOSTWROTE THE JOSHUA TREE AND ACTIONG BABY

BRIAN ENO: NO I AM NOT WILLING TO DO THAT

RIFF CENTRAL: OK. YOU ALSO MADE MUSIC THAT SOUNDS LIKE STUFF HAPPENING AROUND US.

BRIAN ENO: YES AMBIENT MUSIC. I MADE AMBIENT MUSIC WHEN I REALIZED MUSIC COULD BE LIKE WALLPAPER-- IT SURROUNDS YOU AND YOU DON'T PAY ATTENTION TO IT BECAUSE IT DOESN'T BRING ATTENTION TO ITSELF, BUT IF YOU GET REALLY CLOSE UP TO IT, YOU SEE ITS INTRICACIES, YOU SEE HOW IT'S STRUCTURED AND BEAUTIFUL

RIFF CENTRAL: WHY SHOULD PEOPLE BUY RECORDS THAT SOUND LIKE STUFF OUTSIDE. SHOULDN'T THEY JUST GO OUTSIDE?

BRIAN ENO: SURE, BUT SOME OF MY RECORDS SOUND INSIDE TOO. FOR INSTANCE, I TRIED TO MAKE MUSIC THAT COULD SOOTHE PEOPLE'S ANXIETIES ABOUT GETTING ON PLANES

RIFF CENTRAL: WAIT A SECOND. WHAT KIND OF PLANE DOESN'T FLY OUTSIDE?

BRIAN ENO: NO IT'S

RIFF CENTRAL: I'M SORRY, CALL ME OLDFASHIONED OR WHATEVER, BUT I ONLY GET ON PLANES THAT FLY OUTSIDE

BRIAN ENO: WELL OF COURSE

RIFF CENTRAL: YOU SEEM REALLY DOWN ON PLANES, EVEN THE OUTSIDE KIND. HAVE YOU THOUGHT ABOUT MAKING MUSIC FOR PEOPLE WHO LIKE FLYING PLANES (OUTSIDE)

BRIAN ENO: I DON'T KNOW WHAT THAT WOULD INVOLVE, SO NO

RIFF CENTRAL: IT WOULD SOUND A LOT LIKE RAP. LISTEN ENO WHAT ARE SOME OTHER LOCATIONS WHERE YOU'VE CREATED AMBIENT MUSIC

BRIAN ENO: I'VE MADE A RECORD ABOUT SOUNDS ON LAND, AND I ALSO WROTE SOUNDTRACKS FOR WHAT I LIKE TO CALL UNREALIZED FILMS

RIFF CENTRAL: HAVE YOU EVER CONSIDERING MAKING AN ALBUM CALLED AMBIENT 22: MUSIC ON DANCING

BRIAN ENO: ?

RIFF CENTRAL: IT WOULD SOOTHE PEOPLE'S ANXIETIES ABOUT DANCING.

BRIAN ENO: BUT THAT'S JUST

RIFF CENTRAL: A LOT OF PEOPLE ARE AFRAID TO DANCE

BRIAN ENO: I JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND

RIFF CENTRAL: HOW ABOUT AMBIENT 36: MUSIC ON BUTTS

BRIAN ENO: I DON'T KNOW HOW I WOULD GO ABOUT MAKING THAT

RIFF CENTRAL: WELL IT'S NOT PHYSICALLY ON THE BUTTS, JUST ABOUT THEM

BRIAN ENO: OH OK

RIFF CENTRAL: AND SOMETIMES ON THE BUTTS. ENO LET'S CUT TO THE CHASE. DO YOU THINK M83 IS AMBIENT OR JUST REALLY BORING

BRIAN ENO: I DON'T KNOW

RIFF CENTRAL: WHAT ABOUT KEITH FULLERTRON WHITMAN

BRIAN ENO: WHO?

RIFF CENTRAL: WHAT ABOUT THE STROKES. BECAUSE IT'S LIKE, YOU CAN PLAY THEIR RECORD AND NOT REALLY PAY ATTENTION, AND THEN YOU CAN ACTUALLY LISTEN AND BE LIKE WHOA, SOUNDS LIKE WALLPAPER

BRIAN ENO: I SUPPOSE

RIFF CENTRAL: DO YOU THINK THE STROKES DESERVE AN IPOD

BRIAN ENO: WHAT IS AN IPOD

The New York Animal Collective featuring Avey Tare, Panda bear, Geologist, and Deacon are a folk rock band who made the album called SUng Tongs last year, filled with many songs. Later that year the Panda Bear made a solo album without the rest of hte band entitled Young Prayers, which was about his father (dead). But now the Animal Collective have recorded a a record called the Prospect Hummer EP with folk Vishnu Bunyan, a legend in her own reich. Today on Riff Central Panda Bear discusses this monumental collaboration.

RIFF CENTRAL: WERE YOU SCARED TO WORK WITH SUCH A LEGEND AS VISHNU BUNYAN

PANDAEBEAR: VERY SCARED! VASHTI'S HAD SUCH AN INFLUENCE ON OUR WORK. RECORDING WITH HER HAS EASILY BEEN THE HIGHLIGHT OF OUR CAREER

RIFF CENTRAL: EVEN MORE THAN YOUR COLLABORATION WITH DEACON

PANDA BEAR: WELL, DEACON'S

RIFF CENTRAL: IT'S OK I UNDERSTAND

PANDA BEAR: NO IT'S JUST DEACON'S

RIFF CENTRAL: FINE, JUST SAY IT

PANDA BEAR: SAY WHAT?

RIFF CENTRAL: LISTEN IT'S FINE

PANDA BEAR: I WAS JUST GONNA SAY THAT DEACON AND I DON'T NECESSARILY THINK OF OUR WORK TOGETHER AS COLLABORATIVE, BECAUSE WE'RE A BAND

RIFF CENTRAL: YOU'RE KICKING DEACON OUT OF THE ANIMAL COLLECTIVE AREN'T YOU

PANDA BEAR: OF COURSE NOT! NO! ONCE A MEMBER OF THE ANIMAL COLLECTIVE, ALWAYS A MEMBER OF THE ANIMAL COLLECTIVE

RIFF CENTRAL: SOUNDS LIKE SOMETHING DEACON WOULD SAY

PANDA BEAR:

RIFF CENTRAL: WHATEVER IT'S NOT IMPORTANT, LET'S JUST KEEP GOING HERE

PANDAR BEAR: OK GOOD

RIFF CENTRAL: YOUR WORST ALBUM IS CALLED DANSE MANATEE.

PANDA BEAR: THAT IS WIDELY REGARDED AS OUR WORST ALBUM, YES

RIFF CENTRAL: IS IT TRUE THAT DEACON PLAYED ON THIS RECORD, THEREBY MAKING IT YOUR WORST RECORD

PANDA BEAR: DEACON PLAYED ON THE RECORD, BUT HONESTLY HE HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH THE RECORD BEING AS UNFOCUSED AS IT WAS.

RIFF CENTRAL: HOW ANGRY WERE YOU WHEN DEACON FUCKED UP DANSE MANATEE

PANDA BEAR: AS I SAID, IF DANSE MANATEE FAILED, IT'S NOT ANYBODY'S FAULT, JUST OURS COLLECTIVELY

RIFF CENTRAL: BUT DIDN'T YOU SAY DEACON'S PART OF THE ANIMAL COLLECTIVE

PANDA BEAR: YES

RIFF CENTRAL: SO COLLECTIVELY, WE KNOW WHO'S AT FAULT HERE

PANDA BEAR: I DIDN'T SAY THAT

RIFF CENTRAL: I'M SORRY WE ONLY HAVE TIME FOR ONE LAST QUESTION

PANDA BEAR: COOL

RIFF CENTRAL: WHEN PEOPLE THINK ANIMAL COLLECTIVE, THEY THINK OK, THIS IS EITHER PEOPLE MAKING ANIMAL SONGS, ANIMALS MAKING PEOPLE SONGS, OR IT'S SOMEWHERE IN BETWEEN, LIKE TRUST FUND KIDS WITH LOTS OF TIME.

PANDA BEAR: OK

RIFF CENTRAL: MY QUESTION IS THIS: HOW DOES DEACON FIT INTO THIS: CLUMSY RETARD, OR JUST REGULAR RETARD?

Currently he is the M.I.A.'s dj, and just performed at SXSW with M.I.A. Today Diplo sits down with Riff Central and talks about his upcoming projects:

RIFF CENTRAL: YOU ARE A FAMOUS PRODOUCER WHO HAS WORKED WITH THE M.I.A.

DIPLO: YES

RIFF CENTRAL: WAS M.I.A. THE REASON YOU GOT INTERESTED IN MUSIC

DIPLO: NO I HAD BEEN SPINNING RECORDS AND MAKING BEATS LONG BEFORE I MET MAYA ARULPRAGARASMAMAS

RIFF CENTRAL: I SEE YOU STLL HAVE TROUBLE PRONOUNCING HER LAST NAME. DOES THAT CAUSE TENSION IN YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH HER

DIPLO: ARE YOU ASKING ME IF I'M DATING MAYA

RIFF CENTRAL: NO I KNOW YOU FUCK MAYA, I WAS TALKING FROM A MUSICAL PERSPECTIVE

DIPLO: OH, WELL THEN I MEAN

RIFF CENTRAL: DO YOU FUCK MAYA

DIPLO: YES

RIFF CENTRAL: JUST CHECKING

DIPLO: OK

RIFF CENTRAL: LET'S GET BACK ON TOPIC. WHO ARE SOME OF THE FAVORITE ARTISTS OF YOURS

DIPLO: I'M STILL BIG ON MY BAILE FUNK TRIP, AND I HAVE ALSO REALLY GOTTEN BACK TO THE 80S PUNKFUNK STUFF

RIFF CENTRAL: INCREDIBLE

DIPLO: YES, A LOT OF THAT STUFF IS INCREDIBLE

RIFF CENTRAL: WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE ELECTRONIC MUSIC GUY WHO RECORDED AN ALBUM USING SOUNDS OF HIM AND HIS GIRLFRIEND HAVING SEX

DIPLO: I DON'T HAVE ANY THOUGHTS ON HIM

RIFF CENTRAL: DO YOU THINK HE'S COOL?

DIPLO: I HAVE NEVER HEARD HIS RECORD BEFORE

RIFF CENTRAL: TELL ME ABOUT HOLLERTRONIX. IS THAT A THING?

DIPLO: YES IT IS A PARTY I THROW WITH LOW BUDGET IN PHILADELPHIA FOR KIDS TO COME DANCE

RIFF CENTRAL: WHEN YOU FIRST STARTED THROWING THE HOLLERTRONIX DID YOU KNOW YOU'D EVENTUALLY MEET A FAMOUS POP STAR LIKE M.I.A.

DIPLO: NO LOW BURDGET AND I STARTED HOLLERTRONIX AS A WAY TO HAVE PARTIES FOR PEOPLE IN PHILLY SINCE THE SCEENW AS SORTA DRY

RIFF CENTRAL: BUT THEN M.I.A. CAME

DIPLO: YES M.I.A. HAS BEEN TO HOLLERTRONIX PARTIES

RIFF CENTRAL: I'M JUST SAYING

DIPLO: ?

RIFF CENTRAL: YOUR NAME IS WES, WHEREAS YOUR MUSICIAN'S NAME IS DIPLO. IS THAT A REFERENCE TO THE M.I.A.?

DIPLO: NO THE DIPLO IS A REFERENCE TO DIPLODOCUS WHICH IS A FAMOUS DINOSAUR.

RIFF CENTRAL: M.I.A. IS NOT A DINOSAUR

DIPLO: I KNOW

RIFF CENTRAL: LISTEN THIS INTERVIEW'S NOT ABOUT M.I.A., LET'S TALK ABOUT YOU

DIPLO: OK

RIFF CENTRAL: WHEN WAS THE FIRST TIME YOU MET THE M.I.A.

Mad Cutty is an angry peurtorican jew who is a famous lawyer in the new york city. home of baseball teams and many foren cultures, he is one person that stands out as a true hero. In addition to yelling at people and being a bad friend, he loves ladies and blasting sage francis songs out of his drop-top datsun 210.

WIFF CENTRAL: WHY ARE YOU SUCH A GOOD LAWYER

CUTTY: IT PROBABLY STARTED WITH MY PARENTS WHO ARE VERY SMART, AND RAISED ME TO QUESTION THE NATURE OF 'LAW'

WIFF CENTRAL: THATS GREAT TO HEAR. SO, DO YOU HATE IT WHEN PEOPLE CALL YOU THE PEURTO RICAN JEW?

CUTTY: NO OF COURSE NOT, I AM SO PROUD OF MY ANCESTORS. I HONOR THEM ON BOTH THE WEEKLY SADIRS AND ALSO PURTO RICAN DAY PARADE.

WIFF CENTRAL: WHY DO YOU CONTINUE TO LISTEN TO EMO-RAP? DIDNT YOU GET THAT BIG MEMO ON ILM THAT ITS OVER?

CUTTY: I STRONGLY DISAGREE AND AM CONSIDERING A LEGAL DISAGREEMTN AGAINST ILM AND ITS CONSTITUENTS. ANT AND SAGE AND DOSE ARE REALLY JUST MISUNDERSTOOD ARTISTS, WHO ARE ABLE TO TELL IT LIKE IT REALLY IS FOR DATE-RAPISTS THAT CRY ABOUT GIRLS THAT MAKE THEM CRY POSTE-DATE RAPE.

WIFF CENTRAL: MAYBE I WILL GIVE THEM ANOTHER CHANCE. HEY I'VE NOTICED YOU POST A LOT OF SUGGESTIVE IMAGES THAT MIGHT GIVE PEOPLE THE THOUGHT YOU YOURSELF ARE NOT INTERSTED IN WOMEN. IS THERE ANY LEGAL TRUTH TO THAT

CUTTY: I DO OF COURSE LOVE WOMEN BUT THERE IS A DARKNESS THAT LIES DEEP IN MY BOWELS THAT SOMTIMES I CAN NOT HELP COMING OUT.

WIFF CENTRAL: THANK YOU FOR AGREEING TO THIS I KNOW YOU ARE VERY BUSY GIVING LEGAL ADVICE. PERHAPS SOMEDAY YOU WILL HAVE YOUR OWN COMMERCIAL DURING A TELEVISIN SHOW LIKE MAURY POVICH OREVEN JUDGE JOE BROWN.

CUTTY: WOW THANK YOU FOR SAYING SO, ITS A REAL 'HONOR'. THE HONORABLE BROWN AND I SHARE THE SAME TYPE OF HISTORY SO I CAN ONLY DREAM OF THAT HONOR.

WIFF CENTRAL: YES I WILL DREAM OF THAT ALSO
