Being a scene teen in Minneapolis, c. '83-86, YES YES YES!

It got to the point where I just couldn't face the idea of local all- ages shows because if the group sucked I'd have to see people out and not know where to look when my opinion was asked for!

These days in London, I find this is the rule rather than the exception. I won't name names!

Anyone who thinks that original 60s girl groups were "charming and naive" needs to go and listen to some Shangri-Las singles and some Supremes singles again - I mean, really listen to them. There's a kind of knowingness and depth to a lot of girl group era stuff, lyrically especially, that really hasn't been matched in a long time.

In a way, it's the *opposite* that's what I hate about nouveau girl groups - that it's all cheesy cheery kitsch and finger-snapping without the undercurrent of actually addressing pain and suffering and complex emotional topics - no Love Child, no Living In Shame, no He Hit Me And It Felt Like A Kiss, no Past Present and Future - the fact that too many people listening to girl groups go "ooh, cute harmonies, cute dresses, handclaps" and disregard the fact that the songs are about the ostracism and the consequences of unprotected sex, the class line/racism, domestic violence, rape (just going through those four songs named - there are dozens more)

To miss that is to romanticise a gooey toffee apple view of a genre that is totally inaccurate.

I don't know anyone that's heard Toulouse's New Points, New Lines, but I have it and love it. I've read about two people on ilX who were searching for it, but I don't know if they ever acquired it. I can't find The Way the City Stretches at all, though...
