ha, i was at gaston's restaurant in lima when he asked us where we were from, and i said SF and he's all "no way, i just opened a restaurant there" and i said "well mcdonald's just opened up their first restaurant in cuzco, talk about a trade deficit..."

― Miss Fitzhenry (s1ocki), Wednesday, 26 August 2009 02:34 (sixteen years ago)
i've been to la mar. it was pretty good, but honestly WAY over priced (steve will come back and get really angry at me because he's been like five times and LOVES it)
limon is also pretty good. but limon rotisserie is amazing. the crowdedness is kinda annoying, but the food is fantastic and decently priced.
i haven't been to mi lindo peru in years, but remember thinking it was good. nice and down homey.

i think i have a "how-to" eat at la mar post on ilx somewhere, it basically tells you what to order and what to avoid and i sent it to mrs. jaxon when she asked me for it and then you guys order like all entrees and didn't order anything i rec'd so basically fuk u.
la mar is not a homey dive in bernal heights or some trendy mission spot where your server with a brow ring cannot pronounce causa correctly. acurio's one of the top chefs in the world, and that spot is some of the most expensive real estate in SF. gaston's extremely famous in south american and europe. when we were at his place this past september, gaston introduced us to two chefs from el bulli were there cooking in the kitchen learning and practicing his techniques. i can't recommend his restaurant in lima highly enough.
that said i haven't been to la mar in a while, i know they've changed chefs a few times but i have fond memories of my experiences there.

Finally hit Halu on 8th & Clement last night. That place is super cute. Had a small assortment of yakitori and a really great cold ramen dish and this crazy mayonaisse-y Japanese pizza thing. The wife is claiming it as her new favorite spot.
― Alex in SF, Thursday, 3 September 2009 21:09 (sixteen years ago)
Aww, that place is great. It's actually a fairly deep menu yakitori-wise (check their specials board for the seasonal stuff).
Sorry I missed out Tuesday night. Also, tell her now she's got all her fundraising done but she needs to up her miles (as do I!).

"Aww, that place is great. It's actually a fairly deep menu yakitori-wise (check their specials board for the seasonal stuff)."
Yeah we sat right under the specials board. Chicken skin is the best (first time I had that was at this awesome yakitori place in Dunedin.)
"Also, tell her now she's got all her fundraising done but she needs to up her miles (as do I!)."
I think she's planning a Sunday/Tuesday ride this week. She'll drop you a line.

steve, how old are you? i'm assuming you're older than i am. did you hit a bummerz streak in your early thirties?
― moonship journey to baja, Sunday, 4 October 2009 19:13 (sixteen years ago)
dude, i'm older than methuselah.
my bummerz streak was in my early 20s. lots of deaths including terminal illness in the nuclear family, some extremely shitty financial repercussions that followed, workaholicism as a form a therapy... 30s have been a breeze in comparison.
how are you doing dude? you healthy?
