dear dan selzer:

best bakery in woodside? there are so many

iatee, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 05:39 (sixteen years ago)

dan, do you know mikie well?

jaxon, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 05:43 (sixteen years ago)

I've never met mikie! Just emailing via facebook, sort of virtual friend of a friend thing via Josh, who I also don't know very well though I set up a last minute gig for him on a tuesday a year or so ago that only 4 of my friends showed up to.

I don't know much about bakeries...there's a little "italian" bakery though probably with not many/any italians called V+V or something on Roosevelt just past the LIRR that makes really awesome black and white cookies. Closer to Sunnyside on Skillman there's a pretty famous french bakery called Le Marjalaine which is really good. http://www.lamarjolainebakery.com/

Further down roosevelt there's some south american joints, one next to El Sitio in the high 60s makes good wheat empenadas.

What have you been digging in the area? Had a great meal at Zabb in Jackson Heights last night which I haven't had in ages. They have a few dishes that blow Srip out of the water though they don't have as consistently good and varied a menu as them.

dan selzer, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 13:46 (sixteen years ago)

ah, mikie just used to do a disco night at the same place i was doing one, so we'd go to each others' events. and josh and i are doing a kraut/minsyn/postpunk night together now.

jaxon, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 16:43 (sixteen years ago)

whats happening in the new year dan selzer

max, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 16:51 (sixteen years ago)

been digging basically everything (the only disappointing woodside/jh/ss meal I've had in the last two months was de mole in sunnyside.)

cannelle in JH is probably my single favorite queens food but it's something of a walk. absurdly cheap tho.

iatee, Wednesday, 27 January 2010 18:05 (sixteen years ago)

sorry to hear that about de mole. I know it can be mixed...we were among the earliest fans when they just switched to that name and were really cheap and never busy. They've raised the prices and are still very cheap, and deliver. But they've grown and gotten too crowded. Some of the food can be bland but the dishes I like, the chicken mole burrito, the tinga plate and tinga quesadilla are great. And breakfast is great. But even normal stuff I find to at least be fresh and well made and it's a really pleasant place. You should try it again. Torta's are good too.

Speaking of tortas...the cemitas at Tia Julia! I need to have one of those again.

Never been to Cannelle.

What's new in the new year? I quit DJing because the last several parties I've done have been so dead. OH yeah. I'm djing this saturday. And maybe at Market Hotel in a few weeks.

I have like 7 jobs.

Method Actors CD out in march, then a string of money-losing vinyl/digital obscurities.

dan selzer, Thursday, 28 January 2010 07:42 (sixteen years ago)

go to cannelle! it's a legit french bakery with queens prices (under $2 for a v. nice pastry or cupcake)

hmm will give de mole another shot one day, but I actually had the chicken mole burrito. I didn't find it gross, but it just seemed sorta bland. maybe will try to find something w/ more spice next time.

la flor OTOH exceeded my expectations. that place is amazing in every sense.

iatee, Thursday, 28 January 2010 15:24 (sixteen years ago)

Haven't been in a while but used to go all the time. Especially for brunch. I love the quesadilla, which is really unlike any standard kind of quesadilla. Two GIANT masa cakes filled with tons of cheese and chicken or shrimp and topped with more cheese. Cover it with the red and green sauces and it's seriously awesome.

I had dinner there once, they had a kind of cheesy guitarist/singer and it's a bit "upscale" for a neighborhood joint and a bit pricey, but I had these ribs with mexican slaw that was totally amazing.

I've heard of cannelle but it's def. far for us.

I also like Cuckoo's Nest for Irish pub breakfast on sundays (great "chips"), Mangal Kebab on Queens blvd for great chicken/lamb gyro, hummus, lentil soup, etc. Dehli Heights and Mehfil for indian. (the latter has a great lunch buffet.) among others...

dan selzer, Thursday, 28 January 2010 15:52 (sixteen years ago)

don't you have a car! it's far for us too, but north of broadway it's a pleasant walk through the jh garden homes.

only had brunch at la flor, dinner did seem more pricey but brunch was v. fairly priced for what we got.

iatee, Thursday, 28 January 2010 15:55 (sixteen years ago)

yeah...we have a car! We'll check it out. I've read good things about it. We drive up that way for Pio Pio on Northern as well.

Brunch is normal priced, though not cheap like De Mole, but dinner was really good.

dan selzer, Thursday, 28 January 2010 16:33 (sixteen years ago)

<3 La Flor. near my friend's house. I like the brunch better

Kiss & Tell, a monthly party at Rose Live Music in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, has been producing unique theme based events for over four years. Each month Kiss & Tell invites well known electronic music DJs eager to play a different kind of set, filled with music outside of the genres they are known for. Our DJs play italo, disco (classics and edits), party jams, electro, house, girl groups, gothypants, new wave, and post punk.

This month the ladies at Kiss & Tell are hosting their own party and skipping the prom. We invited two of our all time favorite Kiss & Tell DJs to play postpunk and other gems. Too bad you are not invited to our anti-prom. But if you were, you would...

+ Wear: Something old, torn, and stolen. Black leather and safety pins. Neon, neon, neon. A nice Jonathan Richman suit. Big Gothy Robert Smith Hair. Thin ties. Cut up band T-shirts.

Time Out this week: "Seze Devres, resident DJ Bethany Benzur and their pals are back at the intimate Rose Live Music to spill the secrets of disco, exotica, synth material, new wave and plenty more. This edition features guest deck sets (of the postpunky, art-rocky and synth-poppy varieties) from Acute Records recluse Dan Selzer and the Clink label’s Grant “Insideout” Aaron. Dress as your favorite postpunk artist! (We’re opting for Creatures-era Budgie.)"

bb, Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:13 (sixteen years ago)

Thanks for the Method Actors, Dan. Heard "Do the Method" for the first time yesterday and I had to listen to it four times in a row.
Found their lp at the community station I volunteer at later that night. It's in great shape, too. Nice gatefold cover, these guys were sharp.
It's funny, the exact same thing happened to me with the Fire Engines.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 13 May 2010 15:32 (sixteen years ago)

and that's why I do a record label, I suppose.

So people can download my sample then go steal the original vinyl from their local radio station.

no, really, it's the girls and money.

Gatefold cover, but 1 or 2 LPs? The original UK release was a double LP, the american version single, but they were both gatefolds. Our CD contains selections from both platters along with most of the singles leading up to it.

btw, last night was fun. Small and weird as predicted, but more dancing then I expected. It was dark so I couldn't tell if there were 2 or 20 people at any given time, probably closer to the former, but it's not every wednesday night in NYC where people dance to The Associates, Josef K, Au Pairs, Repetition, Drinking Electricity, etc

dan selzer, Thursday, 13 May 2010 16:20 (sixteen years ago)

DUDE I am gonna buy the cd and I haven't stolen a single thing from the station!
Sheesh I knew that was gonna come off the wrong way.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 13 May 2010 16:37 (sixteen years ago)

It's the single lp.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 13 May 2010 16:37 (sixteen years ago)

I live in bumfuck Missouri, I couldn't buy the cd in time for my show last night. Most labels send radio stations promo cds for free, ya know? Not saying that you should send on to our station, but I did in fact download it for Promotional use, imagine that.
I heard the song in the Dusted review.
FWIW I tried to buy the cd and the People of the North lp online yesterday and my card was declined. I am not sure why, either.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 13 May 2010 16:39 (sixteen years ago)

And I bought the Fire Engines cd, too.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 13 May 2010 16:45 (sixteen years ago)

Next time I get excited about Acute Records I'll just keep it to myself.

Trip Maker, Thursday, 13 May 2010 16:49 (sixteen years ago)

take it easy, I was just teasing! Please share your love of Acute Records with the world.

Just not via radidshare or megaupload!

dan selzer, Thursday, 13 May 2010 16:54 (sixteen years ago)

one month passes...

does anyone have any of the alldisco podacsts? #8 and #9 (especially dan's #8, which starts off with dr. buzzard's original savannah band's sunshower) are some of my all-time favorite mixes. but my cd of them died! and i lost the mp3s! i can't find them anywhere on the internet. help?

rmd, Thursday, 24 June 2010 20:59 (fifteen years ago)

I only have one or two, as well as countless un-podcasted 6 hr recordings of alldisco, but Jeremy was the one recording and hosting them. He's out of town this week but I'll see what he's got.

dan selzer, Friday, 25 June 2010 00:13 (fifteen years ago)

I've created a new mailing list for my DJ activities. Mostly for people who don't like Facebook or get buried under it's thousands of posts and events and whatnot. I've included an awesome poll as well:

dear dan selzer,

have you been to the legend's bar and grill in jackson heights? apparently it used to be another bbq/bar place? I like BBQ and it's like a 5 min walk so I'm hoping the answer is "yes" and "it's good and cheap"

iatee, Sunday, 10 October 2010 01:32 (fifteen years ago)

no i haven't. It used to be called Pearsons(sp?), a bar in LIC with great bbq in the back, then they moved the bar to Jackson Heights, then Pearson's changed to Legends but it's still the same cook or something? Word is/was that it's not as good as it used to be but is still good? I don't know why I've never been. Vegetarian girlfriend, probably.

dan selzer, Sunday, 10 October 2010 01:57 (fifteen years ago)

oh that'll do it. well I'll prolly report back soon.

iatee, Sunday, 10 October 2010 02:05 (fifteen years ago)

american bbq is like the least queens-y thing in the world

iatee, Sunday, 10 October 2010 02:07 (fifteen years ago)

Went to Payag last night, the new filipino place up near La Flor. It's pretty serious, big investment. It was crowded, mostly filipino but a few whities. The food was ok to pretty good, I'm still trying to figure out what to eat. It was "refined" and a bit fusiony, read: upscale. Not watered down, the shrimp wasn't peeled. And filipino food is fusiony to begin with, with heavy Spanish influence. A band started playing, traditional music? Nope, acoustic cover of Poker Face. Pretty surreal. Never know what to get from filipino food, will research and go back.

Not super cheap, not really expensive but def. not a super deal.

dan selzer, Sunday, 10 October 2010 13:42 (fifteen years ago)

that's the 'modern filipino' place right? yeah me and the girl have very little interest in filipino food, partly cause our bathroom often smells of it strongly due to this place's ventilation. it seems like an extremely acquired taste.

iatee, Sunday, 10 October 2010 14:30 (fifteen years ago)

Dear Dan Selzer:
Hello again. How was lunch? In the future, may I recommend Soul Flavors? It's twice as expensive but three times as good.
Forks.

Such an octopus of a thing. And I have only an inkling! (forksclovetofu), Sunday, 10 October 2010 15:05 (fifteen years ago)

lunch was good, a bit of a wait. My sister's taken other family members to Soul Flavors, that's the one close to the train I think? She lives right near there. She's vegetarian and my girlfriend only eats fish, so if we would find ourselves in Jersey City we probably wouldn't end up there. Dosas in the indian section is more likely!

dan selzer, Sunday, 10 October 2010 21:38 (fifteen years ago)

re: filipino food. it's so meat heavy, surprised your gf ate there, dan. i dunno if i've ever had a vegetable dish in the 14 yrs i've been w/a filipino woman besides like potatoes or greenbeans as part of a stew or something. is rice a vegetable? imo, it's kind of a boring cuisine. not spicy and not that many spices but i've grown to really like it over the years.

Chicken (or beef or pork) Adobo. slow cooked. heavy on vinegar, soy sauce and garlic.

Pansit Palabok. thin, clear noodle dish with sliced veggies (carrots, onion, celery). usually has chinese sausages, hard boiled eggs or lil shrimps as a protein.

Lumpia. fried egg rolls. lumpia shanghai are tiny ones w/just pork. the "normal" ones are called Lumpia Prito or Lumpia Gulay or just Lumpia. they're bigger w/veggies (bean sprouts, string beans, carrots) and sometimes small shrimp or ground meat. and Turon are plantain or banana lumpia w/brown sugar.

Kare Kare. love this one. oxtail w/a peanut butter sauce. served on the bone so you have to dig in the crevices, but it's hella tender.

Crispy Pata. super deep fried pork leg w/skin on. dip in vinegar w/fish sauce. tasty but fried so much it gets kinda hard. wife broke a crown last time she ate this.

Lechón. whole roasted suckling pig. this is ridiculously amazing but kinda scary. the skin is crispy like chips. also Chicharrón is very popular. fried pork rinds. dipped in vinegar/

Siopao (pronounced show pow). steamed pork buns

they have some really great breads and pastries. Ensaymada (sometimes filled w/cream cheese) & Pandesal. these are generally soft and buttery and sometimes a lil sweet. and they have empenadas that are similar to argentinian ones.

most desserts are rice and coconut based. Ube (oooh-bee) is a sweet purple yam. Halo Halo is a fun shaved ice dish with toppings like milk, coconut, tapioca and a bunch of tropical fruits.

dishes to possibly stay away from (unless you're like Andrew Zimmern) is Balut. fertilized duck egg. wife's dad likes to taunt her w/this one. you can see the beak and egg inside. he slurps it up. also they have a "Black Soup" aka blood stew

jaxon, Monday, 11 October 2010 01:54 (fifteen years ago)

damn you know more about filipino food than you do about 70s singer songwriters

max, Monday, 11 October 2010 01:57 (fifteen years ago)

that "black soup" is sometimes called "chocolate beef"... mmm congealed coagulated blood stew.

Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Monday, 11 October 2010 01:57 (fifteen years ago)

went to the bbq place today

the food is okay, not super expensive. not a must go but if you want some bbq and a sportsy bar that isn't filled w/ irish people...

waitress was this jolly hispanic woman who was actually really annoying.

iatee, Monday, 11 October 2010 02:04 (fifteen years ago)

chocolate soup! that's what i was trying to remember

jaxon, Monday, 11 October 2010 02:08 (fifteen years ago)

so gnarly. there's a vietnamese variation of it too iirc. you get your daily intake of iron at least...

Fartbritz Sootzveti (Steve Shasta), Monday, 11 October 2010 02:11 (fifteen years ago)

and blood
