JW,

I, like you, was once one young buck with a wild streak. But since many TM sessions and cultural reprogramming, I have found dietary harmony under the almighty influence of a macrobiotic diet. I have been a professional wakeboarder for 3 and a half years and I highly doubt that my unmatched skill for butterslides, heelside carves, and toeside 720s would be what it is without Verne Verona and his TRUTH.

Enjoy, this is my gift of love for each and everyone of you this year and every year until we meet the LION in the HEAVEN.

The cliff Bud Cort drove his car off at the end of Harold and Maude (dir: Hal Ashby, 1971)
L: 37 37'10.83"N
L: 122 29'51.64"W
This is a rocky cliff right next to Mori Point in Pacifica, CA, and is the cliff that Bud Cort drove his car off at the end of Harold and Maude. The place where the car landed is at the top of the long-ish, dark rocky patch right in the inside center of the curved-in part of the cliff (the tide is higher here than when the scene was shot).
GoogleEarth does weird things with "3-D" terrain (the cliff walls and water kind of melt into each other), but the hills to the right of this photo, where Cort walked away while playing his banjo, are fun to explore.

San Francisco Premiere
Plagues & Pleasures on the Salton Sea
Dirs. Chris Metzler and Jeff Springer US 2005
"There was time when the Salton Sea, tucked into the southeast corner of California, was known as the Riviera of the West - a haven for jetsetters and vacationers. Originally created by accident, it\'s now one of the country\'s worst ecological disasters: a fetid, stagnant, salty lake, coughing up dead fish and birds by the thousands. Still, a hardy few have hung on there, hoping for help to come along and restore the lake to its former glory. Congressman Sonny Bono himself was once dedicated to saving the lake. Eccentrics abound in this surreal landscape: the naked guy who waves to passing RVs\; the man who built his own holy mountain\; beer-loving Hungarian Hunky Daddy\; the guys who plan to get rich someday when this virtual sewer becomes a Riviera again. Hair-raising and hilarious, part history lesson, part cautionary tale and part portrait of one of the strangest communities you\'ve ever seen, this is the American Dream gone as stinky as a dead carp." - SF Docfest (71m)

Dear Adam,

Why do the Vengaboys make Ibiza seem like some kinda chilled out beach town instead of Ultradramaglam replete with rhinestone bikinis, gold lame chaps and oversized cowboy hats?

Steve Shasta

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 23 February 2006 23:18 (twenty years ago)

Steve, sadly I can't speak for the Vengaboys.

You obviously know about more about Ibiza than me. Have you been? Are there cervezas and tasty waves?

Cousin yogurt beard (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 February 2006 23:21 (twenty years ago)

Bro, there is a left there, wait... I'm not sure I can talk about it. Dude, just go... just paddle out somewhere about 3km southwest of La Puerto Del Diablo. That's all I can say dude.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 23 February 2006 23:23 (twenty years ago)

Best snippet of overheard conversation

Dude, I heard this obnoxious Marina girl talking about "planning to fall into a K-hole tonight" on somewhat crowded public transit this morning.

I heard some gems recently in NYC but I forgot them, damn it!

Steve

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 23 February 2006 23:45 (twenty years ago)

I made a rare trip on SF public transit the other day - I took the bus to eat at Burma Super Star, 4th & Clement.

Cousin yogurt beard (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 February 2006 23:57 (twenty years ago)

Adam,

How long did you wait in line?

Steve

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Thursday, 23 February 2006 23:58 (twenty years ago)

:)

Anout 65 minutes. Outside. In the rain.

It was worth it though.

Cousin yogurt beard (nordicskilla), Thursday, 23 February 2006 23:58 (twenty years ago)

I'd rate it FOUR OUT OF FIVE STARS. Give them your cellphone # and just go across the street to the bookstore.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 24 February 2006 00:01 (twenty years ago)

Where else should I try?

I did go across the street to that cafe next door to the bookstore and just as I ordered a beer, my cellphone rang...

Yeah, I waited over an hour before finally deciding to go across the street. I realize that doesn't exactly make sense.

Cousin yogurt beard (nordicskilla), Friday, 24 February 2006 00:03 (twenty years ago)

The food is unique. I think that is what makes this restaurant's appeal for everyone. However, when you've had the real Burmese cuisine that Burma SuperStar's dishes are meant to approximate, Burma SuperStar no longer seems so out of this world. My mother, grandparents, and many aunts, uncles, & cousins are from Burma, so I'm familiar. (And btw for earlier posters, the country is still called Burma by original Burmese citizens as Myanmar was the name given to it by the illegitimate military dictatorship that took over the country in 1962.) It is true though, there aren't many places to get Burmese food in the city. However there is Mandalay just a couple blocks away and I'll be trying that place next. There are also a couple of great, private Burmese caterers in the Bay Area. NOT TO MENTION, I've found this restaurant usually filled with cliche culture-whores, many of them desperately (and cheesily) trying impress first dates. But if YOU want to impress a first date with your worldliness, by all means... take him/her to Burma SuperStar. Good vegetarian selection though.

Cousin yogurt beard (nordicskilla), Friday, 24 February 2006 00:07 (twenty years ago)

What are you in the mood for?

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 24 February 2006 00:07 (twenty years ago)

Hmmm...I don't know. Malaysian?

Or maybe just a really good hamburger.

Cousin yogurt beard (nordicskilla), Friday, 24 February 2006 00:08 (twenty years ago)

Or an Ethiopian place that is better than the one Ethiopian place I have been to, the one at Telegraph and Ashby whose name escapes me.

Cousin yogurt beard (nordicskilla), Friday, 24 February 2006 00:10 (twenty years ago)

Or Oaxacan.

Cousin yogurt beard (nordicskilla), Friday, 24 February 2006 00:11 (twenty years ago)

There's an Indonesian place in the tenderloin which is pretty good, can't remember the name at the momy.

I just do the In-N-Out thing for a burger... You've got Jupiter and Barney's reasonably close though.

Ethiopian/Eritrean I've never had in The Beast, but try Axum, Sawa or Cafe Waziema if you ever find yourself out by Miguel Blanco.

Mexican food is pretty tough... tons of central american taquerias but very few traditional Mexican restaurants. Save it for LA or San Diego.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 24 February 2006 00:15 (twenty years ago)

I haven't been to In N Out in so long! It's usually a road-trip thing.

Food at Jupiter is good but service is absolutely terrible. Barney's is great though. I like the deck at the College branch.

I think I'll try one of them Ethiopians. I don't find myself out by Michael (wherever that is) but I wonder if I'll see him at Mad Dog In The Fog at 7am again soon.

Cousin yogurt beard (nordicskilla), Friday, 24 February 2006 00:20 (twenty years ago)

He is quite amazing to happen across him:

Baudelaire tome (in French of course) tucked under his arm on a city bus, smoking outside a bar where everyone inside is smoking anyway... I tell you, it has been a long time since such decency and class has graced that neck of the woods.

adam for Ethiopean: Red Sea Restaurant 5200 Claremont Ave. one block east of Telegraph

Steve Shasta, was something happening last night you were asking me about on that sampling thread or was that just madness?

milton parker (Jon L), Friday, 24 February 2006 00:32 (twenty years ago)

Oh I totally forgot about that!!! I was going to ask if you wanted to go see Mice Parade (I have no idea if you're a fan or not, I just thought of you for some reason when I got the offer).

I ended up seeing The Three Burials of Melquiades Estrada instead. Not bad. I'm still making up my mind about it. It's a "thinker".

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 24 February 2006 00:35 (twenty years ago)

I like a couple of those 'thinking' movies

I stayed in and worked on tracks by a band I'm not even in anymore, I'm an idiot

milton parker (Jon L), Friday, 24 February 2006 00:45 (twenty years ago)

yo Shasta,

I am too timid to start a thread on ILB, so how I watch these World Baseball games, is anything being televised?

http://www.worldbaseballclassic.com/2006/schedule/index.jsp?sid=wbc

midi sanskrit (sanskrit), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 01:01 (twenty years ago)

If you have TV:
http://www.worldbaseballclassic.com/2006/schedule/index.jsp?mc=television&sid=wbc

Or you can pay through MLB.com for their service.

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 01:06 (twenty years ago)

Steve, will you be coming to Coney Island for a Cyclones game ILB FAP this summer? Dunno if you can bring the board in.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:21 (twenty years ago)

May?

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:26 (twenty years ago)

Dude, it's a short-season league that doesn't start til late June. (Tho if it's the Newark Bears in May -- easy tickets -- I wdn't recommend wakeboarding in the Passaic River.)

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Wednesday, 8 March 2006 15:28 (twenty years ago)

MAX BRODY, ULTIMATE ROADIE (ddb), Friday, 10 March 2006 20:15 (twenty years ago)

Steve,

What does the future hold for the surfing world now that Clark foam has shut down? Will we see a surge in the popularity of wakeboarding?

Always yours,

gbx

gbx (skowly), Friday, 10 March 2006 20:17 (twenty years ago)

was just talking to my brother and he says people are starting to surf really big waves with much shorter (5'10) boards that are really heavy so they can do trix and stuff. not sure if they're being built w/new materials, but i would assume so.

steve,

do you have the most recent issue of surfer magazine? my bro made it in w/those gigantic mavericks wave pix i posted a while back. 2 page spread!

MAX BRODY, ULTIMATE ROADIE (ddb), Friday, 10 March 2006 20:30 (twenty years ago)

Dudes,

first off, I've forwarded hstencil's email along to interested parties. hella thanks bro!

secondly, my dear morbs, i do feel bad that i only got to see hstencil (2x!!!) on my last trip. also JW for about 20 mins (still foxy!!!) it was a hectic sched, my bretheren, if I had been on my own (or during baseball season), it would be diff!

thirdly, according to my friends at Mollusk Surf Shop at Ocean Beach, there is another foam distributor that ramped up production from 3k blanks a week to several dozen thousand. all is not in jeopardy.

fourthly, for ddb:
cuttlefish, I'm bringing my 6'6" spoonnose with a sick pintail.
h, got yours. i'll call you on thursday about friday, i still don't know my schedule tho.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 10 March 2006 20:43 (twenty years ago)

Did you know that I *know* the sender of that email?

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 10 March 2006 20:46 (twenty years ago)

no, but it figures as much.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 10 March 2006 20:50 (twenty years ago)

i mean, if you know him, ask him to give me work! please!!!1

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 10 March 2006 20:51 (twenty years ago)

He's a total sweety. Are you on his list?

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:02 (twenty years ago)

i dunno. the last time i heard from him was last fall about a tm gig that didn't happen. so i guess maybe i'm on a list of potentials now or something? all i know is: i need a new job soon.

hstencil (hstencil), Friday, 10 March 2006 21:04 (twenty years ago)

STEVE, WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE FACT THAT IT'S SNOWING IN SAN FRANCISCO?

team jaxon (jaxon), Saturday, 11 March 2006 04:06 (twenty years ago)

I'm thinking the same thing as when it snowed about 6-7 years ago... It melts almost immediately!

Steve Shasta (Steve Shasta), Saturday, 11 March 2006 07:56 (twenty years ago)

It was HAIL not SNOW

jeez

Adamrl (nordicskilla), Saturday, 11 March 2006 17:41 (twenty years ago)

Maybe not in Berkeley but it snowed on Twin Peaks and Mt. Sutro.
