Right, but other jobs may require you to live in the lolburbs

Kramkoob (Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 01:38 (seventeen years ago)

? i am applying to jobs in several other cities that are not new york, not any in suburbs

lil yawne (harbl), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 01:58 (seventeen years ago)

Any neighborhood that was sold as "up and coming" last year is probably not a place you want to move right now.

Everything is Highlighted (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 03:41 (seventeen years ago)

oooh careful w/ public offices. my friend was interviewing w/ queens d.a. office for several months and then they were like 'oh yeah, btw, we don't actually have budget approval to hire anyone right now! lolz!'

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 04:49 (seventeen years ago)

like anyone does

gabbneb, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 04:59 (seventeen years ago)

this was before things got really crazy economically. i mean, they were bad, but not as bad as now. also, why waste time/resources with 3 or 4 interviews if you can't do anything about it?

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 05:30 (seventeen years ago)

It's good to be a foodie in NYC; it's real pig in shit territory.

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 06:30 (seventeen years ago)

yeah i know about the public offices having no money thing

lil yawne (harbl), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 10:17 (seventeen years ago)

$1300 to live alone is beyond unreasonable to me, if my rent went above $1000 it would be like 50% of my take-home. But on $47,000 you could probably do it. Also fuck you to whomever thinks anything below $1000 for a share is "roughing it". What??

Vampire romances depend on me (Laurel), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 13:30 (seventeen years ago)

yeah seriously. my rent just went up another $50 and i'm still WELL below $1000 for a share with awesome roommates and a backyard.

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 13:34 (seventeen years ago)

I like how $47,000 has become the canonical salary on this thread.

caek, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 13:41 (seventeen years ago)

Also, lol exchange rate. If it keeps going like this even the low Columbia salary will allow me to eat into GBP student loan.

caek, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 13:42 (seventeen years ago)

i would just be sad because maybe in other states i would have that much money left AFTER paying rent because the pay would be higher and the rent would be far lower but, again, this could all be purely hypothetical. i'm also allergic to roommates! also xpost i think it's more like $48,500 or something but whatever

lil yawne (harbl), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 13:43 (seventeen years ago)

$47k has become the cannonical salary because that's what you and harbl said you'd probably make. You started it.

Vampire romances depend on me (Laurel), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 13:46 (seventeen years ago)

I know! I like that it has become the canonical salary!

caek, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 13:46 (seventeen years ago)

Also fuck you to whomever thinks anything below i000 for a share is "roughing it".

I've seen seven hundred dollar a month apartments in Jersey City that involve sharing one bathroom with four people along with a bedroom that's twelve by twelve with a window facing a wall. And much worse in New York. I'm not saying that's the only option, but it takes work to find something comfortable for under a grand a month in the outlying NY area and A LOT of work or luck to find something liveable, comfortable and solo for under a grand a month. You've got to sacrifice something: privacy, light, six floor walk up, location...

47K is like 14 euros now, right?

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 13:48 (seventeen years ago)

47 000 U.S. dollars = 26 449.0715 British pounds

caek, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 13:49 (seventeen years ago)

GIVE

caek, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 13:49 (seventeen years ago)

I will live with you in Jersey City, forks

caek, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 13:50 (seventeen years ago)

I stumbled into a not-much-more-than-a-grand rent-stabilized solo place in Kensington, w/ a pool on the roof. (Craigslist)

Dr Morbius, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 13:55 (seventeen years ago)

It's not that much work, forks. I'm in my weirdest situation ever right now with the loft thing, but the whole time I lived in Crown Heights my rent was $600-650 with one roommate and so much space we had OUR OWN living rooms. A judicious exploration of craigslist shares will reward you.

And 12 x 12' is a large bedroom for most parts of the metro area, not just apartments you have to "sacrifice" for.

Vampire romances depend on me (Laurel), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 13:57 (seventeen years ago)

I mean congratulations, you can afford whatever you pay (albeit as a couple, if I recall) and I'm glad you like it there. But those of us with one income below $45k aren't living in the streets in poverty, or trudging up 5 flights of stairs to our cold, ashy garrets.

Vampire romances depend on me (Laurel), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 14:12 (seventeen years ago)

Right now two of us are technically living on the equivalent of well under double that salary, and we're ok.

Everything is Highlighted (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 20:51 (seventeen years ago)

my chick is living on like $10 a year and shes doing ok

Barack HUSSEIN Obama (max), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 20:55 (seventeen years ago)

in two places?

gabbneb, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 21:02 (seventeen years ago)

Well no. But you do need more space/stuff/etc. for two people than one even if it's less than double.

Everything is Highlighted (Hurting 2), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 21:07 (seventeen years ago)

If you guys can get TransitCheck or whatever you call it DO IT.

Kramkoob (Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃), Wednesday, 1 October 2008 21:39 (seventeen years ago)

I'm hardly captain moneybags here, Laurel; I'm paying under a grand myself, but my girl owns the apartment we live in. I'm saying that if 1) you're unwilling to pay more than a grand for your rent and 2)if you want to live by yourself in New York or outlying areas it requires much patience and work and luck. Would you argue that?

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 22:22 (seventeen years ago)

And if I seem picky about this, it's cuz people treat JC like it's upstate or the gulag when it's about as far away from midtown as Brooklyn is. I used to be in the same boat, but having followed my girl out here I'm of a different mind. Worst thing is not being able to ever cab it.

forksclovetofu, Wednesday, 1 October 2008 22:29 (seventeen years ago)

earlier you said "1100 to 1000 would be a reasonable share and you could probably go lower and rough it." what laurel and others are saying is that you can go well below 1000 and not be roughing it, as i am now, and i found my apartment in about a week.

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Thursday, 2 October 2008 00:26 (seventeen years ago)

you're living by yourself?

forksclovetofu, Thursday, 2 October 2008 04:42 (seventeen years ago)

no, i was referring to your comment about shares...

highly theoretical, of course. (tehresa), Tuesday, 7 October 2008 02:20 (seventeen years ago)

Dr Morbius, Thursday, 4 December 2008 14:22 (seventeen years ago)

re: upthread, i may not go to new york :((((((

columbia is only offering one rather than ten positions in the job i am applying for this year because they lost $2bn on the markets so far this year. no joke.
