coming to the UK in late July. May even have a DJ gig. Anybody else need a DJ? Where do I buy records?
― dan selzer, Friday, 30 May 2008 04:09 (eighteen years ago)
awesome! where are you playing?
― Tracer Hand, Friday, 30 May 2008 04:14 (eighteen years ago)
nothing confirmed yet, so maybe only my iPod. Will let you know.
― dan selzer, Friday, 30 May 2008 04:35 (eighteen years ago)
You'll probably find the records ridiculously expensive. Are you gonna be in London?

the "dollar records" are all 20 pounds
― jaxon, Friday, 30 May 2008 17:14 (eighteen years ago)
I don't care how much they weigh, just so long as they're cheap.
― dan selzer, Friday, 30 May 2008 19:13 (eighteen years ago)
London, St. Albans, Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh, Katmandu...
I'd actually be fine buying NEW records like what they sell at Picadilly or Phonica and not having to pay the shipping to the US.

pure groove records is apparently going to reopen in farringdon by the time you get here:
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2374149631
flashback records in islington:
http://www.flashback.co.uk/
there's a used records shop on essex road that i think you'd really like dan (lots of s'express!) though i can't remember the name of it right now.
and of course rough trade, off brick lane:

― Tracer Hand, Saturday, 31 May 2008 15:28 (eighteen years ago)
the one on essex road may be called "haggle vinyl"
― Tracer Hand, Saturday, 31 May 2008 15:29 (eighteen years ago)
Haggle needs an enema. But I kinda like 'em messy. And the older dude in there is quite amusing. I usually get caught at Flashback (also on Essex Rd) before I get there.
The run of shops from the Notting Hill Music and Video Exchange(s) to Ladbroke Grove still works pretty good. And there's also Intoxica and that cool twofer shop where a pair of dudes (once partners??) with rival stores sit facing each other in the same place. Always interesting originals. And Honest Jon's has a lot of distinctly cheap soul and jazz reissues.
Mostly shite pubs round there though.

my life in the bush of ghosts = $4 at the flea market $8 at wfmu £20 ($40) at intoxica
― sanskrit, Sunday, 1 June 2008 13:04 (eighteen years ago)
sounds like Monster Music in Paris ... El Topo soundtrack that Academy has on the wall for 30 bucks was stickered for 100 euro
― dmr, Sunday, 1 June 2008 15:56 (eighteen years ago)
there were a bunch of decent guys in the lock market in camden, but lord knows where theyve gone off to...and some guy would set up by the good mixer a couple days a week.
otherwise ill second the line of shops in ladbroke grove
― bb, Monday, 2 June 2008 14:12 (eighteen years ago)
the shop that's been split down the middle is called minus zero/stand out, i think. lots of power pop, and at least one of the guys will talk your ear off if you're interested. definitely worth visiting. i wouldn't bother with intoxica, even if you're in the area. not really your thing, and the prices are absurd.
there were a couple of second-hand shops in hanway st, which runs in a u shape between the end of oxford street and tottenham court road. i don't know if either are still open, but both were decent for bargain-hunting. at one point, one of the shops had a huge box of 45s going for something ridiculous like 50 for £10.

Rory said he'd help out...and he's hooking me up with a party, Say Yes! More details soon.

wait, is this in portobello rd/ladbroke grove area?
and at least one of the guys will talk your ear off if you're interested
i only ask because i remember in '99 a record store/head shop around there all divvied up and this one crusty guy (american expat) started to lecture me for no reason at all about how paul simon stole the black man's soul and the use of ladysmith black mambazo on graceland was a spiritual abomination.
― sanskrit, Wednesday, 4 June 2008 03:03 (eighteen years ago)
it's possible. it's in the same area (right off portobello rd in blenheim crescent), but that doesn't sound quite like it... it's all music, no head shop stuff.

Ze records party tues?
― Catsupppppppppppppp dude 茄蕃, Monday, 23 June 2008 17:30 (seventeen years ago)
why didn't they ask me to DJ Ze records party?!?!? A few years ago somebody woulda asked me. Now they're all like, "Dan who?"
so sad.
Saturday was fun even though we dj'd on the worst turntables of all time. Beat up belt-driven stantons. Mixing was hard.

It was fun, hot sweaty fun.
Why don't people in the UK understand "ice"? I want ICE WATER, is that so hard to understand? And stop giving me glasses of coke without ice. It only tastes good when it's really cold and the ice melts a bit. Coke knows this, that's why on their cans in the UK it says "Serve Cold" or something. It also says "caffeinated soft drink with vegetable extracts". What the hell does that mean?
― dan selzer, Friday, 1 August 2008 00:09 (seventeen years ago)
brits put vegimite in their coke
― jaxon, Friday, 1 August 2008 00:32 (seventeen years ago)
don't you mean marmite?
― dan selzer, Friday, 1 August 2008 01:56 (seventeen years ago)
amirite?
― vaqueros, Friday, 1 August 2008 09:46 (seventeen years ago)
caffeinated soft drink with vegetable extracts
We just have stricter labelling requirements!
Nice to meet you, and enjoyed the night loads.
You played the Human League and hoped people danced, just like you said you would!
― Jamie T Smith, Friday, 1 August 2008 10:01 (seventeen years ago)
what are vegetable extracts though!!! It almost sounds healthy...if it was a good thing wouldn't they say that on the american packaging? I suppose it'd scare people away.
One thing I did discover is the one thing they do serve on the ice over there, and is perfect for a hot UK day...
MAGNARS!
I've had like 3 since I've come back.
Anyway, glad to meet you as well, thanks for coming out.

Dazzle Ships tonight. Low-key affair. Ridiculous flyer. Same records I played at the ISSUE Project Room benefit at Santos last night because I was too lazy to take them out of the car.

dan, i'm trying to find the thread where you had a picture of that awesome calendar you have and the details about who makes it. I am probably too late to buy one for 2009, huh?

Dan,
Will there be copies of the Bumrocks LP at the Bumrocks Dazzle thingy or do I have to hunt it down somewhere else?
― dmr, Wednesday, 3 December 2008 17:53 (seventeen years ago)
you have to hurry up with the Stendig calendars because they always sell out.
Apparently we're still on the fence about whether the next Dazzle Ships, wed Dec 17th, will be the Bumrocks release party. And if so, we probably won't have copies to sell, word is there aren't many copies around. If bumrocks can't make it, it will be a holiday party and we'll play nothing but the Winston Tong christmas tree rap from the Crepuscule xmas comp and Christmas Wrapping by the Waitresses over and over again.
For those interested, posted a recap of the Part Time Punks festival here:http://acuterecords.com/blog/?p=52
